About Gabi Fienburgh

The owners, Richard and Gabi first moved to the coast more than 30 years ago, both originally from Europe.

Richard, growing up north of London, left England on the Istanbul Express and ended up in Western Canada. He visited a friend living in Mendocino and fell in love with the coast and the community here and never left. An accomplished musician, he still performs locally from time to time.

Gabi has a similar story, growing up in Germany, she came to visit a friend in Mendocino and after falling in love with the beauty of the pacific coast and the wonderful people, essentially has been here ever since.

They met here on the coast, a notoriously romantic spot, and have been married for 28 years, raised three children and are now proud grandparents of three.

Along the way they developed their own 'design / build' construction company and have built and restored many fine custom homes on the coast.

Gabi is also a licensed massage practitioner and manages a local spa.

Gabi Fienburgh purchased this cottage in 1992

Why Gabi Fienburgh chose Little River

After living on the coast for almost 20 years we finally found a place we wanted to buy. On a quiet rural road inland from the fog belt was a cottage, overgrown and with a glorious blossoming cherry tree hidden behind the house. It felt like it could be our home and over the years we have transformed it into a sunlit, open and peaceful place that is the heart of our family.

What makes this cottage unique

Often, if the coast is foggy, just 3 miles inland the sun is shining and the property, though close to the redwoods, has a mix of pine, fir, cypress trees, rhododendrons and open gardens that let the sun shine on us most of the day. Coming from hazy Europe we are still awed by the clear, dark, star filled night skies.

Perfect retreat in beautiful setting . . .

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have visited the Mendocino Coast area for extended stays regularly for the past twenty years. Discovering the Red Barn Retreat and host/owners Gabi and Richard Fienburgh 3 years ago has truly enhanced vacations in our most favorite place --the Mendocino Coast. The listing description is accurate in every way. The Red Barn is beautifully crafted and furnished, the kitchen is equipped to handle anything I might want to cook with the bonus of quality cooking utensils and tableware. The bed is comfortable with plush linens and the bathroom is spa-like. The enclosed garden/patio is a great place for morning coffee, a good read, and early evening drinks. We enjoy the nearby hiking trails in the Pygmy Forrest as well as the quick drive to the coast for walks on the headlands, good restaurants, live music, fine art galleries and the Mendocino Art Center. Gabi and Richard are wonderful hosts--warm, helpful and available but never intrusive. We highly recommend the Red Barn Retreat and look forward to returning many more times.

Perfect retreat

  • 4 of 5

Gabi and Richard are excellent hosts. The home was spacious, well equipped, and the location was great for hiking and heading to the coast. This was a perfect retreat for our family of four. The experience was 5 stars. Two points of feedback: I wish we could have streamed video (consider for next time!) as that's all we use these days, and I wish VRBO didn't hide the additional people fees - it's more expensive than initially advertised.

A great respite/retreat for a couple --- quiet, relaxing and well maintained. The location is excellent for exploring the coast from Little River up to Fort Bragg. Property is well equipped for meal preparation.

Heavenly hideaway

  • 5 of 5

The Red Barn Retreat was a wonderful relaxing quiet getaway for our anniversary. The cottage is lovely, spotlessly clean and had all of the amenities that we needed. Gabi and Richard are exceptional hosts and thought of everything to make our stay memorable. We especially loved our own private fenced yard off of the bedroom . We can't wait to stay here on our next visit to the Mendocino area. Thank you so much for sharing your home.

Beautiful property and wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Red Barn retreat. Very comfortable, really nice interior and décor. Everything you need to prepare meals. We liked the 3 miles back from Hwy 1. Very quiet and relaxing. Just a short drive to Mendocino which is wonderful. I highly recommend.

We loved this place...

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I took our 6 year-old daughter for our first trip up to Mendocino Coast. It was spectacular in every way. Magical place, fantastic for kids, as there's so much incredible nature (coast and redwoods) to explore and marvel at. The Red Barn was perfect for us. Gabi and Richard are wonderful hosts and people, warm and friendly. The house was beautiful for us, very quiet, very nicely done, spacious, full of light. And best of all, the yard and patio where we had great breakfasts every morning. It's tucked back up the hill in the woods and it feels like you're really away. Very close and convenient to all coastal activities: Little River, Mendo, Fort Bragg (great pizza and ice cream places for kids). We would definitely come back and stay here. Highly recommended for families. couples or even a personal retreat--it's really peaceful.
