About Janet Murphy

This is a family beach home and true to that title it is a family effort to continue to own it. My two brothers and I grew up in the Mt. Tabor area of Portland and attended Franklin High School. We all still reside in the area and each of us loves the beach. We still refer to it as Twin Rocks, even though it has been incorporated into Rockaway Beach. We visit as often as possible and now our children and their children also use the house as a place to get away.

Janet Murphy purchased this house in 1984

Why Janet Murphy chose Rockaway Beach

When my two brothers and I were children we used to spend our summers visiting my grandparents at their beach cabin in what was then Twin Rocks. We used to play in the woods across the street. One year when we came the trees had all been cut down. Little did I know then that the house that was to be built would one day be a place where my children would create their own beach memories. When our father purchased the house he went out on a limb financially. The first time down after the sale I stood out front with him and he said, 'This is your inheritance. There won't be anything else.' Today, this house means the world to me and to each of our families. Through the years it has become a way to connect with family and friends. It is our sincerest hope that our renters will also be able to create lasting memories for their family.

What makes this house unique

You only need to walk in the front door and look out the window once to realize why we love this house. The view is unequal. It's like a movie set. The house sitting steps away from the beach. Being able to sit on a deck and watch waves pounding the sand and crashing against the two giant rocks just off shore. It is truly an amazing place.

Amazing house!

  • 5 of 5

We didn't know that the house was split in two but it worked out so good The grandparents were on one half while children and the rest on the other half. We walked into a cute little basket filled with treats for the kids and a bottle of wine for us adults. The house was well stocked with kids toys and little cots for them to sleep on. Very cute and clean and the walk to the beach is easy for the older people to get through. We plan on making this house our new family tradition!

Lovely place to spend Christmas!

  • 4 of 5

We rented both sides of the Day Break duplex. It was great for our family. The views are fabulous, especially from two of the upstairs bedrooms. I was a bit disappointed that the basement room was not really usable. There is a futon down there, but it was pretty cold and damp. I had hoped a couple of the older grands could sleep there( and perhaps in the summer it would be fine), but not in December. We adjusted and the kids were happy to sleep on bedroom floors. The living areas were pretty small, but we did all gather on the larger side to open gifts. Janet was very hospitable and the house was nice and clean. There was even a basket of treats which were enjoyed by all!

Owner's Response: Daybreak has six bedrooms, and a couch that makes into a bed, so we’ve never used the basement for sleeping. We also provide two child pack and plays, and a child size cot.

Very nice, large home ON the beach

  • 5 of 5

This home has a very large deck overlooking the beach. The inside of the home is very clean. With two living room areas and kitchens; the home was recently remodeled and very nicely done. Not an open concept floor plan, but this allows numerous bedrooms and living areas. The family is looking forward to renting this wonderful home next year.

Great location, breathtaking views, fun for the whole family, and had everything we needed.

  • 4 of 5

We had four families (12 people of all ages) come together to spend quality time for four days at Day Break. We had the best vacation ever! There was enough bedrooms, bathrooms, and space for each person. The deck was Hugh, the views are extraordinary, and the walk to the beach is just a few steps from the front door.

The home is charming, not fancy, but comfy. Janet was so amazing and dependable, I was nervous booking so far from home and she made it so easy. When we arrived I heard there was a basket of snacks, but the kids ate them before I got to see, so I am guessing they were great.

Every one was sad to leave and they are already talking about next time.

Thanks Day Break for all the memories!

Wonderful spot for families

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great time here. There were so many nice touches---including a sweet welcome basket---from our hosts that made us feel right at home. We loved the immediate access to such a quiet beach and wonderful views of Twin Rocks. We'd recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a great ocean access and space for a group.

This was perfect for our needs! We rented both sides of the house and used the large deck as our common area. The location was steps away from the beach which was great for our older kids. We would definitely stay here again.
