We loved our stay at Blue Moose! The home was very spacious, perfect for three families with kids. The kitchen had everything we needed, BBQ works great, the hot tub was nice and clean, and the back of the property opens up into the forest where the kids had a blast exploring and sledding in the snow!

Great house and location

We loved the beautiful house and it’s location backing up to the Tahoe national forest. The only drawback was the 90/night pet fee that was not mentioned in the original listing. Despite this, we hope to come stay at this house again in the summer.

Beautiful Tahoe Donner Cabin

We really enjoyed our stay at this beautiful Tahoe Donner cabin! First off, it’s a beautiful, spacious and well designed space. We appreciated how well organized and stocked the cabin was. Everything we needed was available to us! Everything was labeled down to every light switch, which was super helpful. Also, instructions for everything were very detailed. We will definitely be coming back to stay at your beautiful cabin! Thank you Ken and Rebecca!

What can I say about this place that its previous stayers haven’t said yet?First and foremost if you have multiple kids 7 this is the place to stay. The kids made the bottom rec room their own hangout giving the adults room to kick back and relax upstairs. We all loved the hot tub, the different types of communal hangout spaces and the giant open back area to explore out in the wilderness. The kitchen was fully stocked which gave us an opportunity to have a family dinner of ten on their massive dining table. The management team running overall communication with us were very responsive through the VRBO chat app and very transparent with the rules making our stay without any hassle or worry at all.We will absolutely stay here again and with any luck to more snow when we return.
Wake up and have your coffee to this view every morning from the middle floor patio.

Accurate photos and descriptions

Place was beautiful, instructions were clear for check in and check out. Overall a pretty good deal for the price. The hosts were very responsive! It was perfect for a longer trip since we were working from home, and there was plenty of table space for everyone to work comfortably. There were only two minor annoyances: 1. We couldn't find the remote for one of the upstairs fans, and we were there during the summer so the place got a little hot. The host did try to help but a missing remote is difficult to troubleshoot over the phone 2. We did have to do a good amount of cleaning at check out which took us about 2 hours to complete (all dishes had to be washed, bed stripped and laundry started, vacuumed, all trash taken out, etc.), so the cleaning & service fee felt high.

Respite from the Bay Area

The owners Ken & Rebecca are delightful to rent from. Ken always responded promptly and was also very thoughtful with suggestions. The property is beautiful and perfect for our families with teens. The media room was such a bonus! The pictures in this listing accurately showcase this beautiful home but we were also pleasantly surprised at all of the nice kitchen amenities available for our use. It is such a joy to cook with quality pots & pans, knives especially when you are not in your own home. Most cabins, put their hand me down pots and pans without any pantry items to use. They lock everything up and you have to go and buy/bring everything. Unlike this home where it had every utensil you could need, drawers stocked with Ziplocs, tupperware, serving dishes, and plenty of plates, glasses for our family. The kitchen had an Instant Pot, Blender, Cuisanart knives, Viking range just to name a few, and came well stocked with a full spice cabinet and coffee cupboard. This made eating together on their large dining room table very enjoyable. The attention to detail in every room was really nice with matching furniture and comfortable beds with quality bedding. The bathrooms were nicely stocked with quality soap and lotion, shampoo, body soap and other bathroom necessities in case you forgot anything. There is a large hot tub on the deck surrounded by tall trees which made relaxing very easy. The Media room had leather loungers and a wet bar, stocked with a mini fridge and microwave for popcorn or for the warm face towels that were available to use. The location was perfect with several walking trails from this property. This is a large three split level home that is perfect for families with teens, plenty of space to hang out together and enjoy spreading out when you wanted to. If you have anyone that can not do stairs this would be something to be aware of. I could go on and on about all the ways the owners made renting this place so delightful, but you will have to just rent this yourself to experience the relaxation this house gave to our family. We can't wait to return to this property in the near future! Thank you Ken & Rebecca!

Incredible home in an incredible location

Ken and Rebecca’s home is both luxurious and incredibly well-equipped. The beds are large and extremely comfortable. The living space is comfortable, with a great open plan design. And the kitchen/grill are top of the line and make cooking a real joy. The house is right up against the national forest and that means there is access to amazing hikes right from the back door. We could not give a stronger recommendation for this property. We loved our stay.

About the host

Hosted by Ken Murray (Blue Moose)

Host profile image
Ken grew up 70 miles from Truckee, in the small town of Quincy. While he has lived and traveled many places, he is a homegrown Californian who loves nature, the outdoors and the mountains he once called home. Good cinematography is a critical component of any movie worth viewing for Ken. Rebecca is one of the many midwesterners who transplanted to California in her early 20's and fell in love with outdoor lifestyle (much to the dismay of her family back in Illinois, but fortunately they enjoy visiting her). Our passion for the outdoors led us to purchase our first home in Tahoe Donner in 2005. Although Rebecca's job (commercial interior design) keeps us in the Bay Area, we love being in the mountains and have spent many a weekend skiing, cycling, fly fishing, hiking and swimming around Tahoe.

Why they chose this property

With several extremely energetic German Shorthaired Pointers (GSPs) in the family, it was important that our home be located on a safe/quiet street that backs up to open space. We looked at many many homes in Tahoe Donner and none were quite right; most were your typical Tahoe Donner "large boxes", many had steep driveways (a nonstarter), and others were located on busy streets. The moment we walked into The Blue Moose for the first time, we knew that this was the one. We were captivated by the gorgeous pass-through fireplace, beautiful high ceilings and rough hewn cedar treatments on the main level. Along with the very private downstairs media room, the incredible location backing up to National Forest land and a Tahoe Donner trail, immediately sealed he deal for us. We absolutely love the location, stunning architecture, and peaceful setting.

What makes this property unique

The Blue Moose checked all of the boxes that we were looking for in a home.
Location - Pathway is super convenient to Alder Creek Road (the less-traveled back entrance to Tahoe Donner) and is just a short drive to both Trout Creek Recreation Center and the Northwoods pool and clubhouse.
Setting - We were very fortunate to find a home that backs up to National Forest Land. With direct access from the back yard to the Alder Creek trail system, ours is a fantastic location for avid mountain bikers and hikers. If you follow the trail down the hill, you will end up at Prosser Reservoir, where we love to kayak.
Architecture and Finishes – When we walked into the home for the first time, we were immediately wowed by the unique interior architecture and finishes. Your eye is immediately drawn to the fireplace that serves both the living room and Pub dining area and the vaulted wooden beam ceilings. The finishes are tasteful mountain style with fir floors and a blend of rough hewn cedar and hand-troweled walls.
Ideal Family Layout – With the living and dining areas are on the main level and the three of the four bedrooms below and the fourth above, families will appreciate the peace and quiet while the kiddos play below. Dual masters, a downstairs media room, and two dining areas are also perfect family amenities.
