About the property

House, 4 Bedroom, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9)

This captivating beach house has it all: whitewater views, nearby accesses to the State Beach, in a peaceful residential neighborhood west of the coast highway. Carlsbad Village is a about a half mile away.

The home has been extensively remodeled throughout with high end finishes and has a charming blend of contemporary and antique furnishings. The gourmet kitchen, which features granite counters and stainless steel appliances, is equipped for serious cooks.

The spacious floor plan features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a living room AND a family room, a dining room, and breakfast room. Outdoor 'living areas' include an oceanview deck, several patios, and a fenced back yard.

Most of our guests spend their time either relaxing in the house, watching the doplphins frolic in the ocean and the pelicans floating by, or enjoying the very special beach. In addition to the sandy beach suitable for all ages, Terramar has tidepools teeming with sealife and the premier offshore surf break in Carlsbad.

Should you tire of salt air and the sound of breaking waves, Carlsbad offers a world of recreational opportunities, including free weekly summer jazz concerts, water and jet skiing, sportsfishing, golf, tennis and cycling. Legoland, Carlsbad Village, the flower fields and the Company Stores (an outlet mall with high-end stores) are all 5 minutes away. The world-renowned San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, and Sea World are about 1/2 hour away. Del Mar, with its thoroughbred racetrack is 15 minutes south. Day trips to LA and Orange County (Disneyland, etc.) are also possible. However, you may never want to leave the beach house!

About Dana Whitson

Our family (Kent,Dana and Amelia Whitson)lived in this house for over 20 years and we still use it occasionally as our second home. Dana, a retired City Manager, does the bookings and (to Kent's dismay) usually has a remodeling or redecorating project going on while we stay at the beach. Amelia, who grew up in the Terramar Beach House and now works in San Francisco as a scientist with the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Kent is a retired transportation engineer/ planner who enjoys golfing, and is a senior PBA bowler. We are fortunate to have Carlsbad residents Karen and John Witmer, our wonderful friends, to be our onsite managers. Karen does the weekly inspections and coordinates the cleaning. John is incredibly handy and can fix just about anything. It is very much a family operation!

Dana Whitson purchased this house in 1975

Why Dana Whitson chose Carlsbad

This beach house is a cared-for home, not a cookie cutter rental property. We have remodeled it extensively over the years and it is very comfortable for extended families celebrating vacation time together or special occasions.

Moreover, we try to keep the house in the kind of condition we would want for ourselves from a rental property. For example, the dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, washer and dryer have all been replaced within the last couple of years. Last year we tore out all the wall to wall carpet and put in new oak floors upstairs and refinished all of the oak floors downstairs. This year we are renovating the back yard with tropical vegetation. We also repainted inside and out.

What makes this house unique

This is a one-of a kind custom beach house with a combination of ocean views, privacy, and comfortable living spaces that you are unlikely to find in other rental properties.

Our blog contains additional pictures and information that will help you to appreciate the special qualities of this beach house. Be sure to call us or email if you have any questions!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We are beginning our last day at your beach house and want to say we have thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Your home is lovely and very unique. We spent mornings on the side patio after our beach walk, afternoons reading and visiting in the living and family rooms and we found it quite amazing that all of us could be in the kitchen at the same time (cooking is one of our main vacation pastimes and your generously appointed kitchen is terrific for the creation of great meals). The usual after dinner evening routine was for Donna and Sanita to watch the sunset from the upstairs balcony while the rest of us enjoyed a long evening beach walk.

We have had many beach vacations all up and down the southern coast of California going at least once a year for the past 32 years. Your home was absolutely one of the best experiences.

Notes:
This charming beach house is located about 100 feet (one house)from the water's edge. The entire second floor master suite and family room has dramatic views of the breaking waves. Guests are lulled to sleep by the sound of the surf (and occasionally barking seals!). There are nearby accesses to the State beach within walking distance both to the north and the south. Long beach walks, shell gathering and watching the pelicans and dolphins is also a popular pastime.

Fantastic!

We loved this vacation home. Our family, 5 adults and 2 small children, had a birthday party, family reunion and anniversary. The two dining spaces and well-equipped kitchen accommodated all these celebrations easily. The kids loved the outdoor spaces and when adults needed quiet, the upstairs balcony has an incredible view of the ocean. Literally 5 min. to Legoland and an easy walk to the beach made the location just perfect for us. Plenty of beach toys, bicycles, kites....we really had fun. The house was very clean and beds super comfortable. A wonderful experience all around.

