Pahoa Estate Rental Photos and Description

Private, 2 Bedroom, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4+) 3rd bedroom cottage available.

My Big Island home, near Kapoho and close to Pahoa, Seaview, Black Sands Beach, tropical thermal pools on the ocean, in Old Hawaii, is a unique, custom-built, round, house located in a clearing at the top of a long approach hill, on ten acres of completely secluded rain forest. Has a view of Mauna Kea and forested hills. It is completely private and in a very relaxed setting. The house is solar powered and equipped with all modern comforts and appliances. It has a spacious 500 sq ft. bedroom with a queen sized bed and a double bed and the second bedroom upstairs has a queen bed. There is also a double futon sleeper upstairs in the great room. Upstairs floor features huge kitchen, living room, with 3 sets of french doors that open onto a huge outdoor living room/ lanai/ dining room with also an extra sleeping futon (comfortable one ) for visitors and friends. The second private bedroom is upstairs and the huge master suite is downstairs. The open-plan design of the whole of the house works for a family, or small group, or for just two people. There is also a second cottage available for $30 per night if your party is larger. It is located right beside the main house and is comfortable furnished with a queen bed also. There is lots of art in our home, which is used just for guests, friends or exchangers, and it is beautifully, comfortably and completely furnished for your use during your stay. Cleaning services are available for a reasonable fee from our year-round, nearby caretaker. Security damage deposit can be covered at your option by a low cost VRBO or Homeaway policy. Simply ask.

The house will be beautifully prepared for you, and all ready for your tropical stay. Cleanliness is a most important part of your guest experience. Our home is equipped with washer and dryer. Ultra Clean always, unlike lots of others.

The kitchen is exceptionally well-equipped for dining and cooking, as I love to cook and when I vacation there myself I always shop and cook locally, with fresh ingredients.

We provide directions to our guests for doing the same locally, including all the special, nearby 'farmers markets,' and also info. on favorite places to dine nearby. Our open-style home has no need for AC, just the beautiful Trade winds and sea breezes that blow up the hill, gently, and throughout the house, though we also have tropical ceiling fans. The keynote here is 'comfort first' even though all furnishings are artistic and appealing. Bring a book or two to enjoy in the hammock! This is pure relaxation, which we all need, and love!

About Sharon Dodge

I built this custom home over six years, with carefully selected Eco-friendly materials, and methods. It is 'off the grid' and has it's own fresh water supply and the electrical is all solar powered. It is an 'indoor/outdoor' open stye home perfect for the year round mild Hawaain climate with three sets of french doors that open out from the main great room onto a large 800 square foot Ipe'wooden deck under an extended roof where you will lounge comfortably, barbecue, read in the giant hammock or enjoy our outdoor living room, and outdoor dining table. There is an extra rental bedroom cottage on the property available for an additional small fee, which allows us to comfortably sleep 8-10. Ask about it.

Why Sharon Dodge chose Puna District

The house is luxurious in look and feel, and is at the end of the road at the top of the hill on a gorgeous ten acre parcel and if you want, you will have no visitors( though our caretaker lives nearby if you need her.). It is clear and planted with fruits, spice nut and coffee trees and shrubs as well as flowers and is perfect seclusion in a setting of great natural beauty , with lots of room and is all your own, while you are there. You will not be disturbed by anyone. And except for visiting the local sites -warm thermal ponds, Mauna Kea Observatory, ocean swimming, gardens, waterfalls, and the volcano, you will not want to leave. This is the relaxed lush side of the Big Island and ours is the perfect place for lovers, friends or even individuals who want to truly get away from it all. A day and a night often feels like three, as time slows down for you there. Perfect counterpoint to the more touristed parts of this or any Hawaiin island stay. The house is wonderfully comfortable even luxurious in feel and the extra guest cottage will make it comfortable for one or two, or as many as 10.

What makes this estate unique

You will awaken to birdsong, a chorus at dawn and go to sleep to gentle sounds of the melodic tree frogs in the forst. The sun rises on one one side of our deck and sets on the other. Restful. Yet it is also a great starting point to explore nearby Kilauea and it's near continuous Lava flow since 1989. ( But do not worry, you are far from it's lava flow.)

Or.. you can crank up your music on the" plug in your device to our sound system" as loud as you like. There is no one near enough to be bothered! Your private paradise for a relaxing stay. The master bedroom on the lower floor is roomy, over 500 square feet and the queen bed is so comfortable you will wish you could take it home with you. All bedding is luxury quality. A lot of people believe you sleep deeper and dream more, in a round house. We have found it to be true out there in our tropical 'piece o' paradise'.

