Charming, perfect get away

  • 5 of 5

We stayed her three nights and the whole experience was perfect. The house is lat 19th century and its careful renovation has kept its Maine charm while providing a house that is fun and not too fussy for the whole family. If I had to write a novel or get some reading done I would come here. Lots of little nooks to sit and read. Roland is a very responsive and helpful host but not intrusive in the least. Though not on the water, it is a close walk, and Bar Harbor a 10 minute drive and Acadia just a bit farther.

Roomy summer house

  • 3 of 5

Mostly Positives: Plenty of room and nice sleeping arrangements for 7 people. Very clean. Very enjoyable back yard. Reasonable kitchen. Easy check-in/check-out.

Some Negatives: The first night we were there the outside temperature dropped to ~35-40F so we turned on the heat. After being on awhile, the house does obtain a strong heating oil smell (as previously noted by another late season guest). This is not typical in my heating oil experiences and I would think is likely due to a supply leak. There's no denying the fumes. It's not harmful, but it is definitely not pleasant and will give many people a headache after a few hours. We bared through it the first night and didn't need to use the heat for the following two days so it wasn't too, too bad. Not an issue for summer visitors. One other thing to note is that the smoke detector did not have a battery installed and it was not plugged into the available house power.

Owner's Response: I am glad that this guest enjoyed the house overall and it is unfortunate that they did not tell me about these temporary issues which I could have taken care of immediately. The heating system had been run only one other time that season and when I checked it after this review I did note a start up smell which I previously attributed to initial season start up and guest unfamiliarity with the system. It did need a nozzle replaced and adjusting which has been done and the issue is gone. We had many parties of guests through the house last season with same day turnovers so it is not always possible to check what everyone has done. The smoke alarm system is hardwired into the house with battery backup. If the battery goes low or is taken out the alarm begins to beep so someone just disconnected it instead of telling me. This guest asked if they could stay past check out which I granted as a courtesy since we did not have another arrival immediately after. This is a beautiful, comfortable and functional house with all modern conveniences but still unique with an authentic character. I really think this guest probably enjoyed the house more and I know it is of a better standard than a three rating considering that they could have just told me of these temporary issues I could have taken care of. We had a wonderful experience at this property.

  • 5 of 5

Wanted to get a property for our niece's wedding so that family members who don't get time to see each other, could spend some quality time wrapped around the wedding. This comfortable quintessential New England rustic home provided us with all the comfort to make it a great family reunion. Recommend to anyone who wants to get a feel of what living in New England was all about. Had all the amenities needed in the modern age incliding big screen TV and wifi. but the charm of days gone by.

Beautiful place to relax in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this lovely home very much! It's location is perfect for getting up early to watch the sunrise from the top of Cadillac Mountain; it is just minutes from Acadia National Park and downtown Bar Harbor, yet still private. The house itself is beautiful and spacious, with a large dining room and table big enough so our large family could eat together. We especially enjoyed the grill out back and the chairs to sit and chat while cooking. There are many built in shelves, supplied with books and board games for all different ages. The beds were comfortable and there is plenty of room throughout the house should you need blow up mattresses. We slept with the windows open each night and the breeze was perfect. The bathroom is beautifully redone with tiles surrounding the tub and a beautiful view of the back yard while relaxing. The sun room was a great place to drink our morning coffee and watch the many deer that casually passed through the yard each morning. Roland was very responsive and accommodating when we asked about one more family member coming at the last minute due to a change in his schedule. It was great to know the owner was just a phone call away.

We had a wonderful stay and look forward to going back next year!

We truly enjoyed this house.

  • 4 of 5

We are an easy to please family. We don't need luxurious accommodations to enjoy time together. This house is quaint, charming and simple. There were a few hurdles for us in that there isn't a stable path to the house from the drive which made it hazardous for my elderly mother. The heat is oil (something I've never been exposed to before) and it gave me an awful headache. The washing machine jumped all over the kitchen. I'm sure the owner can remedy that problem. Despite these issues I had a wonderful time with my family. The flora and fauna are amazing and it's a short distance from town and Acadia National Park. I recommend it.

Owner's Response: I am glad this guest enjoyed the house. There is a flagstone path to the house and it is not very long but slightly uphill. The washing machine works great but will vibrate if the load is not balanced. The heating system is forced hot air and it is oil fired as is prevalent in this area but the oil source would not have any effect as it is in the burner and the heat is transferred to the air by heat exchange panels and is not directly heating the air and so has nothing to do with the warm air being circulated. This is a comfortable, well-maintained and beautiful house with lots of character and is very functional and in a great neighborhood and location for the island in the national Park. I am glad this guest had a great stay and recommends the house.

The house was filled with mold stench. Didn't stay due to instant headache and watery eyes.

House needs a vapor barrier and mold test.

Owner's Response: This review is not true. This party did not actually stay at the house and I am not sure if they even entered it. This was a last minute reservation and then they called at their arrival time trying to get a refund. The house is clean and recently refurbished and has no odor and there is no mold in the house. One can see from all other reviews which are very positive that guests have found it very pleasant and charming with nothing objectionable in terms of cleanliness or smells. It was a warm, beautiful day when this party was supposed to arrive and all of the windows were open and the fans were on with air circulating through the house so the house being filled with any smell was not even possible. I immediately went over to check the house to see if there was some other source of odor in the area. There was no smell of any kind in the house and certainly no "stench" . The house was clean and fresh smelling of the immediate outdoors which is lush with plants and had only pleasant fragrances. No other guests have noted any unpleasant smells in the house and one can see from all other reviews that guests have found it very clean and pleasant. I am not sure of the motivation of this party and I don't know if they even stepped foot in the house, but they were calling immediately at what was to be their arrival time trying to get a refund (well after the cancellation period). It is unfortunate that they would disparage such a beautiful well maintained and charming house which other guests have liked and enjoyed so much.
