Puako - Well Appointed, Family-Friendly Island-Style Corner Condo

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,000 sq ft
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

Condo, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Hawaiian-Style, Well Appointed Beach Condo. 2nd Floor Corner Unit for refreshing cross breeze and more light. Well equipped and remodeled kitchen with all appliances, great pots and pans, sharp knives and small appliances - everything a cook would desire. Boogie boards, Snorkel Gear, Small Coolers, Beach Chairs, Towels and Umbrellas make a day at nearby Hapuna or Beach 69 easy.

We love Puako!!! We have tried to make it so this condo will enable you to have a great and easy stay here. It was chosen and remodeled with ease in mind, with a flat screen TV, Roku, Netflix and Blu-ray player, great Broadband and WiFi, and beds that are firm but comfortable. We also have a second TV w/Roku box & Netflix in the master suite.

The waters around Puako are great - they are very clean, and three of the islands' largest and nicest white sand beaches (Waikoloa, Hapuna & Mauna Kea) are in adjacent coves within two miles of the condo. For those times in between visits to the beach, the condo has a nice, gated pair of pools. One is small and shallow, ideal for kids under 3. The other is larger but by no means a lap pool.

Puako is a relaxed, beachfront community, and this unit is ideally located to make your life easy and relaxed. We are next door to the quaint and funky Puako General Store - an incredibly convenient place with supplies for everything from breakfast to dinner to cocktail fixings and Hawaiiana. You may want to do a stock-up trip or two into Kona (30 minute away with Costco, Safeway, etc...) or Waimea (western style town, home of the Parker Ranch, about 15-20 minutes away, and with a gigantic western style wooden play structure to make the trip fun) and you can spend the rest of the trip being mellow on the beach.

We have a map of all the best locations for activities ranging from a hand-built sheltered rock tide-pool to explore, to romantic beaches on which to watch a sunset. Toss the cooler in the car, and enjoy a different sunset beach within a 5 minute drive each night. 3 large world class beaches and one that we love are all really near by. Pick the beach that has the combination of sand, surf & snorkeling that suits your fancy on each day. During the winter Hapuna has great body surfing - with regular nice sized waves every day. Wailea Bay has lots of trees right next to the ocean - it is a great beach to enjoy some shade but with your toes in the sand. It is hard to go wrong! There are also lots of smaller beaches directly off of Puako road, accessible through short by-ways marked by "Beach Access" signs. Walks to the beach are typically less than 50 feet. The nearest access is a great one - it is just a block away (and fine to walk), with a sheltered lava-rock pool for the kids, and decent entry for a nice, early morning scuba dive or snorkel.

If you want to go out for meals, both modest and fancy restaurants are within a 10-15 minute drive, ranging from the resorts of Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani and the Hapuna Prince to the nearby town of Kawaihae, home of excellent shave ice and complete with an open-daily Farmer's Market - a great source for papaya, vegetables and sweet cane rice sticks. Sightly to the north is Hawi, a lovely artist community with the best ice cream on the island. We have a list of restaurants we have personally tried, plus a list of other places that have been well recommended.

If you want to stay home, you can sit on the Lanai and enjoy the ocean breeze, and use the well-appointed kitchen to create whatever strikes your fancy.

There is an electric grill on the side lanai to expand your cooking options.

On the technical side, we are a registered Hawaii business, and our business number is W12347509-01. Our on-island caretaker/agent is Tiffany Wainwright 808 430-6190 , though we prefer all initial communications to come through us. She will take great care of you once your on property though! Please note that our rates vary by the number of guests.

We welcome you to Hale Hanu (Turtle House) in our delightful little community here in Puako.

All the best, Kimberley and Alan

About Kimberley Lippman

The owners live in Washington State, and enjoy the wonderful contrast of living in the Pacific Northwest coupled with having access to warmth and waves whenever we get away. We're both in technology - hence the high speed internet. We've got a ten year old who grew up going to Hale Hanu and wants to return as often as she can (as do we...). The grandparents like to come along - and we love having multi-generational families use our condo. We very much enjoy sharing our home with friends and family.

Why Kimberley Lippman chose Puako

We love it here - plain and simple. The people are lovely, the environment is quiet and unpretentious, and with the Puako General Store right next door you are never completely out of luck when cooking a meal and needing a surprise ingredient. The beaches are the best - and having a nearby option with lots of shade is great when you've got little kids. Nothing happens here. We like that a lot.

What makes this condo unique

The quiet, the birds, the wild turkeys, quail and finches that abound, the fresh fruit from the garden, amazing beaches right across the street, tide pooling, turtles and a gentle breeze to keep things cool. Puako is a great location from which to get just about anywhere on the island - either upcountry or around the horn to Hilo. South is easy too.

Hale Honu was remodeled when we bought the unit in 2009/2010. We continue to provide updates as needed since then. The kitchen is great - complete with 2 sets of dishes (plastic for the pool and china for the holidays), Coffeemaker, Coffee Grinder, Toaster, Blender, etc. There is an electric BBQ on the side lanai and a very comfortable seating area on the large lanai off the master and living rooms. Baths have hair dryers and soaps, shampoo/conditioner and body wash. The condo has two Pools (gated, shared Pool for Adults and Toddler Wading Pool, Grounds with grapefruit, citrus and banana (in Season), and we provide a full complement of beach chairs, towels, an umbrella, and coolers. We also have boogie boards, snorkel equipment and some pool toys for the little ones.