Perfect stay

Three friends and me spent three nights in the Round House. We enjoyed every Minute here. It is a fabulous spot to relax. We found everything we needed in the house and even more. It was all clean and nicely prepared. I am happy we choose this place.

Beyond good - it was absolutely what we needed

  • 4 of 5

We spent 7 nights in Hawaii. Our first four nights were in Kailua Kona, and we had a great time. We stayed in a typical tourist condo, well manicured facilities, and quite comfortable. After acclimating to the island, we were ready to feel like locals. Our trip to the Round House fit the bill!

My first thought was that we were in the middle of no-where! (and that's a good thing). It's really not that far from Hilo, but it definitely felt like we were in the middle of the island. We didn't spend too much time at the house. We finished our days around 6pm, and fell asleep by 9pm, but boy was it absolutely relaxing.

The nights were a trip. I don't know that I've ever heard anything so loud! The crickets, the frogs, and whatever else was in the trees. Personally I loved it. It was like a lullaby to me. When the rain came down, what a sound!

If you want the pleasures of condo life, go to Kailua Kona. If you want to feel what it must be like to be a local in the middle of a tropical paradise, there's only one place to go in Hawaii - the Round House.

Incredible, perfect, beautiful, peaceful, amazing. Words cannot describe how wonderful...

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent 11 wonderful nights at the Round House. We will never stay anywhere else on the Big Island. Sharon is amazing, responds promptly to emails and texts, and she wants her guests happy. Her caretaker, Jasmine, clearly loves this house and prepares it beautifully for guests. Both Sharon and Jasmine responded right away to questions we had during our stay.

This house and property are incredible. You enter up a long driveway into Paradise. The house is surrounded by a large grassy area, with many fruit trees, the solar and water systems, and beyond that, jungle. The house is huge and open with many doors and windows that allow the breeze, the sun, and the sounds of the jungle in from all directions. The deck has many areas to relax. Everything is spotless, the kitchen has everything you could ever need to cook and live happily ever after without ever leaving the property, once you have food and beverages. The decor is lovely. Upstairs, via a stairway on the outside of the house, is the main living area, a small bedroom, the beautiful kitchen, and a lovely bathroom. The beautiful and large master bedroom downstairs has a walk-in shower, and a washer/dryer. The bugs are few. We rarely shut the doors or windows, except when leaving. We never saw a soul our entire visit on the property. The stars, the coquis, the sunrises and sunsets, views of Mauna Kea, peace, tranquility. That is what this home is all about.

It was the perfect retreat. If you need screens on every door, air conditioning (there’s ceiling fans), a pool with a bar, and sunburned tourists around you, this is not the place for you. Also, you need to be able to manage stairs. We had adequate cell and internet to send text messages, make phone calls, and check email, but if you need to stream music or video 24/7, this is not the place to stay.

Hot Dog Man is a walk down the road, Pahoa is a few minutes away by car (look for Fish Man on the corner across from the library selling fresh fish from a cooler), Lava Tree is an easy morning jog or walk, and it’s easy to get to any part of the Island within a few hours. Go to the Hilo Fish Market for cheap tuna and great Poke, Uncle Roberts Market on Wednesday nights, and stay home and lie out in the grass at night and watch the stars.

No other place could ever be better. It is a place to relax, heal, and get away from life. Perfection. You will love it. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Sharon, for sharing your amazing home.

Owner's Response: Thank you Rebecca. We enjoyed hosting you all. **Note on the internet service - a very robust satellite service became available a few months after your stay, and now the Round House has a 150 gigs a month and a very fast service. I believe for other reasons the Round House is not the place to stay if you want to be digitized and on line every minute of every day of your stay ( What a waste of the place.) but now at least if you have to you can be if you must. And streaming music and movies is now no problem. Lightening fast connection and wireless throughout all ten acres too!

Big Island Refuge

  • 5 of 5

Sometimes, even locals need to getaway for a while. Burnout happens even here in Hawaii, for much of the same reasons it happens on the mainland. Twice now I've stayed here when I've felt a need for recharge, and each time reminds me why I came here in the first place. Sharon's roundhouse retreat is a fantastic place to connect with the authentic nature of Lower Puna, and reconnect in quiet with yourself or others.

First, let's talk location. I live not far from here, and I know the area well. The roundhouse is well situated to grant access to some of our best naturals features: Poihiki and the Trail of Craters hiking access. For outdoor enthusiasts whom want to explore an active holiday and retire to a comfortable basecamp, this location is perfect. Surf, swim, fish, bike, hike a'a' fields into the park, whatever you like to do actively in Puna, this location is well situated. At the end of the day, reliable power and signal (not always available here) means you can get a hot shower, a cold drink and upload pictures while planning for the next day. For active vacationers, this is an ideal location.

