About the property

Chalet, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

We invite you to join the many guests who have learned about our cabin 'by word of mouth' and have returned year after year-- calling it Buena Vista's best kept secret.

Nestled among the pine and aspen on the side of Mt. Princeton, our property is bordered by a picturesque creek perfect for playing in and listening to as you drift off to sleep.

The homey decor includes many personal touches reflecting our family history. The furnishings, linens, bedding and dishes are tastefully coordinated and meticulously maintained.

Our location, set among the Collegiate Peaks (14,000 ft mountains), overlooks the Arkansas River Valley and offers both a myriad of recreational opportunities and the quiet seclusion of a mountainside retreat.

About Jim

Originally built as a respite from our busy professional lives in Illinois, the cabin has served to bring extended family together from locations across the US. We are delighted to see the third generation of our family loving this part of God's county as much as we do. By renting other nearby cabins we have been able to host family reunions here.

Jim purchased this chalet in 1971

Why Jim chose Buena Vista

We built this home after falling in love with the area following several family vacations. Now entering our fifth decade in the valley, we are pleased to share our extensive knowledge of recreational opportunities with you. A complete scrapbook in the cabin is dedicated to favorite hikes and attractions.

What makes this chalet unique

Quiet, end of the road location with a rushing creek, playground for children and majestic views.

3rd Time and Planning for a 4th

  • 5 of 5

Everything that has been written before is still true. You are up 9000 ft in the wooded mountains with neighbors a comfortable distance away, yet in a cozy cabin with all the amenities of a home. This was our third visit and we feel that we have only scratched all the things we can do. The location is central to 100's of trails, summits, alpine lakes, gold panning, kayaking, rock hounding, star gazing, animal watching, fly fishing...........and Buena Vista. This year we visited Waterdog Lake which is a 1000 ft. climb over a 1.3 mile distance. The trail is well maintained and the lakes are beautiful. Give it a try.

perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect location for easy access to hiking trails, Buena Vista shopping, and still not in the middle of crowds. The owners were super hospitable. The kitchen and linen closets were better stocked than my own. We were very comfortable in this beautiful home. And of course, the scenery from the cabin is unbeatable.

Comfy Mountain Getaway - great location

  • 5 of 5

This chalet was a great fit for our family - (4 adults and 3 kids). The home is very clean and provides comforts of a home away from home. Having 1 full bath downstairs well as a toilet and sink upstairs was not a problem with 7 people. We had all of the amenities and cooking supplies needed for indoor and outdoor cooking. Feels less of rental and more like a true family vacation home. We frequent the Buena Vista/Salida area almost annually and loved the convenient and very quiet location of this home. The location is perfect just steps from great hiking trails in the national forest. A short distance from Mt. Princeton Hot Springs, K's Burgers, Buena Vista and the Arkansas River, white water rafting down Browns Canyon and our favorite adventure this trip...a hike to Brown Creek Falls. We brought camping hammocks and hung them outside to listen to the sounds of the creek when we weren't exploring the creek. The deck was also a popular hangout when we weren't on an adventure. The home owners were lovely to work with from start to finish. We have rented several times through VRBO and couldn't be more pleased with this expereince and hope to return in the future. Thank you for sharing this home with us!

Secluded mountain "hideaway" - yet close to activiites

  • 5 of 5

My family (we have 4 kids) has been to this part of Colorado many times over the past ~20 years, and we love it for its beauty and the variety of things to do (not to mention the escape from TX heat in summer :-). This chalet is a true gem we were fortunate to discover just this year! The peaceful location by the stream with an awesome view of Mt. Princeton is a great escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. You can be as ACTIVE (we hiked, biked, fished, rafted, soaked in the hot springs, grilled steaks, ate in town, walked along the river watching talented kayakers, etc!) or as RELAXED (the cabin itself is very cozy, welcoming, homey and comfortable) as you want to be. The chalet is in a convenient location near enough to town (and trails/hot springs/lakes/etc), but away from any traffic or noise. It was a true delight! The owners are extremely friendly, helpful, and easy to work with. They even checked in (via text) with us during our stay to make sure everything was OK. The kitchen is well-stocked; the beds are very comfortable; there are spare towels to take to the hot springs... They thought of everything! We just had to provide food, family, and fond memories! :-) We were very appreciative of all the books, pamphlets, trail maps, and suggestions for things to do in the area. They have books on birds, trees, trails and other interesting reads (as well as a cabinet of family games and puzzles for those stormy afternoons). I highly recommend this chalet to anyone looking for an awesome retreat in God's glorious creation. We certainly hope to be back!

2nd Visit in 3 years ... still wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Our family is hooked on this cabin. The view of Mt. Princeton, the babbling stream, the evening wind blowing through the pine trees and the clean fresh 9000 foot air. The comfortable front deck with hummingbirds skirting around and the gas bar-b-que sending out smells of dinner. And with so much to see and do within a short distance ..... if you can hike 1500 feet over a 1.5 mile distance then you must visit Windsor Lake.

Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely amazing time in this comfortable and cute mountain chalet. There were 9 in our group and we all slept in comfort. The stream is right there and you always have a great view of Mt. Princeton from the front deck. We loved watching the hummingbirds and the wildlife. This chalet is close to everything! We enjoyed lots of hiking and fishing and it's also close to the hot springs! Buena Vista is a very short drive down the mountain with several places to eat and get ice cream. There's also a City Market to shop for your groceries. The owners have lots of brochures and books on hikes and things to do in the area. White water rafting is also close by if you are interested in that. This is the perfect chalet to rent if you're coming to the mountains. We made lots of great memories in God's beautiful creation! We highly recommend it for your family too!
