About the host
Hosted by Elizabeth
Just months after we met, my future husband Timothy asked if I wanted to enter a lottery with him to build a house at the former Robert Mueller Municipal Airport in Austin, Texas. We both entered, and despite the temptation, bought only one house. In 2020, we built this garage apartment in our back yard and had a great time decorating it with our future guests in mind! Read more about us and the construction of the apartment on our website, https://www.mccloskeycorner.com.
Why they chose this property
Mueller is a mixed-use development on the site of Austin's old municipal airport. It's an award-winning New Urbanist development designed around community-crafted goals including diversity and affordability, revitalization and compatibility with surrounding neighborhoods, and sustainability. The neighborhood is walkable, with miles of tree-lined streets, greenbelts, and parks and nearby restaurants and entertainment.
We love how environmentally minded the neighborhood is. Shortly after we moved in, we installed solar panels as part of the Mueller Megawatt Project, a neighbor-led effort to install a megawatt of residential rooftop solar. We also have contributed to smart grid research by a local nonprofit, Pecan Street.

What makes this property unique
Timothy and I share a love for good design. We were fortunate to work with a very talented architect, who thoughtfully fit a lot of amenities into a compact space. The soaring trusses over the balcony and warm vaulted wood ceiling are our favorite parts of her design. From there, we outfitted the apartment with high quality furnishings and art with fun pops of color.