Can't wait to come back!

  • 5 of 5

I brought my daughter and 2 grandchildren (aged 2 and 4) for 10 days the end of Jan and early Feb 2018. The location was awesome! The little beach across the street was so much fun! Lots of turtles and black crabs to entertain the kids. The entire time we were in Hawaii the waves were exceptionally high and on 2 occasions the beaches were closed due to high wave activity, so it made it made it difficult to get the kids into the ocean at times, but there was usually a small tide pool for them to play in and always the beautiful sandy beach at Hapuna or Spencer's. Those 2 beaches were so close and also close to the Harbor for lunch or ice cream on the way to or back from the beach! That little Taco place is the BEST!!!

We went to the beach daily and loved it! We went to Waimea to the huge playground one day and they also happened to be having a rodeo that day so we were able to enjoy that as well. We found a great health food store there and a good grocery store and pizza place- Luna!

We made 2 trips to Costco... ugh! The traffic due to construction and the people at Costco... well, it's like Costco everywhere--a necessary line up!

We enjoyed Mauna Lani shops and entertainment and loved Anaeho'omalu Bay beach next to Lava Lava restaurant which is also a must do especially with the kids!

The condo was great! Everything we needed. Helpful people at the condo and next door at the General Store! Susie at the General Store can tell you anything you need to know!

The whole thing was much better than a big, expensive hotel/resort! I would love to come back and stay longer!

Thanks so much to Kimberley and Alan for their speedy and thorough responses to my emails! And thanks for having the condo so well stocked with beach chairs, umbrellas-both for rain and beach! Lots of water toys for the kids and coolers for beach snacks!

Great location right across the road from the beach. Well equipped and confortable

  • 5 of 5

Great location to access close beaches, shopping and restaurants but also quiet and peaceful. Comfortable and well equipped. Beautiful flowers and fruit trees all well maintained on the property. Nice but chilly pool but a great area to enjoy the sun or cool off with a quick dip.

Clean and quiet with a beautiful beach across the street this condo was perfect for a special getaway. All the amenities you need plus some you didn't expect. Fresh fruit laid out to enjoy around the property was a real bonus. I highly recommend this condo.

Very pleased and hope to return

  • 5 of 5

We found the unit to be spacious and clean, with a well-equipped kitchen and convenient location on the second floor (next to the stairs). The unit and entire complex seemed quiet and secure. Our stay was short, but comfortable...we hope to book unit 201 for our next visit to Puako.

Sad to Leave

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 5 nights on Puako Beach in the condo with 3 adults and 2 children (3 & 1). The beach is great, not huge, but gentle enough for kids and has amazing tide pools. Over the course of our time we saw 9 Sea Turtles just relaxing on the beach usually at the second public access point to the left. We also saw fish and crabs including a rather large Puffer Fish trapped in a pool.

The condo was spacious, the Lanai was great for relaxing and for drying our constantly wet bathing suits between the beach and the condo pool. Everything we needed for beach or pool time was here, there was snorkeling gear for both adults and kids as well as boogie boards, chairs, umbrellas, and sand toys. The condo did require being conscientious of airflow and sun to keep cool, however we never found it to be a big issue. It can be very dark, especially late at night, so do please be sure to follow the instructions about carrying a light to get in if you are arriving late. On that note if you arrive late in the evening there is a grocery store at the turn off for Mauna Lani which is open until 11pm if you need supplies.

The grounds were great and the property was fairly vacant while we were there. The pool was great for kids and Property Manager was kind enough to allow them to "help" her in her tasks at the pool. The grounds contained many fruit trees, which only a few were ripe when we were there. Our one regret was that we were about 1 week to early for the mango's to be ripe. We managed to get 1 early mango and it was amazing, as well as many bananas.

The General Store was handy to have, for either a quick sandwich, char su bun, or Ice Cream.

We drove into Kailua twice on our trip, as well as over to Waimea and up to Hawi. The location was central to both things we wanted to do and to a wedding we were attending in Hawi.

If we do find ourselves back on the big island we would love to say here again.

Owner's Response: We are always so happy to hear especially from families, since we are a family too with a wide range of ages to be satisfied. I think our guest hit the highlights beautifully! The note about the Mauna Lani Foodland being open till 11 is valuable...I was there just last evening for that very purpose! Thank you Matthew - you are all welcome any time.

Fantastic Shore Diving & Body Surfing - yet with beaches and pools gentle enough for toddlers! Nearby beach regularly voted #1 on the Big Island. Puako reef is one of the nicest in the islands, and this unit is within 200 yards of a good shore entry for scuba divers, and within 1 mile of one of the best shore dive locations on the Islands. Tank rental/refills, Gear Rental and Boat Dives available in nearby Kawaihae (10 minutes away). Fantastic Body Surfing at Hapuna Beach (mostly during the winter months), but still gentle enough for the little ones. Great Beaches within minutes for all ages. Our daughter loved these beaches from the time she could walk!
