About Ray & Jo

Ray is a recently retired Director of an Adult Education program in the western mountains of Maine, an outdoor enthusiast, cyclist and gardener. Joanne is an a critical care RN and stain glass artisan. Together we enjoy the peacefulness of our get-away cottage and the surrounding beauty of it all.

Ray & Jo purchased this cottage in 1992

Why Ray & Jo chose Down East

Working in the area led us to this beautiful unique quaint fishing village. The peacefulness combined with the Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge 1/2 mile walk from our cottage with fields of song birds and blueberries for the picking located on a remote Maine peninsula left us spelled bound with the overwhelming beauty and serenity. The cobble stone private beach and magnificent views including sun and moon rises ,sounds of sea birds and shore sounds lulled us to choose this enchanted remote paradise with the historical cultural elements still intact and thriving today.

We are proud and pleased to share this uniquely designed cottage, the local cultural experience that surrounds it, and the natural beauty of this unique, untouched, natural habitat as we experience it ourselves with you and yours.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage itself was thoughtfully conceived incorporating numerous Frank Lloyd Wright principles and design in organic architecture.

Meaning, a design that is in harmony with humanity and it's surrounding environment.

Collaborating with designer, builder Joe LeVigne, owner of his company "Sprezzatura" (noun,Italian: The art of making something difficult look effortless.), he was able to take concepts/ideas and incorporate them into the elegant and harmonious creation of our cottage, "Downeast Retreat". Truly a retreat feeling in it's own right. Through mindful design of space, local spruce and pine wood, window placement etc. the natural sound and sight of this extraordinary paradise is invited into every nook and room of our cottage.

The incredible panoramic views of bay from inside the cottage or one of the decks of Petit Manan Island light house and Bois Bubert Island as backdrop of the to an fro of fishing trollers and lobster boats traversing the colorful waterway out to sea lend a magical and romantic feeling all of its own.

The fact that we own a small piece of ocean front property directly across the street with our own private access to the cobble stone beach to sit and have morning coffee or evening cocktails at sunset just made this property that much more irresistible.

Being outdoor enthusiasts, the endless outdoor activities, hiking, biking, kayaking all available right outside the door of the cottage was the icing on the cake for us.

Locally, having access to fresh sea foods caught from right out in the bay, local boat and whale watching tours, fresh water lakes and beeches.

We adore the many quaint and small scenic fishing villages and abounding bold coast hikes as one sojourns Nor'east up the coast of Maine to Rogues Bluff, Quoddy Head or Campobello Island just one and a half hours away all make for excellent day trips.

Bright, warm, new space in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

The house is warm and bright, characterized by blonde wood throughout the interior, and it's situated in one of the most lovely spots in what is a most beautiful part of the country, the coast of Maine... and the hosts are extremely nice people. Did I mention the heated tile floor? Awesome when the wind and fog roll in!

Amazing tranquility in a wonderfully designed cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three stayed in Ray and Joann's beautiful cottage for 10 days and we wish we had much more time to spend there! We wanted a place that would serve as a base for our daytime biking adventures from Acadia park up to the Canadian border and it filled that bill perfectly. The only problem was that we should have scheduled more time to enjoy their wonderful spot in the woods. Out of every window you get wonderful water or forrest views and there are two decks for outdoor relaxing. The property was clean and the furnishings were tasteful, comfortable and in very good condition. The kitchen is well stocked with all the cooking essentials. As for the hosts, they couldn't be nicer. We definitely look forward to returning next year! Thanks Ray and Joann!

It was wonderful!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved Ray & Jo's idyllic spot! It was perfect-- inside and out.

There is enough to keep you busy on Pigeon Hill with the walking trails, stunning beaches, and wild blueberries. You are also close enough to pop over to Acadia's Schoodic Point or take a picnic dinner to McClellan Park. Be sure to eat at the local Mexican place in Millbridge-- it's delicious.

We'd recommend this gem to anyone!

It's central to many points of interest such as: Schoodic Point, Acadia, Bar Harbor and Quoddy Hill State Park. Great downeast cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the house. It was such an adventure for my girls to explore the area, the rocky beach right across from the house, Pigeon Hill, and Arcadia National Park. I would definitely recommend this house for children. The owners Ray and Jo were absolutely helpful. There was a fresh caught seafood right down the street. The lobster was our favorite!! We would love to visit again!
