Historic Sea Captain's Home best location downtown

Heathcote is an 1870 Italianate home built by Captain George Crawford . This home is ideally located in the quiet residential neighborhood called 'the hill' , but is steps from the main street of Saugatuck.

The view from the beautiful backyard overlooks the park, tennis court , and basketball court below, and looks across the Kalamazoo River to Mt. Baldhead .

Known as the house with the porch , Heathcote has a beautiful front porch complete with table and chairs off the kitchen for your morning coffee, and an incredible screened in porch for cocktails, eating, reading , or just relaxing .

Heathcote has two bedrooms upstairs, one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds. These bedrooms share a full , modern bath with original claw foot tub and walk in shower.

Off the kitchen is an additional bedroom know as the bunky , with a queen bed and detached bath with shower. This section of the house is cottage quirky ( but most guests love it ) . This bedroom is not for small children because it is far from the master .

The living room, dining room and kitchen are modern.



Heathcote's porches and yard are great for summer enjoyment. There is even a separate beer fridge ! Great location for kids with the tennis court , basketball court , and park steps away.

Our family have been staying at Heathcote for many years. It fits our family perfectly! Closer to town for the teenagers (and adults). Plenty of living space and our dogs are welcomed.

Just a fantastic home to stay in. The owners have kept the beauty and feel of the original house while upgrading all of the amenities. The kitchen and master bathroom rival the quality of a Hilton. Wonderful fenced back yard for the dog to play in. The convenience to the town is outstanding. You are at the top of the ridge looking down to the river. Really nice views. Just a great place to relax and relieve the stresses of life.

Wonderful house and location. Two comments: the mattress are not comfortable and the airflow on the 2nd floor is minimal. It would help if the windows would open.

Best time of year. The home sits at the top of town. Just a short walk and you are in the center of everything. Beautiful backyard sunsets. Great WiFi. Old world feel but the upgrades were put into the kitchen, master bathroom and HVAC. Best of both worlds. Great TV with full streaming for a relaxing late night movie. Already booked for next year.

This property has everything we need, huge fully stocked kitchen, fenced yard for our dogs (have to ask for this), wide screen TV with streaming, great air conditioning, crazy fast internet connection, big kitchen table, two great porches, one open, one fully screened and a fantastic modern bathroom, shower and tub lots of room. None of these you would expect in a 200 year old home. I almost don't want to praise this as I might not be able to rent next year if everyone rents, ha! You'll love the place for sure. Did I mention it is one block from town with great views.

Location, Location, Location

We enjoyed a wonderful week in Saugatuck at this outstanding property. Everything was exactly as described, And it is totally worthy of its perfect rating. This amazing property sits in a quiet street where you can relax a beautiful front porch or read in the quiet screened in porch. The backyard is big enough to play some cornhole (boards and bags provided) or toss around a football play some catch. It’s big enough for the family to cook out and feel quite at home. The kitchen is outstanding! It has everything you need to cook every meal at home if you are so inclined. To the left of the property is a path that leads down to the park and business district. In the park, you will find a pickleball court, a basketball court, and a city park with a wonderful playground for the young ones. You can walk further towards the river and enjoy restaurants, shops, art galleries, and an abundance of ice cream shops! So many things to do. We took the chain ferry (yes it’s a ferry boat pulled across the river with a chain – it is so unique) over to Douglas and climbed Mount Baldy and then walked down to Oval Beach. As the title of my post indicates, it’s all about location. We walked everywhere and everywhere was never too far or too difficult. We highly recommend this property.

A great week with family

Great week with family members. Great location in walking distance to downtown. Super convenient for the concert in the park., shopping and restaurants. We had a lovely time on the porches. The Douglas beach, and Oval beaches were spectacular. The kitchen is great. The Bunky is a bit funky, musty smelling but with the air conditioner it was okay ( not great). Kitchen was well appointed and grill was in great shape.

Heavenly stay

This is an exceptional property for a small group. If you love the feel of an 1800 old house the owners did a wonderful job at restoration and at the same time added in the right modern touches. The internet is screaming fast, the kitchen is very modern and stocked with everything you need for a good stay. They supplied ample toilet paper and paper towels, The master bathroom was first class with a great shower, tub and well lighted sink. The plumbing was exceptional. Good hot water, toilets flush like crazy and the water pressure was great. Even the tap water tasted like it was filtered. The front and back doors have screens and the side door leads out to the screened porch. We left the doors open and got wonderful cross breezes. But if it is hot the whole house air conditioner is strong and cools down the house quickly. Back yard is huge and mostly fenced. There is a separate TV room with a large flat panel TV, cable and a working DVD player. Ports are available if you brought you own Roku device. The only small negative was the master bed is very soft and springy. Just like the old days! But all other beds are rather stiff so you have choices. We have been coming to Saugatuck for 20 years and this is our first time here and it is by far the best experience yet. The owners have taken real care in appointing this space. On top of that you are one block from downtown but feel like you are well out of the crazy downtown scene. You are going to love this house so book early but not when we want it again. Have fun in Saugatuck!

Great location. loved the front porch sat on it most of the week could6find the beach. Chairs or clotheslines listed on sheet. Kitchen nice and stocked with most things. a scrubby pad would be handy. The shower off kitchen is wierd and nobody used it but upstairs bathroom was nice. Little hard for an infant however. loud floors and hard to crawl on but good stay

Beautiful historic house

Great location - only one block off of the main business street (Butler), but in a very quiet residential area. The house is almost 150 yrs old, but has a renovated kitchen/dining area and comfortable bedrooms. Our only complaint is that we couldn’t use the bunk room off the kitchen because of numerous dead or dying hornets.

Charming and the best location in Saugatuck!

This was my family's first trip to Saugatuck, and we were traveling with our 2 year old son and dog, so we needed a space that would work for everyone. The house is lovely with lots of character. The open kitchen and large screened porch gave us plenty of space to move around and relax, while keeping an eye on everyone. The location is perfect! Downtown is just a quick walk down along the paved walkway next to the house. Also at the base of the walkway is a playground and park which we took our son to everyday. The Hill neighborhood is lovely for a daily stroll and allows you to avoid the crowds of downtown. A few things to note: the backyard is not fully enclosed, so if you have a pet or child you may not want to let them play in the backyard unattended. Also, the stairs to the second floor are steep (the house was built in the 1880's so this is common). We had a fantastic time and look forward to future stays.

House is in a great spot by a short cut trail to shops/dining. House was spotless inside and pretty much had everything we needed. Screen porch was perfect spot for snacks and reading.

Saugatuck has been a summer home for our family for 6 generations . This is not just a rental but our home.

What makes this property unique

Heathcote has the best location in town , a private setting but right downtown , and it has the best porch you'll find - featured in Lake Magazine ! In 2009 we won the Heritage Preservation award from the Saugatuck Douglas Historical Society .
