75 Steps to Private Beach Stairs! Laundry, Cable TV and Internet!--In Union Pier

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

Yes, we really are that close to the beach and we took pictures to prove it. So be sure to check out the last three pictures in our photo album. These pictures, together with our owner's map of Union Pier say it all. (view map, then magnify a few times).

We have DEEDED access to our beach through the Luna Gowdy Beach Association. Our beach is private for the residents of our small subdivision of about 50 homes. The designated beach area is 300 feet of lake frontage, so there is plenty of room. Our beach is seldom crowded.

Another nice feature regarding the beach is that our unit is located on the lake side of Lake Shore Road. You never have to cross that road or any other road to access the beach.

Our cozy condo/cottage (a little under 600 sq. ft.) is one of only nine units, surrounding a spacious courtyard. Our cottage is connected to another cottage. Recently renovated, we kept all of the 1930's charm, but added lots of contemporary comforts.

We loved all of our cottage's wooden, wrap-around casement windows, but we added plenty of skylights as well.

We couldn't part with the original, antique kitchen sink, but we also put in new custom cabinets and brand new appliances.

When it came to the bathroom, we looked for a simple vintage design for replacing the fixtures, but we couldn't resist installing

a Jacuzzi bath tub.

Even though it's cooler by the lake, we thought central air conditioning was a must for when the temperatures pushed too high.

To eliminate those inconvenient trips to the New Buffalo Laundromat, we installed a brand new LG combination washer/dryer (locating it in a bedroom closet, hiding it from view, but

making it very, very handy). Doing laundry now is so much easier. However, we kept our outdoor clothes line up for those who still like to air-dry their wet bathing suits and beach towels.

We wanted much faster WiFi, so we just put in Comcast Internet along with Comcast Cable TV. Now we not only receive numerous TV stations, but HBO and Showtime. We still have our DVD library, but guests can bring their own DVDs for movies and programs that they or their kids enjoy seeing.

We also have a hooked-up gas grill right outside our back door---no propane needed!

Now how convenient is that?

Our cottage includes two parking spaces and a huge backyard for picnicking and ball playing and of course, the use of our spectacular Lake Michigan Beach (personally, we think our private Luna Gowdy Beach is one of the clearest, cleanest and best beaches in Union Pier!).

Besides being so close to Lake Michigan, we are an easy walk to the Whistle Stop Grocery and Deli and the Red Arrow Road House Restaurant (3 to 3 1/2 blocks).

We think our cottage is wonderful, but please keep in mind that our cottage is not a party house. Our cottage is much too small for a wedding or family reunion or any kind of party with lots of people. Also keep in mind that we only have parking for TWO cars.

About Mike and Rosemary Stelzner

I am a general contractor and construction manager in Chicago. My wife and I have been enjoying this area for well over twenty years. We now reside in Riverside, but Union Pier will always be our first love.

Why Mike and Rosemary Stelzner chose Southwest

We searched for a long time before we purchased our cottage.

Proximity to the lake and old world charm were the characteristics that we were looking for and our unit at Whispering Pines fulfilled both requirements.

What makes this cottage unique

Not only do we have a great location, but it has all of the vintage details that only an older cottage could have...the arched entryway into the kitchen, the old hand-sawn hardwood floors, 6 lite casement windows and that wonderful original, antique kitchen sink. Plus we are close to everything that Harbor Country has to offer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"...I wanted to tell you again how lovely your home is and how nicely appointed. We've rented in Union Pier many times, and your home is far-and-away the nicest we've experienced. You've done a wonderful job

restoring it and retaining the charm and we hope to rent you cottage again in the future. There is really something special about Union Pier and I can't wait to get back up to see the sunsets.

We had a wonderful time at this Union Pier cottage. Rosemary was so kind to meet us when we arrived and provided for our every need. The cottage was beautiful, charming and had all the conveniences for a sweet relaxing time. The beach was so pretty and just down the steps from the property. We spent evenings watching the sunsets and days exploring the area. The area was quiet and there were only a few families on the beach each day. A great place to relax and step away from a busy pace. We loved it!

The 'owners thought of everything' in this cozy cottage

  • 5 of 5

Staying at your cottage home was a blessing to me more than I can express. My dear soul sister loved it as well. Her husband enjoyed a visit. Although short he liked it too. You and Mike have a fabulous getaway. We loved the antiques, the light in the home and so so many luxuries we don't have at our homes. The luxurious towels, the comfy beds, the cozy living area - there wasn't anything we needed since y'all thought of everything!! Down to the sea glass at each of our doors, soaps, and beach towels, the abundance of food accessories. We both wanted to know where you bought your flatware because we loved how it felt in our hands and the coffee cups were perfect for a cup of afternoon tea and some of her almond chocolate cookies. Is this too much to say? Can you tell we enjoyed our stay? We most certainly did indeed.

I really enjoyed the shower because the water was hot and powerful. My sister loved the huge garden tub. I told my son that he'd love the shower since he's tall.

This stay exceeded my expectations and I am booking next year very soon!!! This is a gem and feeling blessed to have experienced this special place on the Michigan ocean.

Owner's Response: Dear Suzy, When we were renovating our little cottage we gave a great deal of thought and effort as to how we could make our place a special experience not only for ourselves, but for all our guests. We cannot tell you how satisfying it is for us to read your thoughtful review and be so appreciated. Thank you! We look forward to your next visit and to seeing you again! Rosemary and Mike

Perfect time in Union Pier

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time in this cottage. It had everything you could ever need for a perfect vacation. We have done a lot of VRBO vacations and Mike and Rosemary were by far the best people we have worked with. Communication was easy and Rosemary was very welcoming and even took the time to share some of her favorite places with us. The cottage is very charming and clean. It has easy access to a beautiful beach and is in a very nice neighborhood for taking nice long walks. We certainly look forward to returning.

Beautiful, cozy getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Lovely, spotless cottage on the shores of Lake Michigan. My husband and I escaped there during the off-season (November) and it was perfectly silent except for the wind and waves. The cottage is perfectly appointed, comfortable in every way, super clean, with lots of light from all the skylights and windows. Lovely antiques here and there to remind you of its 1930s history. Jacuzzi tub was a welcome surprise (albeit small for a tall person). Super comfy king bed with room to spread out bags in second bedroom. The owners were precious and met us upon check-in to make sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommend! We will be back!

Owner's Response: We were so pleased to have you as guests! Especially so late in the season. This is actually our favorite time at the cottage when all is quiet and the wind over the lake has a special beauty. We were excited to share it with you and look forward to your return!
