'The cutest getaway cottage ever'

That's what Better Homes and Gardens magazine called this little retreat when it was featured a few years back.

We call it the the perfect place for TWO Lovers, TWO Friends, Couples, Sisters, Brothers... Rediscover the bond that brought you close in the first place, connect like you've always wanted to, gain a new perspective with that special person in your life.

Celebrate? Escape? No matter where you are in life, some alone-time away can make all the difference in the world. Intrigued? read on...

TWO is located on a secluded 1 acre wooded property, on the northern end of Harbor Country in the town of Sawyer. The Warren Dunes 1900 acres is right next door, and the beach is about a four block walk. A produce market and butcher shop are on each corner, so fresh provisions are never far away. Oh, and the incredible sunsets... It might just be the best memory of your stay!

TWO is a special little place. It has a soulful feeling. Maybe it's the 100 year old trees surrounding the house, perhaps it's the original pine floors and architectural details that date back to the 1920's. Charm yes, but this is not your typical 'cottage.' The house had a complete architect-designed remodel in 1997 and has been kept true to its principles ever since. Private hot tub, screened porch, it's all here for you to enjoy. The moment you walk through the door, you'll be reminded of what a great little hideaway you have found!

History

Known as 'LePin Cottage' (cottage in the pines) this humble abode was built in the 1920's and was used as a grape pickers' shack for the seasonal harvest. The home had no running water or electricity, and occupants were resolved to use the (still on property) outhouse when nature called. As the area developed and the vineyards moved inland, the house was abandoned and remained an empty shell for many years. In 1995 the house was purchased by an architect and his wife, and they set out to make the 'Cottage in the Pines' their family retreat. The renovation was nothing short of amazing. The house was put up on stilts and a new foundation was installed. The entire roof and joists were removed to make way for the new second floor, and an accompanying shed was located in nearby Indiana and transported to the property. The original windows and pine floors were saved, as was the footprint of the structure. The results were stunning. So much so that the home caught the attention of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, which paid homage to the renovation with a six page feature in the July of 1998 issue. Today the story continues. Each and every weekend, new memories and stories are created, as couples, and friends relax and enjoy this special place.

Area

Your heart will long for Harbor Country once you discover all her beauty. Breathtaking sunsets, pristine beaches, outstanding restaurants, art galleries, and shops. Whatever your passion, you’re sure to find refuge from the day-to-day grind. Each of the towns of Harbor Country feature unique qualities that create a carefree, relaxed lifestyle with a sophistication that cultivates culture and small town charm.

About Eileen

We love to travel; been all over the country. We consider ourselves to have a keen sense of what works. Also we often travel with our dog. While we have been to many places, we always love to come back to this this little cottage. It is a calming sanctuary, and we're sure after a stay here you will feel the same way.

Eileen purchased this cottage in 1997

Why Eileen chose Sawyer

Sawyer is one of those great destinations, that once you find it, you hope not too many others follow suit. The restaurants, shops, beaches, culture and all around vibe are unmatched. This little place in the woods has been described as being a storybook cottage, and we couldn't agree more. It oozes with cuteness and is the ultimate escape from the everyday.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is super clean and updated, not your typical musty cottage. The place is compact and efficient, but does not feel cramped. The property is a gorgeous one-acre secluded, wooded, property that is a very short walk to the Warren Dunes. It is the real deal when it comes to the Michigan cottage experience. The house has an antique wood burning stove that is perfect on those cool and winter evenings. To sum it up, the cottage is romantic, the perfect place for two! A great little hideaway!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for the note. We had a wonderful time, thank you. The house was

great and exactly what we needed. We'd love to come back at some

point.

Take care!

A hidden gem in the woods!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Sawyer, MI property. It was so cozy and comfortable, with a screened porch, hot tub and outdoor swing. Very well equipped with everything you need. Thanks for a great couple of days Eileen and Rich.

Cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. The location is great - close to restaurants and breweries but set back from the street and quiet. This is an older cottage with character. As others mentioned, the stairs to the sleeping loft are a bit challenging but we got used to them soon enough. We brought our two, old geezer dogs and they loved their walks to the beach. The hot tub is great on a chilly night. Thanks Eileen.

Extremely peaceful and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

The fireplace outside and inside was great. Close to all the great restaurants and beaches. The beds upstairs were comfy. A couple minor issues ... the notes about coasters and no exceptions to checkout times were not especially helpful. Also, the housekeeper showing up a half an hour before checkout was irritating and awkward. Perhaps a checkout time of noon would be better.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I must address your two comments which I'm assuming are why you rated the cottage with 4 stars. I'm sorry that you did not find the house-rules-notes helpful. They are there as reminders for our guests who either forgot to print out the rental agreement containing the house rules, or do not use the helpful Hospitality links set up in our VRBO listing. They are also easy to move little tent cards, not something permanent and glaring. And as for the cleaning crew arriving too early... we are not their only property to clean. I did check in with her that morning to let her know that you had both overslept and would be running late, and she said that she had arrived 15 minutes early, not 30. And, she patiently waited in the car for you to depart. A later check out (as you suggest in your review) does not give the cleaners ample time to turn over the property for our next guests (which is why we have the tent card posting No Late Check-outs.). I hope this is helpful feedback and completes a full picture of our property despite this person's issues written in her review.

Great place with lots nearby

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed staying here for our 2nd anniversary. There are lots of great places to eat nearby and little antique stores to check out. The cabin itself is quaint and has everything you'd need. We arrived to a stocked snack bowl and wood ready to be lit in the wood stove. The hot tub was a great addition and we enjoyed the screened in porch as well. The two downsides are that the lights are a bit dim in the main area and it was a little tough to see when playing board games on the table and then we also both got a rash of bumps on our necks which seems to be from the hot tub. By all accounts it seems like an innocuous infection that will clear itself up in a few days, but perhaps the pH levels need rebalancing or something to kill the bacteria?

All told, it was a great and we would definitely stay there again if we are in the area. Lusia's Cafe is a must for breakfast/coffee/pastries, so be sure to check that out while you're there!

Owner's Response: We're so glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay. I'm sorry you and your wife have innocuous neck rashes after your trip. I can assure you that it is NOT from the hot tub. The hot tub was serviced Friday just before your arrival, and again on Sunday at 1PM, during your stay. All pH levels were normal. In all the years we've been renting our cottage, which has always had a hot tub, we've never had a guest complain of neck rash. Per the CDC website: Bacteria or pH imbalance in the water, or prolonged use may cause a rash for some people, but the rash will appear on the parts of the body submerged in the water, likely arms and legs, not where the water's edge meets the skin. Our hot tub is serviced so frequently, due to change over in guest rentals, which is why the pH was not imbalanced.

Cute place. Great screened porch, deck, and fire pit. Close to antiques, wineries, and restaurants. Had a nice time. Only concern was the narrow stairs but we got used to them.
