About the property

2 bedroom fully equipped house on 1.5 acres of beachfront garden.

Poirier Cove has everything you need for a family vacation, a romantic getaway or fun with friends.

The private, 180 degree view beach is perfect for picnicking, watching wildlife visitors in the bay, swimming out to the bird rock, or setting off for a paddle. You can scramble up the rock to watch the sunset - or the sunrise. There are two expansive lawns for the kids to play on - badminton, croquet or soccer. There's a firepit for roasting hot dogs or marshmallows - or keeping warm when the sun sets.

And then there's the view, which always seems to be changing. Away in the distance, over the Juan de Fuca straits, you can see the snow-capped mountains of Olympic national park. You can spend a day quite happily with a pair of binoculars watching birds squabble over their place on the rock in the middle of the bay, spotting bald eagles and ospreys, or waiting for the seal family to visit - perhaps even a passing whale. Or you can set off to explore the wild west coast of Vancouver Island.

Inside the kitchen, sitting room and dining room all look out over the ocean. The kitchen has everything you need if you choose to eat in. The dining table seats 6, and the comfortable living room has a fireplace. You'll find a woodpile next to the garage. We've left plenty of board games and books for evenings around the fire, but there's also wifi and TV with blueray player if you prefer.

The master bedroom has a queen bed, the other has twin beds. There's a good quality hideaway bed for a fifth person if required.

Poirier Cove is a short drive from Sooke's shops and restaurants; miles of sandy beaches; west coast rain forest - or 45 minutes to downtown Victoria. The ideal place for a vacation!

About Corinne and Raouf Saad

We're a family of 5 - the kids range from 20 to 12. Raouf comes from Egypt - Corinne from the UK. We've made Canada our home for the last 20 years - Edmonton, Alberta to be precise. One of our favourite holiday destinations has always been the west coast of Vancouver Island... camping when the kids were small, then renting holiday homes. There's lots to do, and it is incredibly beautiful.

Corinne and Raouf Saad purchased this house in 2014

Why Corinne and Raouf Saad chose Vancouver Island

This spring we found Poirier Cove for sale - quite by chance - and fell in love with the place. It's unusual for the area in that it's right on the beach with plenty of open lawns around it. The view is stunning. We jumped at the opportunity to buy the perfect house in the perfect location.

Relaxing, fantastic View, warm fireplace, close to all conveniences

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this older home for a couple of days to relax and enjoy the scenery. Our expectations were fully met. The owners communicated very well throughout the process, making us feel welcome. The home is completely furnished with everything you will need except your groceries of course. Even firewood was provided to ensure a warm and cozy stay. Kick back and watch the boats go by in the Straits of Juan de Fuca. The home is situated only yards from the beach and has a large fully furnished living room with a wall of windows looking directly south. We saw a otter, seal and herons as well as many other birds. Very nice. We will be back for sure!

Clean and comfortable home with a beautiful view of the Juan de Fuca Strait

  • 5 of 5

The home has a wall of windows facing the strait with comfortable furniture to sit in while enjoying the wild life in the little bay. We saw otters and seals playing and feeding as well as a number of shore birds.

The Saad family have put together a binder with all the pertinent information for their home. There was also information on what is available in the town of Sooke such as grocery shopping, the cafe's and nearby parks. We enjoyed coffee and the "Vienna Bakery" and also the "Serious Coffee" bar in Sooke. The beaches and trails in the parks further west are great for hiking and the parks are examples of the coastal rain forests. There are books in the home on the trails and hikes in the area. Consult these before heading out for difficulty. Good foot wear is advisable as the trails can be muddy.

Corrine made sure we had what we needed when we arrived. She made sure we knew where the emergency candles and where the wood was when a storm blew through the area. Very attentive hosts even though they are far away. Thank you for letting us stay in your home. We hope to be back in the future.

Peaceful and beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Sooke! We could have sat around on the deck, next to the giant windows, or in the breakfast nook staring at the amazing views all day! The house was beautiful, clean, and comfortable. Corrine was really great to work with, she answered any questions we had quickly and had some great recommendations. We brought kayaks with us and launched right from the beach in front of the house. The stores in Sooke were close and had anything we needed.

