Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-5)

This beautiful, duplex home is located on one of the only private beaches in the Florida Keys. The home is located on the southern tip of Long Key, and has a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. Each side of the home is a two-bedroom, one bath. Both sides are available for rent. Other side can be found at VRBO #620321. It is ideal for two families, and a paradise for adults and children.

The Long Key State Park is a short walk up the beach, where camping, birdwatching, snorkeling, hiking, canoeing, and many other activities are offered. The water in front of the home is shallow, with a channel which enables a boat up to 30 feet in length to reach the dock. The shallow water is great for snorkeling, lounging, and is a paradise for children. Boat rentals are available nearby.

The waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Florida Bay provide some of the best diving and fishing in the world. World-Class fishing guides and dive boats are also available. Many of the local fishing guides will pick you up right in front of the house. The Long Key Viaduct, just a few hundred feet from the house, has proven to be one of the world's best places to catch a Tarpon.

Both sides of the home are fully-equipped with linens, kitchen supplies, patio and beach furniture, a barbecue grill, and a tiki hut provides an escape from the warm Florida sunshine. Come to enjoy some of the many attractions that the area has to offer, or just lay in a hammock under a palm tree. There is something for everyone at this beachfront paradise!

The home is located on the site of Henry Flagler’s Long Key Fishing Camp and it’s where author, Zane Grey vacationed and wrote some of his works in the early 1900s. Long Key Fishing Camp was established on Long Key in Florida in 1908 by Henry M. Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway Company for the use of tourists to enjoy what was described as 'some of the best fishing in the world.' It initially served a housing for some of the employees who were building the Overseas Railroad to Key West.

Long Key Fishing Camp featured a two-story hotel and a number of cottages. The camp was made famous by author Zane Grey, who was a regular resident, and a pioneer of the sport of sail fishing. Grey became the first president of the Long Key Fishing Club in 1917. The list of other early distinguished guests included Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Andrew Mellon, Charles Kettering, and other notables.

The fishing camp was destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, as was the Overseas Railroad. After the latter was destroyed, the Overseas Highway (U.S. 1), was built across Long Key in replacement

About Bill Pesch

Our home sits on the same property as the historic Long key Fishing Camp. See details below.

Why Bill Pesch chose Long Key

Long Key gained national prominence through its championing by author Zane Grey, who was a regular resident. Someone can check this, but I believe that Grey was America's first millionaire writer. Grey was a dentist who turned cowboy and became a prolific writer. During the winter of 1911, Grey vacationed at Long Key while writing his novel 'The Light of the Western Stars.' King fishing was the popular sport fishing in those times and the sailfish was considered a nuisance as it would steal the bait used for kingfish. In fact, the sailfish was dubbed 'boohoo.'

Zane Grey, along with a local fishing guide named Bill Partrea, would spend their days fishing. It is not known why Grey took to boohoo fishing, but he did, and on light tackle. Year after year, Grey, and his brother R. C, returned to Long Key. With the support of other fishermen, sail fishing became the sport of sports for Florida Keys fishing enthusiasts. There is still a creek on Long Key known as Zane Grey Creek.

Among Long Key amenities were a 75-room guest hotel, general store, a post office and 14 cottages. Normally, a fleet of 12 fishing boats and guides were available. The two-story clubhouse and cottages were on the Atlantic side, but the boats were generally docked on the Gulf side.

Guests arrived by boat or train. A tram passed under the track to connect the two sides. The guest list included Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, Andrew Mellon, William Hearst, Charles Kettering, and other notables. Louis P. Schutt was the first manager. When L.P. became the manager of the Casa Marina Hotel in Key West, his son George, took over as manager at Long Key.

The Long Key Fishing Club was officially formed with Zane Grey as the first president from March 1917 to 1920. The stated purpose was, 'To Develop the Best and Finest Traits of Sport, To Restrict the Killing of Fish, To Educate the Inexperienced Angler by Helping Him, And To Promote Good Fellowship

What makes this house unique

Four Weeks in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

I spent 4 weeks in the Keys and this was the perfect location and a great property. The location, about half way down the Keys, made getting anywhere in the Keys an easy day trip. The home was clean, well furnished, and the kitchen had everything I needed for meal preparation. The private beach was relaxing and a good place to enjoy the beautiful sunsets (and the sunrise when I made it up that early). There was plenty of furniture to relax on the beach, on the deck, or under the shade of the tiki hut. The owner was very responsive when issues did arise, emailing me back within a short time. Being able to bring my dog for my retirement vacation was the icing on the cake (and she loved chasing birds, crabs, and iguanas and digging in the white sand).

Paradise Perfect as Key Lime Pie!

  • 5 of 5

Our week was exceptional in EVERY way. The home was immaculate, and equipped with special little extras that bespoke the Keys spirit: the tiki huts provided needed shade, a variety of beach and deck furniture suited every activity from sunning to star-gazing, a boat washdown hose and fish cleaning station kept the boating "mess" where it needed to be, outdoor showers were right where they needed to be for post-aquatic rinsedowns, before tracking the beach and the sea inside! There was plenty of room for our party of 4: comfy king bed for hubby and me; equally comfy twins for the Moms (in their 80s). The living area was right-sized for indoor entertainment; the kitchen extremely well-equipped as were the grills outdoors. Plenty of linens, hot water, a dishwasher, a washer/dryer, tiki torches, helpful neighbors - everything you need for relaxing and living in Keys Style. Our rental boat was secure every evening, and awaited us for daytime fun and exploration. The Moms found the beach walkable and the waters warm enough for a dunk, even in October. And, the dog like communing with the birds, the crabs, the fish, the neighbors. It's a great quiet location at the end of the State Park, right near the bridge, and the historic area is captured nicely in the home's amenities and decor.

Stayed Aug 2011 and had a Wonderful time!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I went for one week with our two friends and we had a beautiful time. This property has one of the best locations in the Keys. Sandy beaches are rare down there and this one has a beautiful private one. One night we even saw sea turtles hatch! If you are looking for a nice relaxing vacation by the ocean I strongly recommend this property. If you are bringing a boat make sure you use the channel during low tide to access the dock.

Even more beautiful than the pics!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a glorious relaxing week in the Flagler unit. The white sand is soft. Water was clear, calm and warm. Tiki huts gave it a tropical feel and respite from hot sun. The beach is shallow so perfect for strolling, shelling or as the listing states, for kids to play. It does get weedy further out so I wouldn't say its swimmable. The unit itself was very clean, updated and comfortable with lots of personality. The updated kitchen was well stocked with plenty of pots, dishes, servingware, glassware and gadgets. The linens on the bed--pure heaven--so silky! Walls were covered with local and sea themed pics--many with the humor representative of the Keys. It is a duplex so there are neighbors but there's a washer/dryer between which created privacy on the deck if we wanted it. The unit is close to the road, and you can hear the traffic. For us, it sometimes sounded like waves crashing and never took away from our enjoyment of the property. We spent several days of our week just hanging out because the place was so beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to others and hope that I have the opportunity to return.