This isn't to soft-sell the property itself. The lot is expansive, and private. The treeline has been beatback a fair distance, not always something easily accomplished here in Puna. This means that at night, the coquis (tree frogs) song is soft. I highly enjoyed taking it in after a long day out, sitting in a raised hammock with my partner, sipping a mojito. I imagine many other will as well.

Inside, you'll find a property well-maintained, with appliances and equipment in good order. The one time I had an issue, I got immediate effort to correct it, and a refund on my trip. The level of customer care is excellent.

I'll briefly mention some things that are not detractions, but advisories. If you believe you many have need of immediate medical attention, this is not the right location. Ambulances take hours to respond here. If you need massive amounts of bandwidth for your holiday, likewise I'd look elsewhere. Internet is sufficient for seeking out the next adventure, not Torrenting music all day. If the sounds of ambulances and delivery trucks are necessary for REM sleep, look for elsewhere. All we have is frogs and rain.

If you do want an respite from the noise, a quiet place for yourself or to share with another, come here. If you've not seen the stars in years, built a fire, or snuggled in a two-person hammock, stay here. Puna welcomes you.

Tropical paradise with amazing energy!

  • 5 of 5

Sometimes you have to journey away to return to a deeper connection to you. If you are seeking a magical jungle spot that feels remote and yet is only a few minutes drive to much of the Puna District then this is your spot.

Not only did the pictures of the roundhouse draw me, but it was the chance to connect with Sharon that made me realize just how special this property is. In fact, after speaking with her I knew it would be a super spot for relaxation and reflection. I loved the idea of being off the grid and being in a quiet spot and yet so near all of the wonderful experiences to be had in the Puna District.

After landing in Hilo and stocking up with groceries at Safeway it was out to the house I went and truthfully I stayed put for the first few days! The hammock was a very restful spot to enjoy the view. I didn't even turn on the stereo system till day 3 and promptly turned it off as it seemed to intrude on the energy of this sacred spot.

I will definitely be back and when my next client wants to have a nurturing getaway on the Big Island this will be my go to spot. Truly once you visit once, I bet you find the same thing. It is oh so beautiful here. If it is your first visit you will feel immediately comfortable with the house booklet outlining details about the property and the area. Plus there is a wealth of guidebooks and some super scrumptious cookbooks too (which could be a good idea as you just might plan on staying in and cooking much of the time if you don't head into Pahoa's downtown to try something yummy there). Enjoy!

Tropical Round House in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

I am on a return trip to Sharon's Tropical Round House, or as I like to call it the Jungle Treehouse. It is a wonderful get-away place. It is located in an area that makes it easy to get to most parts of the island and return to this beautiful house at night. Great kitchen, so cook your own meals or pack your own sandwiches for a picnic. If you are a birder, as I am, just go out to the wrap around deck and watch for the Hawaiian Hawk. What a beauty! This is a very special house, well stocked, well cared for, and welcoming. Hope to return again sometime. Aloha!

Owner's Response: Thank you JB. We so appreciate our return visitors. Loved hearing of your discovery of the hawk, and I will watch for her when I return myself. Mahalo for being such great guests. We know you love the Big Island too! Watch out. That is how the Island claims you!

Ours is a remote rural location close to many major attractions. We have easy access to local farmers markets where you can purchase island grown fruits and vegetables as well as many deliciously prepared foods, with island tastes and familiar favorites also. Close the charming village of Pahoa for Banks, Post office, Gas, Drug store, health food stores Farmer's Market, bookstore DVD Rentals and a couple good bars and great dining spots, store and large Grocery store, and Hardware store

Our house is only 15 minutes from a large natural rock, warm thermal pool and several other such small pools for delicious swimming, next to the Pacific Ocean. Ocean swimming and surfing is located only 20 minutes away by car. Also, great coral reef snorkeling. Located only one hour from Volcanoes National Park and not far from the mostly continuous active eruption of lava (which can also be viewed by helicopter or boat tour.) Two hours from Mauna Kea one of the largest mountains in the world and the largest measured from it's underwater base (year round snow) and home to many of the world's greatest observatories where you find a Star Gazing Visitors' Center for nocturnal adventures, and for amazing sunsets.

Our home is gated, and is special also for what you will not see. You will probably see no one at all during your stay, unless you want to.

The sun rises on one side of the property and sets on the other, with views often of Mauna Kea, with Hawaiian birdsongs at dawn and dusk. We have beautiful, territorial views as well in every direction and inestimable peace for our visitors. You will need a rental car, but a four wheel drive vehicle is not necessary, and there are no parking problems anywhere here.
