About this property

Affordable Vacation Home Near Acadia National Park

This historic home in the center of Bass Harbor village on Mount Desert Island has a front house, Harbor View Cottage, and a back house, Bass Harbor Hideaway (this listing), both of which are available for summer rentals.

Bass Harbor Hideaway is clean, sunlit and comfortable, and is across the street and up the hill from Bass Harbor, a scenic marina filled with lobster boats. The home is quiet and rustic, with somewhat dated decor (see photos), offering a country outpost from which to enjoy all that Mt. Desert Island and Acadia have to offer.

The rental features:
• Two-story gabled duplex, sleeps four upstairs in twin beds, plus two on a pull-out couch.
• Living room, eat-in kitchen (full-sized appliances).
• New kitchen counters, cooktop and sink.
• Two bedrooms on 2nd floor with two twin beds in each (linens and towels included), plus two full baths.
• Small deck with a distant view of Bass Harbor, which is about 300 feet away.
• Washer/dryer and charcoal grill are provided.
• Large front and side yards provide plenty of room for children to play and explore.
• 1 mile from Bass Harbor Head Light.
• 12-minute drive to Acadia National Park.
• 10-minute drive to shops & restaurants of Southwest Harbor.
• Minutes to Echo Lake, hiking trails, swimming, boating, golf, tennis & fishing.
• Free island shuttle to Bar Harbor and other points of interest. Shuttle stops every hour. Visit http://www.exploreacadia.com/route7.htm for the schedule.
• High-speed broadband WIFI at speeds of 300 Mbps downloads / 10 Mbps uploads (typically fast enough to stream). Performance may vary based on the number of devices being used.
• Note: AT&T cell phone service works well in Bass Harbor, but Verizon and T-Mobile offer only spotty service. If you have Verizon or T-Mobile, you may want to make park and other reservations ahead of time.

***A Note on Cleaning: We follow our routine cleaning between tenants with EPA-registered disinfectants to kill germs on commonly used surfaces such as kitchen counters, appliances, doorknobs, cabinet knobs, light switches, faucets, toilet handles and television remote controls.***

The home was superb. My wife and I loved the spaciousness of the kitchen and dining room area. We also truly loved having all the normal things we would use at home (colander, different utensils, alum foil, etc) available. It truly felt like home. My wife especially loved the deck outside the living room for morning coffee or tea with the view of the harbor. As no one else was staying next door she was able to move the deck chairs further down the front lawn for some gorgeous sun and peace. We also loved how dark it was at night with little light pollution to see the stars. The home is close to everything we needed. We truly enjoyed it and would love to come back in the future.

Beautiful, quiet location

It was a very clean and lovely house with plenty of space and a great view! If I were coming back to this area again, I would absolutely stay here again. Very friendly and well-prepared hosts who had a plethora of things you could do on the island written out for you

Perfect Place Perfect Area

It was comfortable and the area was just perfect! Super close to the light house and the Seawall picnic area where we went to stargaze. We watched the sunset 2 mins away from the house as well. Honestly perfect for what we needed!

Fall trip to Acadia

College buddies and wives had a great stay on Mt. Desert Island. We liked the slower pace of this side of the island but was an easy and beautiful drive to Bar Harbor and Acadia NP. House is a good representation of homes in the area, nothing fancy but functional.

Bass Harbor Hideaway

We enjoyed being on the quiet side of Acadia National Park! Our grandson enjoyed the outside property! Although the inside was a bit dated, we really enjoyed the 2 bathrooms and having 2 floors! It was warm and cozy! We especially appreciated all the extras - all the amenities were there and then some!!

It was in the 50s when we got in but the thermostat downstairs was pulled out of the wall. Without heat, we were directed to the cellar area in the adjoining unit to turn on the main boiler and open windows to control the temp. With all the windows open, the house was almost 90 degrees the remainder of the night. The choice was too cold or too hot, so we were exhausted the next day at the park. Total bummer.

Peaceful Bass Harbor

Great location, across the Harbor and a short drive to busy Bar Harbor. This is a n older traditional historic Maine home, very comfortable and cozy. Very peaceful. The owners provided everything you need, even a washer and dryer. My family and I really appreciated the activity and restaurant guides the owners provided. We followed their recommendations and it made our experience even better.

Comfortable lodging

Enjoyed our stay. The hostess was helpful, communicated very well with clear instructions. The house had a lovely view in the front, however, we were in the back unit which has no views but we didn’t realize it till we arrived. If you’re spending considerable time in Bar Harbor, be aware that it is about 35 minutes each way.

Visiting from Kansas

Enjoyed our stay very much. We, however, wish the heater/furnace had been on. Also, need to make the television instructions more clear. Only mention streaming, and state there is no cable in your instructions.

