Incorporated in 1880, the charming historic town of Salida was named as one of the 'ten best places to live' by television’s Fine Living program. Salida is known for its mild climate, plentiful outdoor recreational opportunities, and burgeoning arts scene, including the well-respected Salida Museum. It’s set beneath the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range to the south and the Sawatch Range to the northwest with its 15 peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation (which is why the region’s nickname is the “14ers Region.” The section of Arkansas River that runs near the town is world-famous for whitewater rafting and kayaking.

One of our guest said it best..'It is much prettier than the pictures lead you to believe. Hot tub is right outside the back door and fenced on one side for privacy. Property manager was super and responded quickly to all questions. We saw llama, deer and wild turkeys wandering around the neighborhood while we stayed. Easy access to both the Monarch ski resort and the town of Salida. A Walmart about 6 miles into town so if you forget something, easy to take care of.'

About Leona Taylor

We live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. It has been a long time dream to live in Colorado, this cabin is a start. We feel quite fortunate to be able to share this special spot with other travelers.

Leona Taylor purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Leona Taylor chose Salida

We loved the river and convenient location to year round activities and the town of Salida. This area offers all we were looking for and so much more.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin has all the conveniences you could want, but the river and fire pit give a feeling of camping outdoors. We get the best of both worlds. It is peaceful to sit under the covered porch and watch the rain or enjoy whatever wildlife might happen by. While there are neighbors within walking distance, the cabin is secluded and relaxing.

My husband and I spent our 25th wedding anniversery in the Monarch Cabin. The listing description is accurate. It was very clean and had all we could ask for. We travel with German Shepherds and the dogs love it. Salida is 10 -15 mintues away. Our morning were spent enjoying the fall color and a good hike. We were back to the cabin by 1pm at the latest for a dip in the private hot tub, a nap and then in to Salida for some very enjoyable meals. The kitchen is fully furnished and we cook several good meals there as well. I would highly recommend this outfit for those who are traveling with a pet and those who are not.

Recommended for:Romantic getaway, age 55+, pet owners, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, girls getaway.

Weekend get away

  • 5 of 5

Nice stay. The great room is larger than the pictures seemed. Nice gas fireplace and the hot tub was easy to use. There is a large stock of books and DVDs for the player so don't bring a bunch like we did. Warm and cozy. If you crack the windows you can hear the creek from the master bedroom. The fire pit is creekside and was perfect for making smores. The pull out mattress was a little squishy, but after all, it's a pull out, so it was fine. Quiet neighborhood with lots of privacy. 15 minutes from town and Salida is cute with charm. The appliances worked well and the pantry is well stocked with spices, pots, pans, utensils, charcoal for the grill, etc. If you are allowed by the owner to bring a dog, be advised the neighbor 100 yards north east lets their dogs outside off lead with no fence. I did not have a dog, but was barked at on a walk. They kept a distance and I never felt threatened. Overall very nice stay. Well worth the price.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Marni, for the review. I do hope you found and used the pump for the air top mattress on the pull out couch. Usually, that makes the bed pretty comfortable. We changed out the traditional mattress for the air top mattress to make it not so squishy. As for the dogs, we walk with our dog. The dogs down the road do bark but never leave their property. I think they have an electric fence. Very happy to hear you enjoyed your visit. Hope you can come back again. Leona

The private cabin with absolutely everything!

  • 5 of 5

Because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and cannot do stairs as well as 1 of our 2 dogs who is 15-16 and cannot do stairs, I have to spend weeks trying to find the perfect cabin. We have stayed in some very nice cabins--but they never had every single thing we needed and more until this trip! This cabin is at the end of the road, private, no stairs going into house, inside the house or going out the back of the house. The bedroom has a King size bed, and very nice warm gas stove in the den, a hot tub right out the back door! The bed was very comfortable with very nice linens. At the side/back of the cabin is the creek. The owners have set up a very cool area with a firepit by the creek with picnic table and other tree stumps and bench for sitting. The kitchen has anything you could want. Very well stocked. We didn't have to call the owners once. Very easy directions for the cabin's heating, hot tub, etc. One thing unique about this cabin is the basket of snacks and sample bottles of wine--never had that anywhere else in 2 states! But the absolute first thing we always have to find is dog-friendly, especially for 2 dogs. But this cabin is dog-friendly too! Our dogs had a blast running around! We'll definitely be back! We had cell service the whole time! Thanks Taylors!
