Anasazi Dreamin' Secluded w/ View
Welcome to Magic Rock. This unique house is set in the middle of 35 acres and is not visible from the road. You are one mile from Main St. Cortez, but feel like you are far from the city. This is the perfect place to do lots of interesting day trips of hiking, biking, fishing, rafting, hunting and exploring canyons for Anasazi ruins. You can see beautiful views of Mesa Verde and the La Platas Mountains while relaxing on the couch in the living room, or sitting out on the deck. The property has lots of historical and prehistorical sites of interest. Please feel free to explore around the property but do not take any pot shards, or other historical artifacts, or dig for them. We would like to keep it as untouched as possible for the next guests. The cold spring on the property was the first source of water for the town of Cortez. There are many Anasazi sites and some rock art on a large rock in the canyon, east of the house. Be careful getting down to see it. The eastern edge of the property runs down the middle of McElmo creek.
Magic Rock is within easy driving of Durango, Delores, Mancos, Mesa Verde, Canyon Lands, Four Corners Monument, Land of the Ancients, Telluride, Shiprock, Moab, the Delores and San Juan rivers, and lots of Anasazi points of interest. You could easily spend a week exploring all the local canyons. The Ute Mountain Casino is 11 miles away.
There is one bedroom with a queen size bed and then the sofa unfolds into a queen size bed. I've slept on the sofa bed and it is very comfortable. :^) The kitchen has stove, fridge, microwave, blender, toaster oven, crock pot, coffee grinder and coffee maker. Plenty of pots and pans for cooking and baking. Many spices are in the cupboard to the left of the stove. Lots of condiments in the refridgerator. If you enjoy drinking your wine out of crystal glasses or eating on fine china, this kitchen has what you need. There is a TV/DVD player that gets local station, also a TV in the bedroom. All the comforts of home!
This location is perfect for a stop over or extended stay.

I live in Alaska, but plan to move to this property when I reitre. I am very into the historical as well as natural wonders of this area. I hope you enjoy your stay at Magic Rock as much as I do.
KIM purchased this House in 2006
Why KIM chose Cortez
I've always been interested in archeology and native american history and culture specifically. My friends mother lives in the area and told me about this great property that was for sale. It has all the characteristics of the Hawkins Preserve(across the canyon) but is privately owed. I bought it site unseen and have not regretted my hasty action.
What makes this House unique
This property and the surrounding area are full of history, from the Anaszi Indians, to the first white settelers in the area. On this 35 acers you will find the original water supply for the town of Mitchell Springs, to the remains of a black smith shop, and Indian ruins. It is close to town approx. 1 mile to Main St. It is close to Sand Canyon which offers hiking, biking, and horse trails among the ruins of the Native Americans, want to go fishing, boating? no problem, not to brag but we are truley situated with in a hour of anything you want to do. Mesa Verde National Park can be seen from the door step of this home and is only 9 miles away,Historic Durango is a 1 hour drive, library, rec. center, parks, tennis courts are all in town here.

My husband and I stayed at Magic Rock for 3 weeks this August/September, 2017.
The house was very clean and had everything we needed for a great home base for touring Mesa Verde, Telluride, Dolores, and many other incredible places.
We enjoyed the privacy of Magic Rock and spent many evenings sitting in the gazebo area watching the stars and gazing at Mesa Verde!
This is a very special little piece of heaven.
I’m so glad you enjoyed your time there, Denise!
For personal medical reasons, our stay did not go as expected, but the owner of this spot and her support people could not have been more supportive and helpful throughout.
Magical stay at Magic Rock
Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful spot. The house is charming and furnished with everything we needed for a perfect stay. We VERY MUCH enjoyed the property and views of the mountain ranges. We loved seeing the wildlife on site, we saw deer everyday. Watching the sunset every evening was one of the best memories I will have of my week at Magic Rock. Because of the location we were able to visit so many ruins and go on many fabulous hikes.
