Great Family Cabin
My family and I stayed for the full month of July this summer and had a great experience. The property has everything you need and most importantly is a short walk to the Tahoe Park private beach. The house is clean and very comfortable with a great front porch and backyard. Ample parking and the neighbors are very friendly. After spending a month in the area, we felt like this is the best location in Tahoe. Short walk to a great beach and the new market which has everything you need. Easy ride into Tahoe City.
Tahoe Park Awesomeness
Our entire family (and family dog) recently stayed at this terrific Tahoe Park cabin. The cabin itself is awesome, with plenty of room for everyone. There was literally nothing it lacked, down to a great hot tub, comfy beds, wireless internet and well appointed kitchen. And the location? How about an easy 5 minute walk to the Tahoe Park Association beach, Sunnyside Restaurant, Firesign Restaurant and a 5-10 minute drive to Tahoe City. Curtis was fantastic to deal with. Professional, easy and provided us with any and all information before we arrived. We'll be back!
We arrived to find the unit not vacuumed, swept and Dirty Sheets!! Spent the day doing laundry, and had to buy detergent, tp, and dishwasher soap. When trying to get ahold of landlord, the neighbor was sent over to take complaints. I understand the owner is selling the place, but really should drive to property and check on it once in awhile! Front window does not lock. Back door to inlaw unit was unlocked, and windows upstairs were left open. Owner needs to use a property management company not the neighbor. Also, refridg doesnt keep food cold. Butter was soft and milk was warm. My sister in law who rented this house for the family only got half of non refundable cleaning deposit back - Really??? Good part, was the location was perfect and upstairs bath was nice. Ps, hot tub needed to be cleaned so couldn't use till the day we left!
I am always interested in constructive comments so that I can improve the experience of my clients. Regarding the comments above, It is amazing how some people feel empowered by the anonymity of the internet to smear others.
I have used my cleaners for over a year had have only had excellent feed back from clients, including the ones immediately preceding. In addition, the prior clients left a handwritten note stating that they had washed the sheets and cleaned the house, and then followed up with a text message stating how much they enjoyed their stay and would like to return next year. Nonetheless, my cleaner took nothing for granted and did a full cleaning—again—prior to the arrival of Karen’s party. So the house was cleaned not once but twice for her. So you can imagine my surprise when she called and complained about the cleaning.
I received a call from Karen shortly after her arrival. She immediately asked for a refund of the cleaning fee, which I found odd, never having had such request before. I asked my cleaner to stop by to assess. The house was in order and he found the party seated at dinner and clearly enjoying themselves. There was no cleaning going on or any evidence that the clients had been cleaning.
The cleaner found the hot tub clean and in working order. Karen could not have known, however, that the hot tub, had just required major servicing which included—yes—a complete change of water in the tub.
Regarding the fridge. No repairs were done and two sets of clients since Karen have had no complaints. Need I say more? Perhaps one of the Karen's guests left the fridge door slightly ajar over night or altered the temperature setting in the wrong direction.
The only true comment made by the writer is that the house is for sale. As it turns out, the realtor happened to stop by for a visit to inspect the home for a showing. She, like the departing guests, was so impressed with the house that she left the following handwritten note: “Thank you for having the house look so good!”
I suppose that if I had agreed to refund the entire cleaning deposit that I could have bought the silence of Karen and party but I don’t appreciate being bullied and, as a matter of principle, don't respond to such tactics, especially when the complaints are without merit.
A fantastic place to stay!
We stayed for two nights, and had an unbelievable time! The house was perfect, and was very clean when we arrived. There are 4 bedrooms, so our group was able to sleep very comfortably. The location is perfect... close to Tahoe city, the beach, walking paths, and Sunnyside restaurant/bar. We would highly recommend staying here!
Nice house, challenging landlord
I very rarely write reviews, certainly not negative reviews, but I feel like I should warn people about dealing with this landlord. From the time I secured the listing it was struggle, poor communication and inconsistent information.
The first bad sign was that when I sent check for the property along with my deposit, my deposit check was cashed. I have rented many properties via VRBO and I have never had a deposit check cashed. When I inquired I was told my money would be returned within 2-4 weeks of my stay assuming everything was in order.