Stay

The only problem with the place is that it had a smell to it. I think it was the carpet because upstairs didn’t smell. Parking was a tight squeeze also since it’s a duplex and two cars were already there. Other than that we had a fabulous time and we enjoyed our stay.

Happy with my stay

The property is very clean and in a good location: in a quiet neighborhood, still within 30 mins driving distance to the Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The property description is accurate: old fashioned house but well maintained. The bathroom on the second floor is a bit small, not problem for my family as we are not big. The bathroom on the ground floor is quite big size and should meet all the needs. Overall, we are happy with our stay in this property and we will consider coming back next year. Thank you!

Girls getaway

The house was in a great location - close to Southwest Harbor, Seawall, all things Acadia National Park. The house has a well equipped kitchen, very comfortable beds and comfortable living room. However, it could use some tender loving care. Kitchen and baths are very “ vintage”. And we were blessed with cool nights so we did not need to use the fans in the home. They are all in need of a good cleaning. Would have liked a new sponge in the kitchen and travel sizes of shampoo and conditioner instead of large sizes. It’s a great little spot. The quiet side of the island for sure. Lots of deer in the yard at dusk.

Wonderful Acadia getaway

We love coming to Acadia, and this house was a gem. Check in and check out process was seamless and all information was provided well ahead of time, which is always appreciated. The property is so nice. It is the posterior aspect of a two family house and my family of four had ample room to spread out. The kitchen is equipped with everything that you need, and I always appreciate considerate host touches like having saran wrap, basic spices, etc. in case I forget things. We had a view of the harbor, which was lovely. So nice to have outdoor space as well. Our first night we walked to the restaurant across the street and had a great meal! FYI there is a designated patio space for each unit, though they are situated quite close to each other. (The other renters sat outside and smoked continuously throughout the day which was not pleasant for us, so we did not use ours very much unfortunately). But otherwise we loved the outdoor space as well as the garage to store our bikes. In summary I would rent this house again in a heartbeat! We hope to be back in a year or two.

Wonderful experience staying right on the harbor! We were in the area during the busy 4th of July time and loved visiting Acadia and Bar Harbor. The best part was coming back to our quiet hideaway to rest up for our next day of exploring. There was an issue with our heat that was taken care of immediately. HIGHLY recommend this spot--oh, and be sure to check out Echo Lake, which is super close.

Meh.

We just returned from vacationing in New England and stayed 3 different places. This was our least favorite place. The house felt old, tired, and in need of a fresh update. The heater blasted us with scorching air and it was so difficult to regulate that we had to open the windows. This was our happy surprise; the windows were operable so we could get relief from the runaway heat. Overall, I would say it was just okay.

My family has been coming to Mount Desert Island (MDI) since 1991. We love the character of Bass Harbor village--the slower pace of life here, the sound of the bell buoys on the water, and the unique beauty and history of MDI. There really is no place in the world like it!

As my parents have gotten older, the next generation has stepped in to manage our summer vacation home for visitors. Our goal for each of you is to allow you to experience the simple beauty of the island and to fall in love with it, just as we have.

Our house is divided by an interior wall into two separate homes: Harbor View Cottage in the front (https://www.vrbo.com/1565813) and Bass Harbor Hideaway in the back (this listing). Harbor View Cottage is larger, more updated, and offers a picturesque view of Bass Harbor from the living room bay window. Bass Harbor Hideaway is less updated, more rustic, and offers a great value for this prime island location.

Our family also owns a ski townhouse rental property in Breckenridge, Colorado: "BreckenDen" (https://www.vrbo.com/892238). Please let us know if we can answer any questions about our rental properties. We'd love to have you stay with us!

Why they chose this property

Bass Harbor is a active fishing/lobstering village with a mix of vacationers and year-round residents. We love that our side of the island---known as the 'Quiet Side'---is not busy or commercial, but has held onto the original character of the area. Stay with us and you'll get a true sense of the beauty and slower pace of coastal Maine (away from tour buses and traffic!).

Because our home is right across the street from the harbor, visitors enjoy cool sea breezes and the sounds of bell buoys and fog horns--all things you'd miss with rentals that aren't at the water's edge.

What makes this property unique

Bass Harbor Hideaway is functional, clean and comfortable, but has not been updated. For this reason, we are able to offer it at a price that is significantly lower than other area rentals. It's a great value for the area!

Bass Harbor Hideaway is across the street and up the hill from Bass Harbor, a scenic marina filled with lobster boats. It is also walking distance to the Seafood Ketch restaurant. Step back in time as the fog rolls in, imagining the area's nautical history, which includes the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and surrounding seafaring community.
