The accommodation is very basic. The place is dated. There is no dishwasher. The shower is very tiny. But for the cost it’s decent. The main bed is very lumpy. The extra bed is better. The property is very pretty outdoors. And very green and the buildings are very rustic and interesting.
Loved our stay at this little cottage. Had everything we could need, super comfortable sofa bed as well. Really comfy clean little house, very private, no other guests on property. Fruit trees, amazing grounds, wood swing, and other charming features. Love love loved it!
The guest house was exactly as described. Very clean and had everything we needed for a weekend stay. The property is very peaceful and surrounded by beautiful oak trees. We enjoyed having breakfast on the porch and watching the birds and squirrels.
Tom is a wonderful host. We would love to come back and stay again.
We have stayed at this property a number of times. It is so quiet! We saw deer everyday. The grounds are just lovely and Morro Bay is a short drive away. We will come again.
The cottage was clean and had everything we needed. While not super fancy, it doesn’t have to be. It sits on a hilltop with beautiful views. Oak trees surround you as you sip coffee in the morning and watch the sunset on the porch in the evening. Cute little fountain in the front. We loved it!
Do not be satisfied with the stories that come before you. Unfold your own myth and fall ardently for this enchanting inn that poetically speaks to your heart and soul simply to remind you that magic still exists in this world. Once you have stayed, you will never look at the world in the same way, having been reminded that the whole universe is actually in love with you! The care and beauty of this place wraps you in comfort, peace and belonging. It's as if you fell down a rabbit hole in time and discovered fairytales do exist when you allow yourself to become the story. Abandon your phone and linger in the grass, eyes skyward in awe under 300 year oak trees. Walk through the coveted garden and taste the "sweetest" of apricots or blackberries (or whatever else is growing). Nestle on the porch in the evening and be caressed by the late afternoon ocean breeze. There's really no need to rest, it's truly a dream of dreams. I did not want to leave any review as I don't want the place to be found at all, but I owe Mr. O'Malley the truth and elegance of his efforts and work. He is simply the kindest of souls on top of this remarkable inn. Please don't book in September (I will be back for my birthday!!!).
For my wife and I and our dog this is the perfect Central Coast accomadation. Has everything needed and is private. Tom is a great host. This is our first visit this year, but will return each warm weather month. Stayed five times last year.
We had a great stay at Portola Inn last weekend. Tom is an excellent host and he is very helpful and responsive. The location is so beautiful and serene with the views of the mountains and the garden. I was traveling with my dad and it was the perfect place to relax and recharge. Thanks Tom.
Very attentive property manager who responded to all our requests immediately. The cottage was so cozy and the premises is beautiful. I would definitely stay here again.
The grounds are stunning with the majestic oaks and rolling hills in the distance! Shared wine between friends and family at sunset in that setting on the cottage deck was just delightful! The cottage was accessible for my elderly father with his walker. The kitchen was stocked with all the basic things you need on a holiday. Our stay was made even better by Tom and Peggy’s welcoming ways! We are looking forward to staying again on our next trip to A-town!
For my wife and I and our dog the guest house at Portola Inn in the perfect getaway -- quiet, everything one needs, good food options, close to the dog freiendly beach in Cayucos, and a beautiful property.
Second time staying. Set on the front porch drinking coffee watching the hummingbirds and squirrel. Also had a visit from sweet Calico kitty. Very clean, quiet and peaceful.
Fifth visit for my wife and I and our dog to the Guest House at Portola Inn. Convenient to the coast and peaceful setting. Tom, the host, is helpful but not intrusive. We already have another stay booked.
Lovely, private retreat. Good wi-fi for remote work, comfortable bed for sleep, lovely property for walks with the dog. Tom was very responsive to the one request we did make.
The only, very slight, disappointment was that the kitchen was not outfitted very well or stocked with basics. Beautiful stove/oven but a ragtag assortment of pots and pans with a handle that fell off, no mixing bowls, no way to make ice.
As the host of a vacation rental I can be hyper-critical but this beautiful retreat should be above these little flaws!
Tom was a great host and the property was spacious, convenient, and quiet, with the actual guest house very clean and relaxing. The grounds of the property are charming, with an occasional family of deer visiting! Thanks for your hospitality, Tom!

About the host
Hosted by Tom and Peggy O'Malley
Talk about local history with the current owners, Peggy and Tom O'Malley, who were both born in Atascadero. Tom grew up next door in a house built by his father in the 1940's. Tom's first job was working in the 'Colony Orchard' at the historic home right next door. The main house was built for Harry and Minnie Peterson in 1927 by Russell Pysher, the brother-in-law of Minnie Peterson. He was also the head carpenter at the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena for most of his career. Harry was one of the first businessmen in Atascadero and Minnie was a local artist. Some of her work is now on display at this home along with paintings of local scenes painted by Tom's grandmother, mother and other local artists. Ironwork in the living room and dining room was created by Edward Trinkeller, a craftsman who worked on Hearst Castle. Peggy and Tom continue the tradition of using local craftsmen to faithfully restore, maintain and expand their home. For example, local artist Mark Greenaway created the many wayfinding signs in use around the property.
Why they chose this property
We bought this property as our family home in 1995 because of its beautiful location and interesting local and personal history. We love living in Atascadero as well as being close to so many great places to explore: To the north we have; Hearst Castle - 45 min., Cambria/Cayucos - 35 min., Morro Bay - 20 min., Paso Robles - 10 min., Historic Templeton - 5 min. To the south we have; San Luis Obispo/Cal Poly - 20 min., Avila & Pismo Beaches - 30 min., Los Olivos, Buelton,Solvang - 1 hour & 15 min. We are also located about 1/2 hour from several lakes: Nacimiento, San Antonio, Santa Margarita, and Lopez. Because of our interest in California History we are pleased to be close to three of the original California Missions; San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, San Miguel de Archangel, and San Antonio de Padua.
What makes this property unique
Enjoy a peaceful hilltop with abundant wildlife. It is especially relaxing to watch the quail, deer, and squirrels. If you would like to have a family picnic or BBQ ask us about reserving a picnic or BBQ area at no extra cost.