Next issue: The house has a in-law apartment attached that is ONLY rented to someone with the party renting the large unit. I had friends that expressed interest and I connected them with the landlord. After exchanging initial emails back and forth he informed my friend that the apartment was already rented. Turned out it was a misunderstanding and my friends did secure the rental, but it took multiple calls from my friends and me to clear up the confusion.
I have saved the best for last. When we arrived we noticed that the refrigerator was not cold. We adjusted the temperature setting inside the refrigerator and placed items inside, hoping it would cool down in time. Unfortunately, it did not get any colder so we moved our perishables into a cooler and into the downstairs unit refrigerator. I called the landlord to let him know and request that he have it looked at if possible. Next we noticed that the dishwasher was VERY touchy and you had to finesse it to get the water to turn on. We managed to use throughout our stay, but I also mentioned it to the landlord for his information. Much to my surprise, I received the following email after my stay:
“I arranged for a repair person to come and assess both the dishwasher and the fridge. He found both appliances to be in working order. In fact, he found the fridge to be too cold and recommended not leaving it so cold when no one is there. As I mentioned in my orientation email, I am happy to pay for legitimate repairs but ask clients to pay for service visits that are not warranted. The service visit was $99.00 and I have deducted this amount from your security deposit.”
The bottom line, I was charged for being inconvenienced in the rental property and sharing valuable information with the landlord. Unbelievable.
Needless to say, I do NOT recommend this property.
I regret that this client was dissatisfied and hope that my response will provide some perspective on the situation.
With respect to the security deposit. I do cash them. I have had the unfortunate experience where a client caused substantial damage, and then stopped payment on the security deposit check. I ultimately had to go to court to (with all the additional expense and time) to be vindicated. Prior to the preceding experience I never cashed security deposit checks but, learning from my experience, I do now. I never told the client her check would not be cashed and please note that she did receive her refund in 2-4 weeks, as promised.
The misunderstanding concerning the apartment was that her friend was supposed to reference the client in her inquiry for rental of the apartment and did not. I only rent the apartment and main cabin simultaneously to friends and when both parties are agreeable. Not realizing that it was the client's friend making the inquiry I initially declined the request for rental of the apartment. This is, perhaps, the "poor communication and inconsistent information" referred to.
Regarding the refrigerator issue, the client is correct. I did charge her for the service charge. She was advised in advance that this could occur if a repair technician found no equipment malfunction. It is not uncommon for clients to omit reading operating instructions or to fail do basic trouble shooting that one would do in one's own home. A professional technician confirmed in writing that both dishwasher and fridge were in working order. Perhaps the client had unreasonable expectations regarding refrigerator temperature. Each service charge is costly and, when unwarranted, is unfair to the owner and to other clients as rates ultimately increase to cover such needless expenses.
What the client failed to mention was that our written agreement called for only one pet and she had two on the premises. The agreement expressly states that the client will forfeit the entire security deposit if more than the agreed upon number of persons or pets are allowed on the premises. As there was no significant damage I did not invoke this clause. By right, I could have kept the entire security deposit AND charged her for the needless service visit. Instead, I charged her only for my out-of-pocket costs. I thought this was quite generous and my thanks for this kindness is the letter above.
Relaxing Right at Lake Tahoe
We rented the Cabin for a weekend to get away from the city and enjoy the nature around Lake Tahoe.
The hot tub, the bbq, the beach (though not a sand beach) in walking distance made our stay very enjoyable.
There is a cute breakfast place down the road and also kayak and bike rental shops. We did all of that and had a great time. There are biking paths along the lake and the river.
The house is nice and well maintained. As you can see in the pictures there is a lot of wood inside which makes it cozy (especially in the winter when you can heat up the gas fire place) but also a little dark.
It was very easy to rent the place and all relevant information where provided upfront.
Thank you Michaela for your kind comments. It was a pleasure having you and I hope you will consider Alpine Escape again in the future.
The Cabin is located in Tahoe Park, an exclusive residential community on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. Surrounded by pine trees, the area has a distinct mountainous feel; yet we are only 2 miles from the center of Tahoe city with many restaurants, shops, and other activities. A perfect location to get away from it all yet to not be too far from essential modern conveniences.
