This captivating beach house has it all: whitewater views, nearby accesses to the State Beach, in a peaceful residential neighborhood west of the coast highway. Carlsbad Village is a about a half mile away.
The home has been extensively remodeled throughout with high end finishes and has a charming blend of contemporary and antique furnishings. The gourmet kitchen, which features granite counters and stainless steel appliances, is equipped for serious cooks.
The spacious floor plan features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room AND a family room, a dining room, and breakfast room. Outdoor 'living areas' include an oceanview deck, several patios, and a fenced back yard.
Most of our guests spend their time either relaxing in the house, watching the doplphins frolic in the ocean and the pelicans floating by, or enjoying the very special beach. In addition to the sandy beach suitable for all ages, Terramar has tidepools teeming with sealife and the premier offshore surf break in Carlsbad.
Should you tire of salt air and the sound of breaking waves, Carlsbad offers a world of recreational opportunities, including free weekly summer jazz concerts, water and jet skiing, sportsfishing, golf, tennis and cycling. Legoland, Carlsbad Village, the flower fields and the Company Stores (an outlet mall with high-end stores) are all 5 minutes away. The world-renowned San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, and Sea World are about 1/2 hour away. Del Mar, with its thoroughbred racetrack is 15 minutes south. Day trips to LA and Orange County (Disneyland, etc.) are also possible. However, you may never want to leave the beach house!

About Dana Whitson
Our family (Kent,Dana and Amelia Whitson)lived in this house for over 20 years and we still use it occasionally as our second home. Dana, a retired City Manager, does the bookings and (to Kent's dismay) usually has a remodeling or redecorating project going on while we stay at the beach. Amelia, who grew up in the Terramar Beach House and now works in San Francisco as a scientist with the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Kent is a retired transportation engineer/ planner who enjoys golfing, and is a senior PBA bowler. We are fortunate to have Carlsbad residents Karen and John Witmer, our wonderful friends, to be our onsite managers. Karen does the weekly inspections and coordinates the cleaning. John is incredibly handy and can fix just about anything. It is very much a family operation!
Dana Whitson purchased this House in 1975
Why Dana Whitson chose Terramar
This beach house is a cared-for home, not a cookie cutter rental property. We have remodeled it extensively over the years and it is very comfortable for extended families celebrating vacation time together or special occasions. Moreover, we try to keep the house in the kind of condition we would want for ourselves from a rental property. For example, the dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, washer and dryer have all been replaced within the last couple of years. Last year we tore out all the wall to wall carpet and put in new oak floors upstairs and refinished all of the oak floors downstairs. This year we are renovating the back yard with tropical vegetation. We also repainted inside and out.
What makes this House unique
This is a one-of a kind custom beach house with a combination of ocean views, privacy, and comfortable living spaces that you are unlikely to find in other rental properties. Our blog contains additional pictures and information that will help you to appreciate the special qualities of this beach house. Be sure to call us or email if you have any questions!

Only 3 stars because of location 2 stars for the condition of the house and promised amenities .
A quaint beach house in need of a good scrubbing. There were four garbage receptacles all full but one (and it wasn't completely empty) so we were infested with flies the entire stay .Also was awakened by heavy construction noise 6 days a week.Let's just say that's the beginning of a long list .
Fantastic House for a Large Family
We had a wonderful family vacation at Terramar. The house is large and accommodated our party of five adults and four kids very well. The house is well-designed, so that even with a large group, one can find space for peace and quiet.
The front yard and backyard are beautifully landscaped--absolutely gorgeous. There is space for two vehicles--garage and parking in front of it.
The downstairs contains two eating areas near the kitchen for family dinners, plus there are tables outside in the backyard. The large kitchen is well-supplied for all that one could want to cook a gourmet meal. There are two bathrooms downstairs, two bedrooms (one with a Pack 'n Play in the closet that can be set up for little ones), and an area with a daybed with trundle. The upstairs consists of a second living room area with TV, deck overlooking the ocean, and beautiful bedroom with a large master suite bathroom.
There are plenty of toys, buckets, and boogie boards in the garage. The garage also contains a washer and dryer.
We spent most of our time at the beach but appreciated this beautiful beach home as our retreat.
In terms of beach access, the stairs leading down to a spot near Carlsbad tide-pools were a 5-7 minute walk from the house. We spent most of our beach time, however, at spots near the lifeguard towers (either 30 or 32) that were between 0.5 and 0.75 miles from the house. We had kids ages 22 months to 10 years with us and liked that we could find beach areas that had lifeguards nearby.
