Historic Sea Captain's Home best location downtown

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Heathcote is an 1870 Italianate home built by Captain George Crawford . This home is ideally located in the quiet residential neighborhood called 'the hill' , but is steps from the main street of Saugatuck.

The view from the beautiful backyard overlooks the park, tennis court , and basketball court below, and looks across the Kalamazoo River to Mt. Baldhead .

Known as the house with the porch , Heathcote has a beautiful front porch complete with table and chairs off the kitchen for your morning coffee, and an incredible screened in porch for cocktails, eating, reading , or just relaxing .

Heathcote has two bedrooms upstairs, one with a queen bed and one with two twin beds. These bedrooms share a full , remodeled bath complete with original claw foot tub and walk in shower.

Off the kitchen is an additional bedroom know as the bunky , with a queen bed and detached bath with shower. This section of the house is cottage quirky ( but most guests love it ) . This bedroom is not for small children because it is far from the master .

The living room, dining room and kitchen are remodeled , and all the original wood floors redone .

Heathcote's porches and yard are great for summer enjoyment. There is even a separate beer fridge ! Great location for kids with the tennis court , basketball court , and park steps away.

Heathcote has an incredible location; the park and playground, the tennis/pickleball courts, and the basketball court are all within steps of the beautiful big backyard. You can walk to all the shops and restaurants, as well as to the ferry that takes you across to the Oval Beach road. As the 6th generation of my family who helped found Saugatuck, I am proud to be restoring this beautiful historic house, and we hope you will enjoy and respect the history of it as well.

Great stay in an historic home

  • 5 of 5

We had a great long weekend at the historic sea captain's home. The location is perfect--steps away from the heart of downtown Saugatuck. The home has a modern kitchen, but it maintains its cozy, historic charm. The upstairs bed was comfortable, and the upstairs bathroom was large and well equipped. The screened porch was a relaxing place to read in the afternoon. The private backyard was great for hanging out with the dog. We hope to return to this home for another stay!

Beautiful historic home close to everything. Every possible amenity included.

  • 5 of 5

This is such a wonderful place. We immediately felt relaxed and enjoyed every room in this historic family home. Evenings on the porch and mornings in the back yard were great. A short walk to everything Saugutuck has to offer. There were beach chairs and a cooler for our afternoon at Oval Beach and board games to play late into the evening. The owners have truly thought of everything including menus from all the local restaurants. The house was very clean and the beds cozy. This would definitely be our top choice in Saugatuck.

Jewel in the Crown of Saugatuck

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I needed to get away from Chicago for a week vacation before fall set in. We fell in love with this place. The wrap-around front porch with colorful Adirondack-style rocking chairs (great for morning coffee with the birds and squirrels), the screened porch, which doubled as an outdoor living room, the parlor and living area, the tastefully appointed and decorated kitchen, the simple, charming bedrooms, decorated with handmade quilts, the fact that there was a laundry in the basement which we could use after a day at the beach -- all made us happy, content and peaceful. But the beauty and history of this house with the great selection of books about Oxbow Summer School of Art and Saugatuck history, and the wonderful framed photos and maps of Saugatuck, Oxbow and Douglas made the house feel drenched in memory and love. Beautiful paintings of Saugatuck land and beach-scapes are hung throughout the house, along with tapestries of Oxbow and Saugatuck buildings. Adding to the sense of history and place are old weathered signs hung thoughtfully throughout the ground area as well, one sign which states "Oval Beach", in another spot, inscribed above a doorway are the words on a plaque “Bunky’s Room.” The lawn around the building, the grape arbor in the backyard, the stately trees which surround the house, the library, the antique oriental rugs, the sense of family all conspire to bring beauty, charm, memories and love alive. And if all that beauty and charm is not enough, you are minutes walking distance from everything in town. A perfect get away, and a jewel of a place! We plan to return!

Fantastic! Don't hesitate in booking.

  • 5 of 5

Brought my parents from England to show them the delights of Saugatuck. Was a little worried as this was my first VRBO, but it was utterly fantastic. The house was full of history (which my dad was missing at this point in his stay in the US), but all the modern things were there and the house was perfectly kitted out and cool. Great location too...just a few minutes to the town on foot.

Looking forward to my next stay there.

Charming house

Our family of four had a great stay at Heathcote. We enjoyed the screen porch and very much appreciated the close proximity to downtown. The kitchen was large and bright and had many amenities. We appreciated the selection of board games as well!

Ideal place

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at the Heathcote many times, renting it solo, and as part of a social group where I stayed in the "bunky". All rooms are appealing and comfortable, and it's location is central to Saugatuck: you can walk to every store and event. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and accomodating for socializing. The yard, although not mentioned yet, is great for BBQ's and Croguet (bring a set), and there is a ping-pong table if you prefer. It also has great access to activities, such as running, bicycling, and swimming (although further away). I will always come back to the Heathcote.

There is something for everyone in Saugatuck: there are the many incredible art galleries and interior stores of Saugatuck and Douglas, there is the Oval Beach, rated as one of the top ten beaches, and there are the abundant local wineries that can be toured. Check the Saugatuck websites for all that you can do.
