Why Ray & Jo chose Steuben
Working in the area led us to this beautiful unique quaint fishing village. The peacefulness combined with the Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge 1/2 mile walk from our cottage with fields of song birds and blueberries for the picking located on a remote Maine peninsula left us spelled bound with the overwhelming beauty and serenity. The cobble stone private beach and magnificent views including sun and moon rises, sounds of sea birds and shore sounds lulled us to choose this enchanted remote paradise with the historical cultural elements still intact and thriving today. We are proud and pleased to share this uniquely designed cottage, the local cultural experience that surrounds it, and the natural beauty of this unique, untouched, natural habitat as we experience it ourselves with you and yours.
What makes this Cottage unique
The cottage itself was thoughtfully conceived incorporating numerous Frank Lloyd Wright principles and design in organic architecture. A design that is in harmony with humanity and it's surrounding environment. Collaborating with designer, builder Joe LeVigne, of "Sprezzatura," the elegant and harmonious creation of our cottage, "Downeast Retreat" was created. Truly a retreat feeling. Through mindful design of space, local spruce and pine wood, window placement with a view in every direction, the natural sound and sight of this extraordinary paradise is invited into every nook and room of our cottage. The incredible panoramic views of the bay of Petit Manan Island light house, Bois Bubert Island or the to and fro of fishing trollers & lobster boats traversing the colorful "gum-drop"- bouys' waterway out to sea lends a magical and romantic feeling all of its own. The fact that we own a small piece of ocean front property directly across the street, with our own private access to the cobble stone beach to sit and have morning coffee, or evening cocktails at sunset, just makes this property that much more irresistible. Being outdoor enthusiasts, the endless outdoor activities, hiking, biking, kayaking all available right outside the door of the cottage was the icing on the cake for us. Having access to fresh sea foods caught fresh from the bay, local boat and whale watching tours, fresh water lakes and beaches is too good to be true. Local farmers market in town Milbridge, only a 10 min. drive. We adore the many quaint and small scenic fishing villages and abounding bold coast hikes as one sojourns Nor'east up the coast to Rogues Bluff, Quoddy Head or Campobello Island just 1 1/2 hours away and makes for a fun, memorable day trip. Canadian border is only 1 1/2 hrs drive.

Charming, architectural gem on the shore in downeast!
A beautifully crafted house on the water just north of Mt. Desert Island. Ray and Jo are welcoming, generous hosts. The location is not in the heart of tourist amenities, but that’s the point. Great hiking nearby and MDI within easy reach when you want all that.
Ray and Joanne the homeowners are wonderful people. They are very accommodating. The property was beautiful. My wife and I and our two children had a magical week by the water.
Beautiful property in an excellent location, a bit off the beaten path if you’re looking for something more quiet. Very comfortable, watch the lobster boats from the front porch. Easy access to miles of hiking in Acadia, numerous state parks, and Petit Manan wildlife refuge just minutes away. We had a great week, and would definitely make a return visit.
A wonderful retreat on the ocean!
My husband, the boys (schnauzers) and I needed a place to relax for a couple of weeks and completely unwind. This has been perfect! Comfortable, beautiful, and close enough to all the stuff we also want to do. Love it.
All the best of Maine
Loved the house. It met every need. Ray and Jo were warm and friendly hosts.l and Ray’s dining recommendations were spot on. The location was as remote as you would want but central to most everything we wanted to do.
A 10 min. walk to Petit Manan Nat'l Wildlife Refuge, island and lighthouse views, trails. In season-unsprayed blueberries-pick all you can eat.
Canadian border 1 1/2 hours drive, passport necessary.
