Understanding owners during COVID-19
Our visit to Boulder was cut short by COVID-19. Richard and Kelly were understanding and helped work out a compromise partial refund of our unused days, for which we were appreciative.
Of the property, as stated before, the suite is the basement floor of the owners' home. There is a separate entrance, and abundant overhead lighting, but limited natural light and some sounds from above, as would be expected in a basement. The kitchen not exactly a discreet space, but rather a collection of cooking appliances (microwave and toaster oven in office area cabinet, hot plate in storage cabinet above breakfast table, coffee maker and toaster on breakfast table) gathered near the utility sink, washer and dryer, and very large basement fridge. I would not recommend trying to cook a meal for a large gathering here, but you can definitely whip together a simple dinner if, for example, social distancing prevents eating out regularly. Otherwise, this property is walking distance to Pearl Street Mall, where restaurants abound, when open. The queen bed has a thick, very soft pillow-top, so stomach sleepers may need to try out the other bed, a fold-out couch. The walk-in shower in the single bathroom is generous and gorgeous. Plus pet-friendly, but without evidence of previous pets, i.e. clean.
It was nice meeting your family. We gave you a refund because it was the right thing to do.
Thanks for the Five Star Review. All the best...
Great place - convenient location!
We had a five-star experience while staying here during our short trip to Boulder. The space was clean, quiet, and comfortable. It’s a really attractive unit, with hardwood floors, exposed brick, multiple sitting areas, and a few windows letting in natural light despite it being a basement suite.
Our hosts made sure we were well stocked with towels, linens, and the like. There’s plenty of closet/drawer space to store your things. We didn’t cook while we were there, but the unit can accommodate that. It included everything short of a stove (we spotted a toaster, microwave, hot plate, coffee maker, and a large fridge). A washer and dryer were on-site, too.
The real advantage of using this place for your trip to Boulder is the location. It’s just a short walk to the Pearl Street Mall and the surrounding downtown attractions. If you’re looking to hike, you can reach some trailheads by car in a few minutes. We barely used our car during our stay.
The unit is pet friendly. Our dogs were able to use the fenced-in yard for bathroom trips and there’s a small park around the corner as well.
Kelly and Richard were polite and friendly when we chatted, and they were hands-off during our stay. All in all, this is a great place to call home during your next trip to Boulder!
Great location to Pearl Street!
Great stay! Wonderful property manager and house! Terrific location!
Absolutely amazing guest. They get the Super Classy award for the way they left our guest suite! I thought our housekeeper Beddie had already been here. It's guests like Ayla that make the entire experience so worthwhile.
Good location but..........
The home is located in a neighborhood that is easy walking distance to shops and restaurants with good parking. Owners were initially friendly and available for questions.
We did not realize the space was in a basement. The light from the windows was poor and the ventilation non-existent. I find it hard to believe the City of Boulder granted occupancy for this basement apartment. When we tried to run the bathroom fan for ventilation the owners told us to turn it off. The noise from upstairs was annoying. Loud footsteps and the couple often fighting punctuated our stay. In Richard's defense, he apologized for the screaming matches and even kindly showed me an apology card he got for his wife. Expect frequent announced and un-announced visits to the space as their freezer, refrigerator, and washer and dryer are in the guest space. Their cat was left in our space for an entire day and we are allergic. The un-announced visits and surveillance of our activities felt uncomfortable and, at times, creepy. We shared the bathroom with ants and other bugs. Supposedly pet friendly but we were charged extra for pet cleaning. We are hosts on our own buildings and have professional management, this operation is definitely Mom-and-Pop style.
100% FALSE - This couple trashed our home and treated it like a garbage can and lost their deposit - FACT. My husband and I have had 1128 guests listing on VRBO (and other channels) and had never charged a dime of anyone's security deposit until now - FACT. I wish I could post the video that we submitted to VRBO. Not only did VRBO rule in our favor, but the guest did not even dispute the claim - FACT. They also left us a nice note thanking us for a great trip saying they would see us again next year - FACT. I wish I could post the video & the note. Case closed.
The smell was so bad we had to hire a professional cleaning crew with ozone fans to clear the smell before our next guests. They left rotting food in the refrigerator and their pitbull dog trashed the carpet. They left garbage/food on the floor, under the bed, and in the closet. EVERYWHERE. Unflushed toilet - VILE.
Luckily, the carpet was not ruined. I'm not sure what was worse. Having another vacation rental host treat your home this way and think its OK- or to have someone make outright FALSE CLAIMS against my family and try to sabotage our listing. Then to say Richard showed her an apology card he gave me? Never happened. Or, we left a cat in the guest suite? (Your pitbull would have killed the cat) Un-announced visits and surveillance of their activities? Arguments? Bugs? Denise. You lost your deposit because you & your husband trashed our home - FACT. You lost the dispute with VRBO - FACT. Luckily everything cleaned up and you did not have to pay for a $4000 carpet that your pitbull dog trashed. EVERYTHING ELSE IS BLATANTLY FALSE.
Let this be a testament that all reviews get posted. (They have to by consumer law) Thanks for the nice note thanking us for a great trip and that you will see us next year. We hope to never see you again. To our future amazing guests. Please read the other 265 reviews for an accurate portrayal of our property. Dr. Kelly & Richard Schuh
The home was perfect for our needs. It was exactly as the photos showed and very comfortable. Location to Pearl Street and campus was a plus!
Matt- It was great having you and hosting your family. Our guests will find a turnkey 100% private guest suite that is part of the home in which we reside. The Whittier neighborhood is one of the best in Boulder. Everything is within walking distance.
Boulder is a world class training center for athletes. The guest suite would be perfect for a visiting athlete. Boulder Community Hospital is right up the Street.

Kelly & Richard Schuh purchased this House in 2006
Why Kelly & Richard Schuh chose Whittier
The home is our primary residence. Richard bought the property in September of 2006 just after the renovation. Every home flipper in town had looked at it until the previous owner pulled the trigger and hired the best craftsmen and trades in town for a top to bottom gut renovation. Richard was in town after an Outward Bound Excursion and discovered the home while riding a bike through the historic district. It came down to -If I don't buy this home - I am going to regret it. So he bought it and moved from Minnesota.
What makes this House unique
Mapleton @ 17th Street. The location cannot be beat. You will be right in the heart of Downtown Boulder and be able to walk to everything. As well, the guest suite is very private and comfortable. The architect designed it to feel like a suite in a Five Star hotel with all the amenities you would expect. Beautiful artwork & furniture. Fine linens & Towels. Washer & dryer. The home is located in a very quiet neighborhood in the historic district 4 doors down for the 'Mork & Mindy' house.
