The owner of this home is also the designer and builder of the home. I am a professor of Construction Technology at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, Florida. It took me nine months to design and over two years to build this extra-special home. I personally worked on and was involved in every aspect of the construction, even to the point of custom hand making one-of-a-kind: queen beds, kitchen table, and the pine furniture cabinets in the kitchen.
My favorite things to do: Spend time with my 5 children, fish (we caught 86 keeper size fish last summer on Santeetlah -white bass, walleye, lake trout, large mouth bass), and water ski.
I am a licensed builder in both Florida and North Carolina (NC License No. 62831) and was initially licensed in Michigan. I teach all the building construction courses that lead to an A.S. Degree in Building Construction Technology. Builders, their employees, subcontractors, suppliers, and some county building officials enroll in my courses to earn a college degree. I have worked in the construction industry for over 27 years and on a tremendous range of projects: hospitals, stores, industrial buildings and warehouses, projects for the US Army, US Air Force, US Coast Guard, custom homes, renovations, restaurants, auto industry, churches, and schools.
The Owner purchased this house in 2009
Before building here, we took a family vacation with the goal of finding the best mountain lake to buy property and build. Since we live on the water in Florida we wanted more than 'flat or rolling land with a lake' since we already had that. We wanted to change the lifestyle and environment as much as we could and still be within a day's drive of South Florida. That ruled out many states and left the mountain areas of North Carolina as the best of all worlds. We then literally looked at the NC map and drove to every lake that was big enough to appear on the map and was on the western half of the state (not interested in rolling hills). We narrowed it down to 3 lakes and then considered other factors such as driving distance to stores and how safe or easy the drive would be. The other two lakes had roads that were too scary for my wife and driving age daughters, besides taking 30 min or more just to reach some sort of store. The winner was Santeetlah in almost every category. (What good is a nice lake if it is crowded with boats and cottages) We absolutley love our choice.
The unique features and benefits of this home are almost too long to list so to name a few:
Being a new home, everything is clean, crisp, and fresh.
There is no long walk to the water, the home is right on the water's edge.
Every room except for the bonus room and bathrooms have oversized windows and a view of the water and mountains. (Even the stairs leading to the basement has a window)
The driveway and road is at house level for super easy and safe access. Plus there is plenty of parking area unlike some homes that have you park on the shoulder of the road.
You do not have cottages right next to you as many of the other homes on the lake have.
You have a choice of a covered screened-in porch, open upper and lower decks, covered front porch, or covered rear porch area. So even if it rains there are places to sit outside.
There are no other docks right next to you, you can sunbathe and swim in privacy.
What a wonderful way to spend a week. The house is perfect.Very well designed with quiet private room for the grandparents, lovely bedroom with screened in porch for the newly weds and family rooms for the parents with two children. Everyone had their own space. The kitchen has plenty of everything-pots, pans, dishwasher, sets of dishes. Plenty of water toys for everyone. The lake is beautiful and tranquil. Even over Memorial Day weekend it was peaceful in our cove. A must is to rent the boats from the neighbor Jim. He knows all the history of the area and checks on you for any boat needs. The boys went fishing with him one morning and had a great time. The Owner is extremely helpful and left no questions unanswered. His welcome packet covers everything you could imagine with helpful hints. We hiked in Smokey Mountains every other day and spend time on the lake the others. A must if you are there the first of June is the Synchronized Firefly in Joyce Kilmer Forest a short distance away. Thank you for sharing your home.
The house was beautiful inside and out. There were 7 adults. Each comfortable bedroom had its own unique private bathroom. Plenty of room for all of us. The kitchen was fully stocked with 3 sets of dishes, countertop appliances, pots/pans, utensils etc.
We rented the neighbors boat (which we used for sight seeing, fishing or tubing) for the week. We ventured around the mountains to various areas.
Ingles grocery (5 min. away) store had everything we needed. There is no cable/satellite available (which would be nice for our sports minded men), but there is Internet service.
We had family from Georgia, Tennessee and NC which made this a nice central area for all of us to vaca together. We played many ping pong tournaments but mostly relaxed on the dock or decks just catching up and enjoying each other's company.
I love taking pictures, so I always had a beautiful scenery where ever we went. My favorites pictures are from the lake in the boat with mountains as background and the sunrises. Each morning greeted me as the sun peeks over the mountains and the clouds slowly lifted from the hills, I stood in awe at God's beautiful works of art! It did not matter where we went, beauty was everywhere!
I would recommend this house. Beautiful setting on the lake and Gary was so easy and efficient to work with.
Nice new large home. Interior was very well done! Great home for fishing in a boat on the lake or from their private pier. We rented a pontoon boat from Jim (aka "The Mayor")(Neighbor) & he also helped us catch some nice fish. Kids had fun in the game room. Great selection of DVD movies, which was nice since there is no Wifi & cell phone reception is spotty at best. Owner was very easy to work with. Returned Security Deposit immediately.
Wish we would have known that it is a dry county. So pick-up wine, beer, etc. prior to arrival if so desired.
Nice grocery store within 10 minutes. Not too many restaurant choices. There is a McDonalds, Subway etc. The Mexican restaurant, can't remember the name, but there is only one, is actually very good & so is Lynn's Place - these are about your only two choices. The self-proclaimed #1 restaurant in-town "Carolina Kitchen" is closed & no one is certain if it will re-open. Everyone in town was very nice - great people!
There was five of us & unless we were doing something wrong we really had to spread out the showers or no one had hot water. The property is for sale & we had some really nice bikers ring the doorbell trying to find out information about the property.
Great place for those who like to cook & fish off of a nice deck.
Amazing views! So peaceful! The house and all the ammenities were lovely. We had a fantastic time! Thank you, Gary, for sharing your home with us.
We had an awesome week long stay at this beautiful home! The pictures do not do don't do this home justice. We relaxed by the water, fished, and went kayaking on the lake. The water views are beautiful from every aspect. We will definitely be back again.
I, along with 5 other 60+ youngsters enjoyed a long weekend on Lake Santeetlah in a great house! The house is well designed and nicely outfitted with everything visitors need to enjoy the lake. The owner has done a remarkable job in anticipating and meeting needs. We rented a pontoon boat from a neighbor and enjoyed meandering around the lake for 2 days. Thanks for providing us an excellent house and great information. A friendly wildlife officer recommended Pasqualino's in Bryson City, which was wonderful for dinner on Friday night and I would like to recommend Cafe Rel in Franklin. My husband and I were referred there by an innkeeper in Waynesville a couple of years ago and we drove there for lunch on Saturday. The menu is great and the homemade desserts are fantastic.
We give our own 13-page renter information handout which provides lake , home, and area information. We list places to go along with driving directions, travel time, and comments.
