Peaceful Paradise

Very confused about the the previous review and wanted to leave our take on this property to help future travelers make a comfortable and satisfied decision. We were especially concerned because every review prior to the last one was great with none of the complaints or problems that were stated. We were so happy that we took the chance! The listing description was accurate in our point of view. We were able to get WIFI for the certain times we needed, the owner was happy to help reset the connection if we had any trouble. It is understandable that the weather and location would effect the network at times and to us that sounded reasonable to no fault of theirs. They were very prompt in response to all of our questions or requests. We weren't there to spend all our time on our computer and phones, but cruised the island and beaches from sunrise to sundown. Our expectations were not over the top and we were happy with the simple and clean Studio unit that we walked into. The bed was a wooden futon sofa bed. Nothing more, nothing less. It had a normal sofa bed mattress (usually thin and bendable as expected) and therefore no disappointment or surprise to us. The cleanliness of the unit was great, in fact we were pleasantly relieved to find it cleaner than other places we've stayed at in the past! No sign of black mold (what??) and we had adequate space for clothes items (albeit no closet but that was okay with us) with enough drawers and shelves. The unit is designed and sort of reminded us of "tiny living" which we find delightful (from watching the TV show) and can be pretty cool and adventurous, lol. We travel minimally so storage was not an issue for us either. The best part of this property is the location. The beach is so close, the people are friendly and shops with eateries are just walking distance and conveniently located. We would recommend this unit to anyone looking for a clean and affordable, simple and sweet place to stay near a beautiful sandy swimming beach. We miss our daily sunrise walks along that beautiful oceanside and we cannot wait to return! We are glad and grateful that we made the right call.

Not worth the price

  • 2 of 5

The good:

The unit sits only a short walk from a local beach offering snorkeling and body boarding away from the crowds. There is a shopping center only five minutes from the property, and a bus stop if you don’t have a rental car. The owners rent snorkels and body boards from the unit itself, which was both convenient and far cheaper than anywhere else on North Shore. We only met Ke’Alli, but he was friendly, helpful and thoughtful enough to bring us an emergency lantern during a storm.

The bad:

Several parts of the ad are downright false or misleading. The unit does not have WiFi, the owner’s home next door has low-speed Wifi that barely reaches into the unit. As we had no cell service in the area, we would often spend upwards of thirty minutes trying to load a simple Google search just to check the weather and felt very misled. The owners tried to dismiss these concerns saying that this was just “country living” and that the WiFi would go down when a helicopter passed overhead. While technically the unit was a studio as advertised, it felt instead as if we had just rented a room in the owner’s home and that the only amenities were whatever they had on hand.

The owners didn’t seem to put an effort into making the unit overly liveable. Amenities such as trash bags, toilet paper, and soap were either missing or were only adequately stocked for 3-4 days. The shower was absolutely covered in black mold when we arrived and no attempt had been made to clean it. The ice-maker didn’t work, the TV buttons were broken and covered in tape, and the unit didn’t contain a single coat rack or hanger. We ended up living out of a suitcase the entire time. The futon is horrible and easily the worst part of the stay. If you’re taller than 5’6’’ then you’ll be sleeping in a ball, and it’s only a thin pad over a creaky wooden couch. We could barely sleep five hours a night and were exhausted by the end of the trip.

The owners excused most problems by claiming that we were out in the country, but we were only five minutes from Laie, and I’ve stayed in multiple other properties in the area that did not suffer from these issues. The neighborhood was run down and lacked even a street sign, and the next door neighbor’s yard contained half a rusted car and a pile of 8+ trash bags the entire time.

There are certainly things that could be done to improve the unit, or at least accurately reflect it in the ad, but given the cost we were incredibly disappointed.

quiet in the country

enjoyed our 2nd week in Oahu here(1st week was Waikiki)on our first visit to Hawaii. Was a nice change of pace and unit was centrally located to anything we wanted to do. Although market is close by and Polynesian Culture center 2 minutes away( driving) would recommend a car. The Bus stop is at the end of the lane if you didn't rent a car. Hosts were easy to talk and answered any questions we had Check in/out was easy. Beach is very close and not busy at all .My wife and I enjoyed walking the beach every morning and often had it to ourselves. On the busy day we seen 8 other people :) and yes did have a visit from a seal the one morning on our beach walk.. . Unit is small but has everything you need.My wife and I are small 5'6 and 5'4 and I could touch top and bottom on the futon that was our bed at night. Would have preferred a real bed ( knew there wasn't one going in though but did find we did not sleep comfortably on the futon). Shrimp trucks are close buy as well as a couple other beaches as the location really is quite central for anything you may want to do towards the north shore. Hosts mentioned Pappa Ole's which is in the same strip mall as the market and drug store ( 5 minute walk).. you should have at least 1 meal at this local place as people are friendly not just the staff customers too and food was fantastic (and reasonable). We did not make much use of the kitchen ( fridge excepted)

Unit is spotless clean which is important to us and appreciated. As long as you are okay with the futon I would recommend staying here again.

appreciated our time here

LOVED the stay!

  • 5 of 5

The room was perfect. The owners were extremely friendly. Upon arrival to the island, made sure we got there safely and knew the way to the place. They checked on us regularly, to make sure everything was good. Even suggested places to visit and eat.

This was our first time using VRBO and I really hope ALL experiences are like this. Thank you.

Small but clean studio just steps away from a beautiful, almost private beach. Friendly owners and locals. Have already stayed here twice and plan on returning soon.
