Guestbook comments from the manager

I have rented homes on Hanalei Bay nearly 20 times including beautiful places like Dolphin House and historic Hale Ola. While I prefer the views from down the beach, this is the best appointed and most helpfully designed of all. We appreciate that the kitchen has everything one needs for cooking. The beach gear is exceptional, and I love the many thoughtful touches, such as soap in the lovely outdoor shower, labels on light switches, and decorated rolls of t.p. We will recommend this home to others, and it would be difficult to return anywhere but Pine tree Villa. Mike H.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful home with us. I echo what Mike's reviews. The house has the quality of a much-loved family place. I deeply appreciate the time I have spent here with my husband, son, and two daughters. Lori R.

A wonderful two weeks

  • 5 of 5

We spent 2 weeks at Pine Tree Villa during mid-March, 2017.

The house is as described. The vaulted timber ceilings are wonderful. The kitchen is very well supplied with high quality utensils. The heavy-but-non-stick cookware was a delight. There is a BBQ and when it was close to running out of propane, a call to Talia got a new gas tank within hours. The TVs had cable, on-demand, netflix, blu-ray, etc.

The best feature of the house is the 2nd floor lanai. Since it faces north towards the beach is that it is always in full shade! There was surfing breaking directly across from the lanai. Most days we had live entertainment watching the surfers dancing back and forth across the waves. We also caught sight of some whales in the distance. (Bring binoculars if you remember, they are great for watching surfers or whales.)

There is a small dirt parking lot between the house and the beach. You don't see it from the lanai as the hedge conceals it without concealing the view of the sand and the surf. It does get surfers on the weekend and the mornings - the hard-core locals like to get in a couple of hours of surfing before work. We never found it noisy or excessively busy.

The beach is very picturesque and even on weekends it was not crowded. A couple of days the surf was too high for it to be safe to go in the water. The rest of the time there were waves but it was not crazy. We would often have to wander up or down the beach, however, to find a place that seemed safe to let our kids in the water (they are 7 and 11 years old). There are currents so you need to be wary and watchful. There were lifeguards along the beach but the stations are pretty far apart... you don't want to have to rely on them.

The house is well stocked with water toys. There are sand toys, beach chairs, boogie boards, soft-top surfboards and a few sets of flippers and snorkel masks (although you can't necessarily count on them having flippers in your size! :)). There are also several large, soft, beach towels.

The house is a 10-15 minute walk from the shopping area in Hanalei along low traffic roads. Hanalei is wonderfully undeveloped. shopping area is mostly for beachware, surf equipment, souvenirs and shave ice. There is a small Big Save grocery store - we found the Foodland in Princeville was a more complete place to grocery shop. Don't miss the farmers' market at the local community center - it is only once a week but it was great.

Our Experience was not as good...

  • 1 of 5

I will say that Talia was very nice and tried to help us make it a nice stay and the view of Hanalei Bay is beautiful but we were pretty disappointed over all. I have never left a bad review on vrbo but for what we paid, I don’t feel it was worth it.

First off, the house is located on a beach entry and has a decent sized parking lot between the back yard and the beach. It does have it noted in the fine print but if you look at any of the pictures you would never have guessed there’s a parking lot right behind it. There were trucks and loud local people coming in and out all day and night, being rude, screaming profanity, playing loud music and smoking cigarettes & pot that kept us awake to where we finally got fed up and had to call the cops twice to make them leave.

Secondly, Ants! Oh my god ants! Ants in the bathrooms, the laundry room, the bedrooms, in my suit cases, which had no food in them at all, and of course in the kitchen! I have stayed in at least a dozen places on three islands now and never have I had ants!

Throughout our trip we actually even asked other people who are staying in vacation homes along the beach here and none of them had ant problems in their houses! For how much we paid we should not have had to deal with this!

