About Nancy Lazarus

Rick and Nancy Lazarus live south of Ithaca and love Cayuga Lake and the sunsets from its east shore. This is our summer lake house, a quiet retreat.

Why Nancy Lazarus chose Cayuga Lake

The lake access and views are great, plus Bill George Road is a quiet and wooded road great for walking and bike riding. There are some houses on the lake side and a couple of small gorges. Great blue herons fly up and down the lake every day. Owls hoot at night. Rick is a timber frame barn restorer and he built this charming little house about 10 years ago.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We truly loved our stay and it reminded me so much of a family cabin we

used to enjoy. We have already thought about a return stay so don't be

suprised! Thanks again for sharing your little retreat.

Quiet, comfortable and cozy

  • 5 of 5

This is a charming, hand built cabin on Lake Cayuga; close to vineyards, farmlands, waterfalls and Ithaca if you want lunch at the Moosewood Café! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cabin is small but comfortable, beautifully designed and very nicely appointed - there is just about any kitchen utensil that you might have use of ( a salad spinner! ); the appliances, though simple are very efficient; and in case you forgot your reading materials, there is a small library there with interesting books. We sat on the deck out side with coffee, listening in the morning to the loons, wood thrushes and woodpeckers. Took the kayaks out and explored the shore, slept soundly in the little loft and a large, incredibly sweet Maine Coon Cat named Wembley strolled down from the neighbor's house to visit. We were happy and relaxed when we left and would return in a moment's notice. Thank you, Nancy for sharing your very cool home.

Perfect

I wish we could have stayed longer. Lots of waterfalls near by to explore. The boat house is right on the water supplied with kayaks. The water is clean. Coffee was supplied which was very appreciated. The bed was comfy. Next time were coming for a week instead of a weekend.

Cute little place on the lake.

  • 4 of 5

Adorable cottage with great views of the lake. There are multiple decks on the way down to the lake so you can find the perfect spot to view a sunset over the lake; or just enjoy it from the dock! Everything was nice and clean, nicely decorated, with flowers inside and out. The bed up in the loft was very comfortable. The handheld shower took a little getting used to. Nice amenities like kayaks, bikes and gas grill. The owner responded quickly when we had an issue and was very accommodating. Couldn't be nicer.

Cute spot, would return

  • 4 of 5

We (20 something outdoorsy couple) really loved this place. It definitely isn't for everyone; it is basically "glamping" in that the running water isn't potable (plenty of potable water was provided), the cabin isn't insulated, you are kind of remote, etc. But if you are like us, there are definite advantages in those traits. The finger lakes is a beautiful area, especially mid October. Ithaca is a really nice town and an easy drive from this cabin. Wembly is an outdoor cat (whos name tag says "cookie" and has 7 toes on each front paw) that would come by and hang out with us a lot. This cat was quite possibly the favorite part of our vacation. We're both mildly allergic and have always wanted an outdoor cat (apartment dwellers, not an option) so what a surprise when a few times a day Wembly would stroll by, ask for some belly rubs, lounge on the decks with us, go on walks, and then just stroll off. Too cool. He probably liked the cabin because there is definitely a mouse presence, hence one star deduction here. I sympathize with the owner because it is definitely a difficult structure to mouse proof, there are 3 high pitched sound emitters, and there is a cat with overloaded front paws on the hunt yet they still get in. That said, the interior is still really cute, well stocked with knick knacks and doodads, books, maps of the area, all sorts of kitchen things including all the pots and pans you'll need, an induction stove (loved this thing, wish i had one) a microwave, etc. Outside was really nice. We enjoyed sitting on the private deck over the water at night and staring at the stars or moon, taking long exposure pictures and such. Very nice place, would definitely come back again. Maybe earlier in the year to take advantage of the kayaks though!

Owner's Response: Thank you M and N for taking the time to write this very thorough review. We're happy that you enjoyed your chilly-weather-in-October stay. Much of this review made me smile, but I have a couple of things to note. First, I really think that "glamping" is rather much an exaggeration. The cabin is rustic, but very comfortable. The tap water comes directly from our 400-foot-deep lake; supplying drinking water is a just-in-case measure. The description of Wembly, the beloved by all cat, is absolutely true. And, as country dwellers know, it's also true that when cold weather arrives, little field mice go exploring, looking for winter quarters. We do what we can to encourage any who check out the cabin to look elsewhere. Wembly probably does contribute to that effort. The lake is beautiful and this is a sweet place that has welcomed many happy "campers" (human, that is).

This is my happy place...

  • 5 of 5

For the second year in a row we treated ourselves to a week in this cabin. I love how simple things are and how relaxing it is. Nancy makes us feel like long-time family friends. The lake is beautiful, and it is great to have kayaks right there so we don't have to haul our own. We like to use the grill and enjoy easy dinners on the deck. Ithaca is a short drive away, as are plenty of hiking opportunities and wine and cider tastings. This is the place to enjoy a rustic get away!

This was a sweet, quiet retreat. Everything you could wish for in a lakeside cabin and more!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I booked this cabin for a long weekend romantic getaway, and we were not disappointed! It is a beautiful, immaculate, well-appointed space to get away from it all and enjoy the lake and spectacular sunsets in peace and quiet. Every detail was perfect and Nancy (and Rick) go out their way to make you feel welcome in their slice of heaven on Cayuga Lake.

We will DEFINITELY be coming back. One of the best vacations I can remember. So incredibly relaxing!!