The house was great. The beach access was hard to get to unless you drove to the beach.
this house has everything you need, and more for a great vacation in carlsbad
This was a bigger house than my husband and I needed but we had friends come one weekend to celebrate a birthday and all 3 couples were happy with the privacy and separate bathrooms. The ocean view from the upstairs suite is incredible and we spent relaxing mornings drinking coffee and looking for whale spouts. ( we saw quite a few and many Dolphins as well.). Also watched the surfers and construction on what I am sure is a new7 million or more house being built in front of us! Grocery shopping is an easy 2/5 minute drive depending on your preference for Vons or Ralph's. Everything you could need is within a short drive. we also daytripped Oceanside, Encinitas, la Jolla and Coronado as well. Eateries are too numerous to mention and I think part of the fun is finding them yourself anyway! We did particularly enjoy one Saturday morning when we took the short drive to the Oceanside harbour and walked the perimeter and absorbed the boating culture as well as the seal culture!! I don't remember it's name but the popular spot for breakfast there is great. We didn't eat out a lot because we had such a great kitchen to cook in. This kitchen is equipped! Anything you need and an outdoor grill. We particularly enjoyed grilling the fresh Mexican shrimp available at pellys (a seafood market in the Ralphs plaza) Tip Top market can provide anything meat oriented you could ever dream of and everything we got there was top quality. We went to the farmers market on Wednesday and though our visit was in late January and February the produce was still above average. Our most relaxing days were spent with beach chairs on one of the beaches north of the house . Carlsbad has been my favorite beach town for some time now. We are from the upper south/ Midwest and can get to beaches in Florida much easier but they don't have the Cali vibe! Through the years, We have spent a month vacationing in Coronado, spent 2 weeks in la Jolla, a week in Solana, even tried downtown last year. Nothing compares to Carlsbad for ease of services (Costco and trader joes are close) and charm. ( a walk around the village for shopping and lunch). If you walk for exercise you will love this house. A few short steps puts you on Carlsbad Blvd where you can walk safely all the way into town with the ocean as your companion ( and a lot of people and dogs too!). Highly recommend for a family vacation. great house to be together as the dining tables inside and out both seat 8.
Terramar Beach Home
My family of 6 spent a week in this delightfully unique home to welcome the New Year 2017. We had a magical stay that was beyond my expectations! This is a large home that can accommodate an extended family. There are 3 large bedrooms and a library with a day bed making it possible for everyone to have privacy and quiet sleeping quarters. There are 3 full baths allowing everyone the room they need to prepare for the day. We love to cook, and the gourmet kitchen is huge and functional. There are two sitting areas off of the kitchen with tables and chairs for dining. Our favorite parts of the home were the lovely landscaping, private backyard patio, and the upstairs master suite with family room. Every night we watched the sunset over the ocean as we gathered on the second floor balcony. The views were stunning and you could hear the waves all night long. We watched surfers and dolphins while having our morning coffee on the balcony. We also built a fire in the fireplace a couple of nights, playing games and watching the New Year festivities on television.
We all fell in love with this charming home, including our little dog, Winnie. She loved walking down to the dog beach, playing in the surf, and hopping along the tide pool rocks. The people we met in the neighborhood were so kind and friendly. And the location of this home is perfect! We were steps away from the beach and the large walking sidewalk that takes you all the way to Carlsbad while watching the waves roll to shore. Also, the information we received from Dana, the owner, and Kathy the property manager, was so helpful before and throughout our stay. Both women were personable, responsive and clear in their communication with us.
I had a hard time saying goodbye to this beautiful place when our stay had come to an end. We experienced one of those unforgettable moments in time when everything comes together with perfection. My family and I will continue to cherish our time together here and look forward to returning again in the future.
Lovely older home in a wonderfully quiet neighborhood close to the beach, Legoland, & restaurants.
We very much enjoyed staying in this spacious home. The beds were comfy and the sea breeze puts you right to sleep. We enjoyed the private backyard, and barbecued on the big gas grill there. The kitchen is appointed with everything imaginable! With two dining areas, there's room for everyone. The beach is easily accessed from two directions, and the tide pools were filled with living creatures. Thanks for sharing your Carlsbad home with us.
We are 5 minutes from Legoland, the Carlsbad Flower Fields, the Carlsbad Village and the Carlsbad outlet stores. Del Mar is 15 minutes away and San Diego is 45 minutes. We have a supply of sporting equipment, including surfboards, boogie boards, bicycles, tennis rackets, golf clubs, croquet set, etc. available for your use.