Last but not least and this may be my fault for not noticing but there’s No Air Conditioning here?!?! I made the assumption that anywhere in Hawaii would have AC! I mean it’s hot & humid here! This house was muggy and hot all the time to where our foods that were supposed to sit out like breads & fruits were going bad too fast. In order to have any air to keep the house from being too hot & humid we had to open the windows which caused us to have to endure the nuisances outside!

Hopefully others won’t have this experience like us. We finally got tired of the ants and noise in the parking lot there that we paid the airlines to change our return tickets and left early. We came here for a relaxing vacation and it turned out to be the complete opposite.

Owner's Response: Aloha Elizabeth I'm sorry to hear that your overall experience was not good. Thank you again for making us aware of the ant problem. I had someone come to take care of it. The wet weather may have been a factor. Here in the tropics..we try our best to keep food stored in the fridge to avoid pests, such as ants as well. The listing does include the public beach access, and parking lot. Hanalei Bay is a favorite destination of visitors and Kama'aina (locals) alike. When the surf is good you can expect more activity in the public access area. With regards to air-conditioning, most of the rentals here do not have A/C. Many of the resorts and hotels do have A/C. It is my hope that you will return to enjoy beautiful Hanalei in the near future. Mahalo! Talia

Perfect Family Vacation Spot

  • 5 of 5

Pine Tree Villa is a well appointed and perfectly situated house. Our family of five spent a glorious week surfing, swimming, and enjoying the beautiful view. The house has a well-equipped and easy-to-use kitchen. It also comes with a full range of beach gear (including surfboards) and a very private and clean outdoor shower. Talia was a pleasure to work with and she promptly responded to our questions and needs. I would highly recommend Pine Tree Villa and we would definitely go back again.

10 year anniversary trip

  • 5 of 5

We loved the house and location. The views are even better than the pictures. The local town nearby made this location perfect with supermarket, shops, and restaurants. Since there can be sporadic rain showers, being close to the beach was great. We could run out and run into the house as needed. There was a good supply of beach chairs, surfboards, boogie boards, etc. One of the beach umbrella was broken which was a bummer but not a big deal. That could probably be replaced easily. The midweek house cleaning is a real plus. The kitchen has everything you need ...including a rice cooker! I like to cook and my husband used the grill during our stay. The house has detailed instruction book, especially for the TV with different remotes was very useful. Netflix is also available which was great for our kids on rainy days to watch movies. There are some family games (Life, Monopoly, Scrabble, Uno) in the house which we played as well. I am very picky about the places we stay, and Pine Tree Villa lived up to the reviews and the pictures. There isn't a bad view from anywhere on the second floor. The place was very nicely furnished, and the beds were comfortable. We ate lunch on the patio and watched the surfers from the deck. Having the outdoor shower is great to rinse off the sand from the beach. I would note there is no central air conditioning but between the fans, open windows, and the ocean breeze, you can stay comfortable. The parking lot behind the house does not really interfere with the view but can become crowded on the weekends. You can get some public traffic, but it was not bothersome to us. We had been to Kauai before and stayed on the south shore, but after staying in Hanalei Bay, we don't want to go anywhere else. We definitely can't wait to come back.

Paradise Found

  • 5 of 5

We thourouly enjoyed our week long stay at the Pine Tree Villa. The house was absolutely perfect in every way. The location is ideal, right on the beach, walk to the best town in Hawaii. Beautiful beach views to the back and spectacular mountain, waterfall and morning rainbow views to the front of the house. Other than the sounds of rain during the night and birds in the morning, it was peaceful and serene. The house had great airflow, no need for A/C, just cool trades coming through the abundant windows. Tastefully decorated and generously stocked, this villa was perfect for our family of five adults. The closet next to the main entrance is full of beach toys, surf boards, beach chairs, umbrella, snorkel gear, they even thought of providing hats! We all agreed that we could live on that lanai, it's where we ate all our meals and relaxed in the evenings listening to the surf. The property manager Talia was a pleasure to work with...we will be back!!!