this house has everything you need, and more for a great vacation in carlsbad

  • 5 of 5

This was a bigger house than my husband and I needed but we had friends come one weekend to celebrate a birthday and all 3 couples were happy with the privacy and separate bathrooms. The ocean view from the upstairs suite is incredible and we spent relaxing mornings drinking coffee and looking for whale spouts. ( we saw quite a few and many Dolphins as well.). Also watched the surfers and construction on what I am sure is a new7 million or more house being built in front of us! Grocery shopping is an easy 2/5 minute drive depending on your preference for Vons or Ralph's. Everything you could need is within a short drive. we also daytripped Oceanside, Encinitas, la Jolla and Coronado as well. Eateries are too numerous to mention and I think part of the fun is finding them yourself anyway! We did particularly enjoy one Saturday morning when we took the short drive to the Oceanside harbour and walked the perimeter and absorbed the boating culture as well as the seal culture!! I don't remember it's name but the popular spot for breakfast there is great. We didn't eat out a lot because we had such a great kitchen to cook in. This kitchen is equipped! Anything you need and an outdoor grill. We particularly enjoyed grilling the fresh Mexican shrimp available at pellys (a seafood market in the Ralphs plaza) Tip Top market can provide anything meat oriented you could ever dream of and everything we got there was top quality. We went to the farmers market on Wednesday and though our visit was in late January and February the produce was still above average. Our most relaxing days were spent with beach chairs on one of the beaches north of the house . Carlsbad has been my favorite beach town for some time now. We are from the upper south/ Midwest and can get to beaches in Florida much easier but they don't have the Cali vibe! Through the years, We have spent a month vacationing in Coronado, spent 2 weeks in la Jolla, a week in Solana, even tried downtown last year. Nothing compares to Carlsbad for ease of services (Costco and trader joes are close) and charm. ( a walk around the village for shopping and lunch). If you walk for exercise you will love this house. A few short steps puts you on Carlsbad Blvd where you can walk safely all the way into town with the ocean as your companion ( and a lot of people and dogs too!). Highly recommend for a family vacation. great house to be together as the dining tables inside and out both seat 8.

Terramar Beach Home

  • 5 of 5

My family of 6 spent a week in this delightfully unique home to welcome the New Year 2017. We had a magical stay that was beyond my expectations! This is a large home that can accommodate an extended family. There are 3 large bedrooms and a library with a day bed making it possible for everyone to have privacy and quiet sleeping quarters. There are 3 full baths allowing everyone the room they need to prepare for the day. We love to cook, and the gourmet kitchen is huge and functional. There are two sitting areas off of the kitchen with tables and chairs for dining. Our favorite parts of the home were the lovely landscaping, private backyard patio, and the upstairs master suite with family room. Every night we watched the sunset over the ocean as we gathered on the second floor balcony. The views were stunning and you could hear the waves all night long. We watched surfers and dolphins while having our morning coffee on the balcony. We also built a fire in the fireplace a couple of nights, playing games and watching the New Year festivities on television.

We all fell in love with this charming home, including our little dog, Winnie. She loved walking down to the dog beach, playing in the surf, and hopping along the tide pool rocks. The people we met in the neighborhood were so kind and friendly. And the location of this home is perfect! We were steps away from the beach and the large walking sidewalk that takes you all the way to Carlsbad while watching the waves roll to shore. Also, the information we received from Dana, the owner, and Kathy the property manager, was so helpful before and throughout our stay. Both women were personable, responsive and clear in their communication with us.

I had a hard time saying goodbye to this beautiful place when our stay had come to an end. We experienced one of those unforgettable moments in time when everything comes together with perfection. My family and I will continue to cherish our time together here and look forward to returning again in the future.

Lovely older home in a wonderfully quiet neighborhood close to the beach, Legoland, & restaurants.

We very much enjoyed staying in this spacious home. The beds were comfy and the sea breeze puts you right to sleep. We enjoyed the private backyard, and barbecued on the big gas grill there. The kitchen is appointed with everything imaginable! With two dining areas, there's room for everyone. The beach is easily accessed from two directions, and the tide pools were filled with living creatures. Thanks for sharing your Carlsbad home with us.

1st class in every way!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed for a month at the beach house in Carlsbad owned by Dana! What a beautiful home! This house is large enough for a big family or a number of visitors. 3 bathrooms and three large bedrooms plus a day bed and a couch that opens up. The kitchen is modern and up to date with stainless steel appliances and everything that you could possibly need to feed your family. The beach is very close and there are many places to explore north and south of the beach (Laguna, Solana etc). Dana is very responsive to the needs of the tenants , as we had a few minor issues that were promptly taken care of! We visited LA and San Diego as the freeway allows you easy access to these cities, plus the wine country of Temecula and the mountains! You are only limited by your imagination and the time you have to explore! It was truly a wonderful experience! We were sorry we had to leave!

Beach Vacation With Grandma, Children, and Grandchildren

  • 4 of 5

This was a wonderful house for a family beach vacation at a reasonable price. The 3 grandsons loved the large fenced backyard and patio area, the ocean view family room and balcony, and, of course, the beach. We chose to walk to the public beach north of the house about four or five blocks away, then a short but a bit steep path down to the beach. Even the two year old and grandma had no trouble with the walk. This beach is wide and we had calm water during the time we were there.

We all enjoyed having so much to do nearby including LEGOLAND, Wild Animal Park, Botanical Garden, outlet mall, shops and restaurants, something for everybody.

Over the course of two weeks, we had up to 10 people staying in the house. We were one grandmother, six adult children and spouses, and three grandchildren ages 2, 3, and 7.

The house has a really nice, well equipped, large kitchen. Large dining room table plus a breakfast room table that was great for crafts and games. Lots of room with table, grill, and lounge chairs on the outdoor yard/patio which was larger than it appeared in the pictures. The living room and the 2 downstairs bedrooms are also quite large, maybe a bit old fashioned and a little dark, but cosy. The upstairs bedroom is fantastic. It's large with gorgeous view and the sound of waves and a luxury bathroom. For the few days when all of the adult children and grandchildren were at the house at the same time we were a little crowded for sleeping. The children slept in the downstairs bedrooms with their parents and one adult in the den/library which was OK at night but little privacy during the day. Also there were some complaints that the mattresses downstairs were not quite as comfortable as they might be. Having three complete bathrooms is really a bonus with this house. However, we did have some problems with the drains, especially downstairs but the owner and their caretakers responded immediately and have additional repairs planned which should remedy these problems complete.

The owner has been wonderful to work with. They have really anticipated and provided for the needs of adults and children on a beach vacation.