I would love to come back!

View cannot be beat!

  • 5 of 5

Such a special place to spend time with family. Loved being on the water and the view of the Strat of Juan de Fuca and Olympic Mtns. Appreciated it being outside of town but just a short trip in to Sooke for provisions, etc.

Thank you for sharing your home!

Magical place on the beach with 180 degree views of the Juan de Fuca Straits

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 (kids ages 4 and 7) stayed at the Saad's place for a week. This place (and our trip) has exceeded all of our expectations. The piece of property is amazing, inclusive of it's own beach and 180 degree views of the Juan de Fuca Straits. We saw orcas (on 3 separate ocassions), sea otters, seals, bald eagles and countless other birds from the back yard.

The house has a large living room with wall to wall windows to enjoy the view. The kitchen has all the essentials you need to cook in (because honestly, there is no point in going out to eat when you have a view like this). The barbecue works great and there was even a spare propane tank ready to go.

Our boys had an absolute blast here. Between the fort on the beach, throwing rocks into the water and playing croquet, they could literally spend hours upon hours enjoying themselves!

If you want some recommendations of activities to do, the Saads can give you some ideas (they did for us and they were all spot on).

Car: recommended

Poirier Cove is 10 mins west of Sooke, right on the beach. 15 minutes down the road is French Beach, and just beyond that beautiful China Beach and the start of the Juan de Fuca hiking trail.

If you venture 45 minutes further up the road, you'll get to Port Renfrew's Botanical Beach, and its incredible tidal pools. At low tide, there's hours of fun exploring and watching these mini salt-water worlds.

The other side of Sooke is East Sooke park with over 50 kms of trails. We like to park at the far end at Pike Point, walk through the rain forest down to the beach and then along the top of the cliffs. Or you can just park at Aylard Farm and walk 5 minutes down to a beautiful sandy beach with lots of drift wood for building a great fort.

If you'd like to bike, you can pick up the Galloping Goose trail just east of Sooke, head up for an adventure to the Sooke Potholes or for an easier ride to Matheson Lake. Either way you get a swim.

Launch your kayak on our beach, and paddle round to Sooke to get your groceries, or on into the Sooke Basin to birdwatch.

Jordan River is 25 minutes away, with the best waves for miles around for surfing.

And then there's the fishing - go out with one of the boats from Sooke, and you'll be sure to catch salmon, or, at the right time of year, halibut. You can also try your luck from the shore. Apparently Otter Point is the one place where catching salmon is possible from the rocks.

Sooke itself has several grocery stores to choose from. Our treat after a day hiking is the Little Vienna Bakery for tea and cake. Or you can also get excellent sandwiches there for your picnic. Sooke has a wide choice of restaurants; the Harbour House of course is one of Canada's finest restaurants, a special treat for dinner or more affordable for Sunday lunch. Just by the Harbour House is Whiffen Spit, which is a great place for a quick dog walk.

Downtown Victoria is 45 minutes away. The Royal BC Museum is well curated, and great for kids if it's a rainy day. The Bug Museum is a big hit too. It's also fun to stroll around the harbour, watching the boats and the street performers and artists. There are plenty of whale watching tours setting out from the harbour too, and you're guaranteed to see whales.

Victoria has Canada's oldest Chinatown, with good restaurants and little alleys to explore.

The Butchart Gardens are about an hour away from Poirier Cove, but well worth a visit. We were always put off by the price, but then decided they were definitely worth it.

This part of Vancouver Island definitely has something for everyone - you can be as active or as lazy as you want. You can eat fantastic food out, or hot dogs over the fire pit on the beach. You can race up hills on a mountain bike, or stroll along the cliffs and beaches watching wildlife. You can paddle quietly with seals or zoom out to the ocean on a kodiak. Or you can just walk out of your door and down on to the beach for the day. Whatever you choose, you'll love it.