Thank you again for sharing this beautiful place.
I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay. Please come again.
The house is secluded, quiet, cute and clean. The bed slept very well but several things were wrong with the house and my husband had to do maintenance several times, rather than calling the care taker to come out. First the closet door fell off when we arrived and went to put clothes in the closet and one lamp in bedroom did not work (caretaker knew about it and said her son was supposed to have fixed those). then the second lamp went out. First night there, when I plugged in the blow dryer, it threw the breaker and he had to go outside in the dark to find it. Thankfully we brought flashlights with us since we didn't know where anything was. Overhead light with ceiling fan in bedroom would not work until I cleaned the batteries and remote. It was heated with 2 electric space heaters and a pellet burning fireplace (that we did not know how to use). The fireplace door gasket leaked smoke and carbon monoxide out which caused the alarm to go off two days until we stopped using the fireplace and aired the house out with low 20's degree temps outside so we just used the space heaters. The shower was a couple of pipes coming out of the wall (no shower head) with the stall so small you could hardly turn around. The owner was coming down from Alaska two days after we left, so maybe she got these things fixed, but I would check on it.
Once again please accept my sincere apology for the difficulties you experienced. I offered to compensate you for the inconveniences, but you graciously declined.
It is unfortunate that so many issues arose, almost like a perfect storm. All of the things you brought up have been fixed.
We always appreciate guests feedback and attempt to make those changes quickly, so that future guest will have a good experience.
Peaceful and great views
We enjoyed our stay at Magic Rock. The house was cozy and comfortable. We saw deer and jack rabbit in the yard and a fox and kits in the distance. Enjoyed exploring the property. It was a great place for day trips to Mesa Verde, Houvenweep, Canyon de Chelly.
Thanks Phoebe. I'm glad it worked out for you.
Review of two stays at Magic Rock
This is a belated review of my stays in May and August of 2015. I enjoyed both stays very much, and am hoping to return again this year. When looking for rentals I always try to find secluded places where I can quietly relax, and Magic Rock is truly unique in being so very close to Cortez, and yet so very private and peaceful. I love the property, and I’ve walked most of the perimeter of the 35 acres, much enjoying the “pioneer artifacts” that are found here and there. I’m also very much interested in Anasazi culture, and staying at a place where I can walk the land where they lived and pick up and handle the remaining potsherds is “magic” for me!
The house itself is clean and comfortable, and the kitchen is more than adequate for all meal preparation. I love to be able to leave the curtains open, and the isolation of Magic Rock allows me to do this even after dark so I can “enjoy the night sky” from inside! The evening I arrived in fall I was just in time to watch the full moon rise over Mesa Verde. With a glass of wine in the gazebo, it was spectacular! From the top of the rise behind the house there’s also a perfect view of Sleeping Ute Mountain. One thing I would echo from an early reviewer would be to bring bottled water for drinking and cooking. The well water does have a “distinctive” taste that I don’t like. Other than that, everything was perfect!
My primary interest when I’m at Cortez is the Ute Mountain Tribal Park—the visitor center is only 18 miles south of Magic Rock. Tribal park is immediately south of Mesa Verde and is three or four times larger in area than M. V. For anyone who’s seriously interested in Anasazi culture, I highly recommend a tour. You must have a Ute Mountain Ute guide to enter the Park, which means you’re with someone who has intimate knowledge of both Ancestral Puebloan and Ute history of the land and the ruins. The full day tour includes 4 of the Park’s cliff dwellings which have been stabilized, but unlike Mesa Verde, have not been reconstructed, so you see them very much as the early explorers and archaeologists did. There are potsherds, corncobs, and other artifacts lying all around you! It’s like walking thru a museum--where you can actually touch and hold the artifacts! For anyone interested in “even more,” the private all-day tour allows even closer interaction with your guide and the ability to decide how long you want to stay in a particular area.
Thank you, Kim, for a wonderful home away from home!
