Ask a questionAbout Melissa Smith
We love Lake Michigan, especially long walks on the beach. We love good food, especially the Everyday People Cafe, Ida Red's, The Southerner, and Crane's Orchard. We love the Saugatuck art scene, especially Button Gallery in Douglas and the Peachbelt Studio in Fennville. We love coffee, especially on the porch at Uncommon Grounds. We love exploring, especially finding new spots to eat like GROW and the taqueria next door.
Why Melissa Smith chose Saugatuck
My grandmother was an art student at the Chicago Institute of the Arts in the 1920s. She vacationed on Lake Michigan back in the day. We love this historic home, with its wood paneling and gorgeous stairwell and its connection to the OxBow School of Art. We love the kitchen and the private backyard for spending time with our two college-aged daughters and their friends.
What makes this House unique
Saugatuck is "one of the world's best beach towns" (US News & World Report). We are within a short drive to Oval Beach and the public beach in nearby Douglas. Or you can take the Blue Star Bike Trail to the Saugatuck Dunes State Park for a fairly easy hike to its beach. Our house is right on the bike path that runs into town and all the way to Oval Beach. Saugatuck has a lively arts scene with dance, music and theater at the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, art shows at Ox Bow Art School, and many art galleries in both Douglas and Saugatuck. Lots of family-friendly activities nearby: grab a hot dog and a root beer float at the famous Root Beer Barrel, climb Mt. Baldhead to Lake Michigan, take the chain ferry across the Kalamazoo River and walk to the beach, rent kayaks or go fishing at Wade's Bayou and enjoy long walks on the beach to collect stones. Enjoy the food scene at local favorites The Southerner, Bowdie's Chophouse, Coast 236, Wally's, Phil's and Ida Red's. Head to the farms in Fennville for fresh produce at roadside stands or stop at Crane's Orchards for pie and cider. Rent a retro boat at Retro Boat Rentals along Water Street and explore Lake Michigan and the Kalamazoo River. Fully immerse yourself in the pleasures of the "Art Coast," visit M. Petter gallery and wine bar, find one of our 20 pottery studios, venture out to Virtue Cider in Fennville, sip wine at Fenn Valley Vineyard, and sample microbrews at The Mitten and the Saugatuck Brewing Company. There's so much to do in the area, and the Rivercroft Cottage offers you an extremely comfortable home in a central location from which to explore the area and enjoy your vacation.
