A century later, in 2008–2009, it was lovingly transformed into a welcoming country retreat, with a thoughtful refresh in 2022. While preserving the barn’s rustic character, we infused the interior with mid-century modern design and original pieces personally curated to reflect the beauty and simplicity of that era. The result is a space that feels both timeless and inviting — a place where history, style, and comfort come together to welcome families, friends, and travelers seeking peace and room to breathe. ________________________________________ Book your stay and discover the unexpected spaciousness, peaceful setting, and warm welcome that make Barn Swallow truly special.

Beautiful as pictured! Barn Swallow is clearly given lots of attention and care from the hosts, and they were great communicators as well. Cleanliness was top notch. Well appointed.
Everything about this property was top-notch. We were here for a quick medical trip at nearby UM Health West and were blown away by how thoughtful the setup is. The hosts, who have truly thought of every detail, are excellent communicators and very responsive The open and accessible spaces made it easy to move about. They had every accessory, utensil, entertainment, etc that you could possibly need. It’s a quiet, peaceful retreat that makes you feel instantly at ease, yet close to all the conveniences of shopping, dining, etc. Highly recommend for anyone needing a comfortable, stress-free place to stay, especially if you like to travel with your dog.
The property was accurately reflected in the posting. The host was accessible and responsive. The spacious floor plan, well equipped kitchen, easy parking, and comfortable seating made our stay very relaxing. Bonus points for the fenced in yard for the dogs, sunrise view, and decorated in a way that made every room surprising and fun! This property is so accessible to shopping, touring and eateries, yet country living. We'll be back!
Clean clean clean! Space is decorated with many mid century modern pieces of furniture. Close to Grand Rapids, plenty of places nearby for food and recreational activities. Well stocked and comfortable.Host was very responsive. Thanks
I’d give more than 5 stars if I could. This place is amazing. Everything you could possibly need and more, is available here. It is so spacious that our dogs enjoyed running upAnd down the hallway and around the rooms. The decor is so unique and cute! Comfortable bed and shower and the fenced yard is perfect for dog exercise. It was close enough to Grand Rapids for us to easily go there for dinner.
The accommodations were perfect for us and our two dogs. Provided everything needed for us and our pets. Everything about this place is great and would recommend highly.

Loved it-inside & out. Just wish the grounds weren't quite so wet-so we could have walked all the great outdoors! But that
is Michigan weather. Hope to go again.

I loved everything about this property! There was so much attention to detail and such care and thought behind everything that was provided. My personal favorite were the automatic candles that would turn on in the evening! So much extra thought was put into this rental and it’s so appreciated. Hosts were more than accommodating! They were Spectacular! Will definitely be staying there again!

The pictures didn’t do it justice. It was a beautiful space and so roomy. My family loved all of the movies and amenities. I really liked how kid friendly it was. It was so nice to have a crib and high chair for my one year old. Thank you so much for letting us stay here in Barn Swallow. We will DEFINITELY be back!

Hi Dani, We are happy to hear how well you enjoyed your stay! We do what we can to provide for families who travel so that they don't have to pack any extra things. It can take up a lot of space when traveling - we know that from experience. We'd love to have you visit us again!

We stayed here with our 2 teenage sons, my husband's parents and our dog while visiting our oldest son at Grand Valley State University, which is about 30 min away. Communication with host was amazing and prompt. Property was EXTREMELY clean and WELL stocked with more than we could ask for, not only for our comfort but also for cooking and hanging out. Location was amazing very close to outlet mall and restraunts (less than 5 min), but also in the middle of nowhere with true farm feel! So quiet! Sunrises from back were amazing! Fenced yard was gorgeous. Our dog loved the area and didn't want to come in from the back fenced area. She loved chasing the birds and we loved watching her. Would love to come back in summer time! More than enough room! Loved the big table! Thanks for a great stay!

Ad Accuracy/Arrival:
The description and pictures do not do this place justice! I stayed here for 3 days and two nights with my kids when we came up for a ballet event at the Peter Martin We've Theater @ Grand Rapids Ballet. We were bowled over the moment we pulled in the driveway. There's just no way the pictures can really convey the actual size of this space and it is SO PRETTY!!!
Space:
Normally a place of this size would seem sparse and spartan but Valerie and Brendan have just went all the way with making this space into a comfortable and well appointed home.
Amenities:
There is nothing, and I mean nothing missing. Shampoo, conditioner and soap in the shower; stocked towels and toilet paper; laundry detergent and dishwasher soap; full range of cutlery and dishware; every appliance and service accessory you can imagine (keurig, iced tea maker, four slice toaster, pitchers and carafes, tea service etc.) and a large variety of coffee, teas, sweeteners, condiments etc. The bedrooms have extremely comfortable beds and the fold out twin beds are actually comfortable! Between all of the cabinets and amenities, it's like there's a miniature Bed Bath & Beyond store neatly tucked into this house! My kids my hours playing games from the massive selection in the second living room (because who doesn't have two living rooms?) and an equal amount of time devising ways to extend our stay 🤣 the dog crates in the three seasons room were such a convenience!
Exterior:
There is an actual concrete sidewalk style walking path out back in a fully fenced in backyard. The beautiful stainless steel grill on the back porch is no doubt going to be awesome for the summer and the benches convert into picnic tables!
Host/Hostess: Valerie was absolutely one of the kindest and most patient hosts to date!!! She even came down and met our fur babies and we chatted for quite a while; she told us the history of the home and how it came to be, which was so lovely! She messaged me back within 5 minutes each time I reached out to her. Valerie and Brendan are amazing!
Overall:
We didn't want to leave! We're already planning on a return trip just to have fun at the house! 10/10 A+

About the host
Hosted by Valerie Drummond - Allen
HI my name is Valerie and husbands name is Todd. We are kind, friendly and inviting people. I have lived in the Byron Center area my whole life but Todd comes from the East side of the state. Building our Barn House was the most exciting and rewarding project and dream I have ever accomplished. There is nothing I don't like about our home, and I am blessed to have been able to save this old barn before it became dilapidated beyond repair and turn it into something so many people can enjoy. I often say this old barn has stabled cows, horses and people, but the people have loved it most! I know I do!!
Why they chose this property
Everything about Barn Swallow Manor is oversized, the total space about 8400 and your space about 3000sqft for the 2 bedroom unit. So, from the living room, to the den/game room, bedrooms, dining area, porch and fenced in back yard, it's all big, which makes it very comfortable and inviting for a large range of guests. Barn Swallow is country living at its best! Quiet and peaceful yet we are centrally located and close to everything!
What makes this property unique
Probably the most unique benefits of Barn Swallow, is the country setting, so close to everything, AND besides space & more space, the added bonus that there aren't any steps coming into the barn house! Which means it's easy and accessible to everyone especially with all those suitcases.
The whole 1st level is handicap accessible and we have the walk-in tub, that you can also use the shower feature.
We have a huge 3 season porch! And a large 4 burner gas grill on the way along with a along with a "smokeless" fire pit. (Both should be installed by the end of March if not sooner.)
The fenced in back yard has a private walking/jogging track which is another feature you don't see everyday!
