About Jim Martin

We had been coming to South Kona for 15 years when we acquired the property early in 2013. We have been residents for three years, now.

Jim is a retired theatre artist/social worker/educator/student, and Terry owns his own business in international shipping. Jim stays more or less permanently in South Kona, while Terry is still working. He comes and goes regularly.

We have a 6-year old dog, Kona. She came over from LA over two years ago, and she is now a local girl.

Jim Martin purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Jim Martin chose Captain Cook

We fell in love with South Kona and the expansive views of the coast and the sea - as well as the myriad of activities the area presents. We bought a lot very close to the house and cottage and are considering expanding the orchard. We are not only the happy owners of a beautiful Hawaiian home, but we are mango farmers, tending a 30-tree mango orchard on our property.

What makes this cottage unique

We are in an ideal location for R&R after a day of Big Island activities - whatever your pleasure, be it snorkeling or diving in Kealakekua or Honaunau Bay, cycling, hiking, sight-seeing, coffee tasting or just experiencing Aloha! The area is very quiet and we have lovely neighbors. We are two drives down from Napo'opo'o Road so road noise is non-existent. We are surrounded by birds and lush vegetation. Kona polices the property, and keeps the wild chickens and turkeys away - usually. They can be brazen.

a little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough good things for pineapple cottage. It was neat clean and thoughtfully appointed. It even included things to go to the beach! I loved every minute of the stay and plan on returning as soon as I can. Jim is a thoughtful host , and even tho he was away, he was in contact and making sure all was good for us. Thank you so much Jim for letting us enjoy your beautiful home. I would give it a 5 star rating for sure.

Cozy, clean, private and safe

  • 5 of 5

Really clean, studio cottage with private entrance. Close to town, restaurants, shops beach, one bed with nice spacious bathroom. The owner lives next door, he was very courteous and informative, it was good chatting with him a bit. Beautiful dog on premises, really friendly. The cottage has a small picnic table outside, has a grill you can use and some beach equipment for you as well. Overall the place was very comfortable, pretty steep driveway to get down to it but nothing outrageous. Calm neighborhood, very quite and nice and cool weather. It was perfect for our stay!

Good location, clean and quiet

  • 4 of 5

Thank goodness we took a good look at the instructions to get to the property! We arrived on the Big Island early in the day and spent our time driving up to the north end of the island. We stopped in Kailua-Kona for some groceries before starting for the Pineapple Cottage. As we headed back south we thought it might be a good idea to go to our accommodations before we got dinner and in the dark, and we're glad we did. The instructions are perfect and you really have to watch for the landmarks. The driveway is steep and narrow, but it is paved and not hard to navigate. Once we got to the property, Jim and Kona came out to greet us and Jim let us know that he would be home during our stay, so he would be available if we needed anything. After a short conversation, we unloaded our bags and headed for dinner to a local place that Jim recommended.

Back at the Pineapple Cottage, we discovered a clean studio with a comfortable bed. There was Kona coffee for our morning java fix and a small refrigerator, microwave, toaster oven and grill. We didn't do any "real" cooking during our stay, but there was some cookware available.

We were on a 2 week holiday, so had one vary large bag that didn't fit conveniently anywhere. There was room for the smaller bag. There was a cabinet that we could have unpacked some items into, but it would not have held everything from the large bag. We did manage to squeeze the big bag in next to the bed, but it made getting into the bed from that side difficult. Really, just an inconvenience.

We spoke with Jim about snorkeling, and he made a recommendation that we took. We are so glad that we did! We had the bay almost to ourselves, and the parking and waters were filling up as we left. We unfortunately left the water before the dolphins arrived and we were not inclined to go back in as we didn't want it to appear as though we were harassing them. When we returned to the cottage the outdoor shower was a great way to rinse the salt off our gear and clean up after our snorkel.

We sat at the patio table in the morning with our coffee and breakfast and watched the geckos and birds in the garden. There were very few bugs outside and none inside. Our one wish was that we might have the view of the ocean that the patio of the main house seemed to have.

Jim was an excellent host, available but not intrusive. Mahalo Jim for sharing your cottage with us!

We are a short drive from beautiful Kealakekua Bay which has world class snorkeling, diving and paddling. Also nearby is Honaunau Bay, which also is a snorkel/dive/paddle mecca. Both Bays abound with dolphin and sea turtles as well as other beautiful marine life. Also located on Honaunau Bay is The City of Refuge (Pu'uhonua O Honaunau) National Historical Park - a link to the past of our Hawaii. Coffee and macadamia farms and mills abound in the area - as well as honey processing operations. There are hiking trails and tour operators who can arrange kayaking in the bays, snorkeling and diving. The views are stunning, and the area is rich in Hawaiian history. We are in nature, so we are surrounded by birds, exotic fruit trees and a bevy of flora.
