About Dean Roberts

We are Dean and Dana Roberts, two lifelong ranchers. Our ranch is working Angus cattle ranch. We love the western cowboy lifestyle and know that you will enjoy your stay at our out of the way cabin.

Dean Roberts purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Dean Roberts chose South Central

We built the cabin as a private getaway for our family and friends, just a short ways from our ranch home. Our visitors enjoyed it so much that we decided to invite more or our "friends" to join us at the Post Office Ranch Cabin. The Post Office ranch is built around one of the original post offices in the valley.

What makes this cabin unique

The Post Office Ranch is located just off Hwy 50 on well maintained gravel roads. The cabin is remote and quiet, yet convenient to Salida and Monarch Ski Resort. The South Arkansas River is just a short walk from your deck. We know that any angler will enjoy the private fishing on over a mile of cottonwood lined mountain stream. Just across the river is BLM land, ready to explore.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mu husband and I spent a long relaxing weekend at the Post Office Ranch with my parents this spring. The cabin is well equipped and very peaceful. We really enjoyed watching the horses in the field through the giant picture window. Even though it was rainy and snowy for much of our stay, the cabin was so cozy we didn't care about the weather. When the sun did poke through, the views were amazing. We would certainly recommend the Post Office Ranch to anyone looking for a quiet place to relax with great access to the mountains and Salida.

Take care,

Post Office Ranch Log Cab Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Its a working cattle ranch so you get to watch the cows (better than watching TV!) with the mountains as the backdrop. Cabin really well designed and spotless. Much too big for just the two of us (I think the other cabin on the property is bigger but not sure) but price was great so we would go back again for sure. Big big porch and really close enough to Salida that while you are in Poncha Springs as Salida is just next door. Owner personally gives you a tour of the place and answers questions you have in advance which is nice. You have an outdoor fire pit and a can walk to a lake and the river / creek? on the property.

Cows are really polite too. They get out of your way if you want to walk to the river.

Perfect CO Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Lovely cabin. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook a nice meal for two families. We also really enjoyed the wraparound porch and fire pit area. Best of all, there was a great stream within a 1/4 mile with plenty of 8-12 inch Brown and Brook trout.

Well-crafted cabin - Finland Designers

  • 4 of 5

Dean Roberts is a humble host that will give-you-the-key-and-let-you-be. The overall experience was pleasant and the cabin has all the basic essentials necessary for cooking in the kitchen, watching TV, staying connected with the WiFi, or sitting on the expansive deck gazing at the pasture and foothills in the distant. There are plenty of local attractions in Chaffee county. We hike Mount Antero and drove our 4x4 Tacoma up to timberline - what a fun trip. There is also the hot springs which is nice to visit or the less popular Cottonwood Hot Springs down in Buena Vista. The other nearby town of Salida is filled with art galleries, restaurants and a few coffee shops. A newly opened wine bar at the junction of Poncha Springs, named "Vino" is exquisite with a good local wine selection and reasonably priced tasting. They also have chocolate covered potato chips if you want to try something different. Life is what you make it, as someone once said, and this cabin has what you need. Keep in mind, although it sleeps 9 people, the loft is only accessible by a ship's ladder designed by Thomas Jefferson (really cool) and there are four beds up in the loft. So you will be able to hear everyone else. It was quaint for just the two of us (me and my wife, Prudence). There are horses on the property and they are beautiful to look at too.

True to Internet photos.

The entrance to the office should be more evident. The two story pink stucco was easy to see, but the entryway was not clearly marked.

Post Office Ranch

  • 5 of 5

The Post Office Ranch Log Cabin provided a beautiful getaway! The cabin was clean and well kept. We loved the porch and views of the mountains. The cabin is gorgeous and accommodated our group very well. It is a nice distance from the town of Salida and local hot springs. We would definitely recommend the cabin to others and hope to go back again ourselves.

We had an excellent stay at Dean's cabin.

  • 5 of 5

The Post Office Cabin is a great getaway in rural Colorado and offers excellent sweeping mountain vistas in an idyllic setting. It is important to note that the Cabin is on a working ranch; the larger adjacent property is Dean's home, although you have plenty of privacy on the ranch. We had a BBQ and fire at night, with wood provided by Dean, took the Salida taxi into town for drinks, and enjoyed everything this part of Colorado has to offer. One tip for Dean: meet the clients at the Post Office Cabin to do the contract signing as opposed to the main house; it gives a better first impression. Thanks for the great stay!
