Wonderfully quiet & hidden with perfect on-water location, just off the beaten path

  • 5 of 5

This house is hard to find, even in the daylight, and that just adds to the value. You're at the end of a short dirt road, in the woods, about 60 stairs above the waterline, with a huge view out the great room of trees and water (through the trees). It's fabulous.

We weren't familiar with Deep Creek Lake when we booked this place and I have to say we just got lucky. The location is ideal - it's on the water but just inside one of the fingers of the lake, just beyond the busy middle of the lake. It's a 2 minute boat ride (or 5 min drive) to Brenda's ice cream. If you go to DCL, you have to go there. First by car so you know where it is, then by boat.

Anyway, about the house: Think early 1980s. The design, the cabinetry, the furniture, the deck. So, don't expect anything new except the first floor carpet which as of this writing is so new it smells just installed. It's very nice. The furniture is oversized. The kitchen is very workable for a family of 5. There's even a counter that seats 5. The dining room table is enormous. The great room is large with two sliding doors to a huge deck that overlooks woods and water. Below are the 60 or so stairs that cascade through a few lower level decks to get to the water. There is a nice dock that can handle boats, sunning, and swimming. We did all three.

The house has 3 levels. Top level is a master BR and a loft area with a pullout. The main level has the kitchen, another BR, a bath, and the great room. There's also a screened in porch that we found a bit dark so we didn't use it. It was much nicer being either on the deck or in the great room. There's a grill on the deck too. The lower floor is a wonderful surprise. There is a classic shuffleboard game (the inside variety) and a massive, full-size billiard table with ample cues for a party of 20. We made good use of both of these in the evenings.

This isn't the most up-to-date house you can rent, but it all works just fine (even the 35 year old dishwasher!), and the rate is fair for the area and certainly fair given the idyllic location. The biggest challenge? Figuring out the array of light switches and fan switches. I don't think we ever got it sorted out. The beds are fair. Bring your own linens and towels.

Go here for a secluded family getaway. You're only 5 minutes from shopping and yet you feel like you're 50 miles away. Also, Nancy, the landlord, is helpful before, during, and after your stay.

Peaceful and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

Great house to relax. Lots of space inside and on the decks. Not a far drive to main road with restaurants and clubs. Friendly neighborhood dog - Snoopy - was a great addition for anyone missing their pet from home!

Great place to stay!

This is such a nice house! We spent more time inside than outside because it was the perfect environment for our friends and us. Four adults and two kids fit in nicely, definitely enough space for everybody. One side of the house was all windows and we had an amazing view on the lake while sipping our coffee or wine. The kids played downstairs with the shuffle board, pretty high relax-factor. Too bad we are moving back to Germany and won't be able to stay there again. This was our nicest vacation home ever!

My brother, sister and I, our spouses and my parents spent the weekend at the lake house to celebrate our parents’ 65th wedding anniversary. We had planned to cook and eat in Friday night, and go out Saturday night and for Sunday brunch, but we ended up eating in for all our meals because the house was so comfortable and relaxing. The early season snowfall added to the cozy atmosphere, and we watched the inches accumulate outside from the comfort of the great room while the gas fireplace warmed us. The house was very clean, and more than roomy enough for eight adults. Having a bedroom/bathroom on the first floor was perfect for my parents, who didn’t have to negotiate any steps. The downstairs game room was a hit with the guys, and Nancy was attentive by e-mail to my questions prior to our arrival, and made herself available by cell phone if we needed her during our stay (we didn’t). All in all, it was a great weekend, and we wouldn’t hesitate to rent the house again.

My family and a friends family stayed at this beautiful home for three nights. We had ten people in total and it was beyond spacious. The home was very clean with a gorgeous view of the lake from the great room which has a beautiful stone gas fireplace, sectional sofa and a flat screen TV. The home has been very well maintained by the owner, extremely clean, everything works and provides plenty of light during the day and at night (lots of lights). The dining table is huge (seats 10) which is rare for a vacation home and the kitchen is spacious and well equipped. It also has a three season screened room adjacent to the kitchen which would be great during the summer should bugs be an issue. There was a nice Weber (not some cheap unusable grill most vacation home have) gas grill for BBQ's on the deck. The upstairs has a nice room with TV and a big bathroom with buil-in shower and Jacuzzi tub. It also has a loft area with pull-out bed. The basement has a gorgeous Brunswick pool table and a shuffle board which our children enjoyed. It also has two additional bedrooms, bathroom, bar, gas fireplace and double sliding glass doors which leads to the lakeside below the main deck leading to the dock down the steps. The upper outdoor deck is beyond big which also leads to the dock below via steps and landscaping lights. The dock could probably accomodate four small boats and was a great spot for finshing as we caught a dozen or so small/medium Walleyes and Rock bass. The parking lot accomodates many cars so that is a plus. Overall plenty of space for twelve people even though we had ten and the location is the best part. Beckman's peninsula is very close to everything as it's in the middle of the lake. Arrowhead market is a five minute drive over the bridge along with Uno's, Honi Honi Bar, gas station and the creamery which serves amazing ice cream (were there three times). Wisp is only 15 minute drive. Nancy the owner is very responsive to e-mails and I did not even have to speak to her one time during our transaction. We hope to be back another day and would stay here in a heart beat.
