Overview

About the property

2 bedroom fully equipped house on 1.5 acres of beachfront garden.

Poirier Cove has everything you need for a family vacation, a romantic getaway or fun with friends.

The private, 180 degree view beach is perfect for picnicking, watching wildlife visitors in the bay, swimming out to the bird rock, or setting off for a paddle. You can scramble up the rock to watch the sunset - or the sunrise. There are two expansive lawns for the kids to play on - badminton, croquet or soccer. There's a firepit for roasting hot dogs or marshmallows - or keeping warm when the sun sets.

And then there's the view, which always seems to be changing. Away in the distance, over the Juan de Fuca straits, you can see the snow-capped mountains of Olympic national park. You can spend a day quite happily with a pair of binoculars watching birds squabble over their place on the rock in the middle of the bay, spotting bald eagles and ospreys, or waiting for the seal family to visit - perhaps even a passing whale. Or you can set off to explore the wild west coast of Vancouver Island.

Inside the kitchen, sitting room and dining room all look out over the ocean. The kitchen has everything you need if you choose to eat in. The dining table seats 6, and the comfortable living room has a fireplace. You'll find a woodpile next to the garage. We've left plenty of board games and books for evenings around the fire, but there's also wifi and TV with blueray player if you prefer.

The master bedroom has a queen bed, the other has twin beds. There's a good quality hideaway bed for a fifth person if required.

Poirier Cove is a short drive from Sooke's shops and restaurants; miles of sandy beaches; west coast rain forest - or 45 minutes to downtown Victoria. The ideal place for a vacation!

About Corinne and Raouf Saad

We're a family of 5 - the kids range from 20 to 12. Raouf comes from Egypt - Corinne from the UK. We've made Canada our home for the last 20 years - Edmonton, Alberta to be precise. One of our favourite holiday destinations has always been the west coast of Vancouver Island... camping when the kids were small, then renting holiday homes. There's lots to do, and it is incredibly beautiful.

Corinne and Raouf Saad purchased this house in 2014

Why Corinne and Raouf Saad chose Sooke

This spring we found Poirier Cove for sale - quite by chance - and fell in love with the place. It's unusual for the area in that it's right on the beach with plenty of open lawns around it. The view is stunning. We jumped at the opportunity to buy the perfect house in the perfect location.

Poirier Cove is 10 mins west of Sooke, right on the beach. 15 minutes down the road is French Beach, and just beyond that beautiful China Beach and the start of the Juan de Fuca hiking trail.

If you venture 45 minutes further up the road, you'll get to Port Renfrew's Botanical Beach, and its incredible tidal pools. At low tide, there's hours of fun exploring and watching these mini salt-water worlds.

The other side of Sooke is East Sooke park with over 50 kms of trails. We like to park at the far end at Pike Point, walk through the rain forest down to the beach and then along the top of the cliffs. Or you can just park at Aylard Farm and walk 5 minutes down to a beautiful sandy beach with lots of drift wood for building a great fort.

If you'd like to bike, you can pick up the Galloping Goose trail just east of Sooke, head up for an adventure to the Sooke Potholes or for an easier ride to Matheson Lake. Either way you get a swim.

Launch your kayak on our beach, and paddle round to Sooke to get your groceries, or on into the Sooke Basin to birdwatch.

Jordan River is 25 minutes away, with the best waves for miles around for surfing.

And then there's the fishing - go out with one of the boats from Sooke, and you'll be sure to catch salmon, or, at the right time of year, halibut. You can also try your luck from the shore. Apparently Otter Point is the one place where catching salmon is possible from the rocks.

Sooke itself has several grocery stores to choose from. Our treat after a day hiking is the Little Vienna Bakery for tea and cake. Or you can also get excellent sandwiches there for your picnic. Sooke has a wide choice of restaurants; the Harbour House of course is one of Canada's finest restaurants, a special treat for dinner or more affordable for Sunday lunch. Just by the Harbour House is Whiffen Spit, which is a great place for a quick dog walk.

Downtown Victoria is 45 minutes away. The Royal BC Museum is well curated, and great for kids if it's a rainy day. The Bug Museum is a big hit too. It's also fun to stroll around the harbour, watching the boats and the street performers and artists. There are plenty of whale watching tours setting out from the harbour too, and you're guaranteed to see whales.

Victoria has Canada's oldest Chinatown, with good restaurants and little alleys to explore.

The Butchart Gardens are about an hour away from Poirier Cove, but well worth a visit. We were always put off by the price, but then decided they were definitely worth it.

This part of Vancouver Island definitely has something for everyone - you can be as active or as lazy as you want. You can eat fantastic food out, or hot dogs over the fire pit on the beach. You can race up hills on a mountain bike, or stroll along the cliffs and beaches watching wildlife. You can paddle quietly with seals or zoom out to the ocean on a kodiak. Or you can just walk out of your door and down on to the beach for the day. Whatever you choose, you'll love it.

Beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying here and wish we could have been here longer. There was plenty of room for three of us. It rained most of the time so that could have made us stir crazy, but we could spread out. We used the fireplace a couple of times (they provide lots of firewood). The kitchen amenities are plentiful, and included a slow cooker (bonus for winter chili). Corinne called us upon arrival to make sure everything was good. On our check out day, there wasn't anyone coming in so she let us stay a bit longer, which was lovely since it was raining when we were packing up. We were able to do a couple of loads of laundry which helped with our packing (coming from the US we only wanted to bring one suitcase).

Highly recommend staying here!

A perfect beachfront tranquil retreat

  • 5 of 5

Corrine was incredibly helpful. The property was very well equipped and very comfortable for our party of four. Loved the BBQ and firepit area. The grounds are private and peaceful and the views are amazing. Would love to come again.

Amazing Stay!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 2 nights and its one of the best VRBO locations. The property is right next to water and completely Private. The view from Living room, small Nook and kitchen is Awesome. There is sufficient space for everyone and the right amount of Furniture. The beach here has amazing color stones and kids collected a lot of them. There were couple of Sea Otters so close the to shore.

Corinne was extremely helpful. Since we were booking this place in a very short notice, by the time we checked in there was an issue with the payment. She was very sensitive to not disturb us the day we checked in and sort it out the next day. Thanks so much for the wonderful stay Corinne.

perfect

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 6 weeks in Jan/ feb and could not have picked a better place to stay. From the first day until the last we felt at home. The area has plenty to do and see. We especially enjoyed the potholes. The Kemp Lake music Cafe is well worth a visit or two.

The owners where easy to contact and kept in touch to be sure everything was ok. The house was perfect and even when we had a snow day we were never bored. The view out the windows is fantastic. Thanks for your hospitality.

Christmas Vacation

  • 4 of 5

We loved our Christmas stay at this amazing house on the ocean. I even borrowed the Christmas stockings to surprise my boys who weren't sure if Santa could find us. We hiked nearby trails on the sunny days, visited Buchart Gardens to see the holiday lights, and spent one entire rainy day looking out the window at 7 otters that played in the ocean out front and on the lawn. Two bald eagles were circling overhead most of the day, and two orca whales swam in the distance. It is an amazing nature retreat. There's so much to do on the property and nearby. Also, the owner was great about calling before we arrived to answer any questions and responsive if we had questions during our stay. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it would have been great to have a second working television for the kids. They spent their time playing pool and jumping on the trampoline, so it all worked out.
