High quality construction throughout, and loads of windows with stunning ocean views and of the West Maui Mountains.
Private, clean, modern, comfortable and affordable. The central location is perfect for active people who want to tour all around Maui while staying in a real home. If you’re the type who likes to avoid resorts and find adventure, this is a great option for home-base.
Configuration & Privacy
This is an attached 1BR cottage-style unit, with the living area primarily on the second-floor. Very private, and distinctly stand-alone from the rest of the building.
This home is in the Kokomo area of Haiku – which is very central to the whole island. I show a Google map below with the pin on Giggle Hill – this home is approximately a half mile south of Goggle Hill. This location is within easy reach of all of Maui. Wonderful North Shore beaches and Paia Town a 10-15 minute drive.
I choose to live on this side of the island – it is cooler, less commercial/touristy, and very central for active folks who plan on touring all around the island.
You’re also closer to Haleakala, Road to Hana and Upcountry than the resort areas, while the resort areas are still easily within reach for day trips (an easy and very scenic ~35-45 minutes to Kihei and South Maui, about an hour to Lahaina and West Maui.)
Haiku is wetter and greener than the resort areas which are in the desert. Most of our rain comes from the tradewind cycle, so it will usually (and conveniently) come late afternoon or overnight.
While most of this area has become an eclectic mix of country-residential, the majority of Haiku is agriculturally zoned as a legacy of the plantation days. There are some small family and hobby farms out here. Most visitors enjoy the sights and sounds of a more rural and rustic lifestyle – largely without any of the irritations that some aspects of country living come with. That said, irritations are relative, and you should be a nature lover if you plan on staying outside of the tourist centers – you’ll certainly cross paths with little critters – geckos, toads and giant snails are common – and you’ll hear the sounds of coqui frogs and roosters (both at a comfortable distance.)
Nightly rates are for two guests; each additional adult up to 4 guests max will be charged $25/nt.
One child 12 years or younger is free, and if two children total there will be an additional charge of $25/nt.
The house was the perfect escape to another side of Maui. My husband and I wanted to discover Maui away from tourists and this house in Haiku was breathtaking. Everything from the carpentry (done by the owner) to the views was nothing less than wonderful. We had a great time.
While getting to the guest accommodation took us on unfamiliar roads we were instantly pleased and at ease when we arrived at the lodging. The interior and the exterior surroundings were very pleasing.
We had just spent several days in a Lahaina resort and were on our way to a nighttime visit to Haleakala NP. One warning - visitors, have a GPS available. We were returning at night from Paia when we were forced by barricades to take tiny unlit local roads. Our GPS enabled us to make our way back to our quarters and recall our unplanned adventure.
We loved this property in every aspect. The pictures are telling the story and it is a gem. If you want to get away from it all and recharge this is the place for you. You are also close to everything you would like to explore and then you get to return to your slice of paradise. We miss it!
Away from it all in Upcountry Maui. A wonderful retreat to come home to after a day of adventuring. A drink on the lanai. An outdoor shower in the tropical air. Gorgeous design with finished wood all around. Really superb with sunset views and rainbows. Sweet!
This property is beautiful. The inside is airy and well lit and spacious. The bed was soft and super comfortable. The view is incredible. Seriously: incredible. Farms and ocean and trees and clouds and sun. It was a magnificent change from staying in one of the crowded resorts.
One of the best things about this spot: it's in an area few tourists go near. Also, it is super convenient to the road to Hana (it's on the way to Hana past Paia) and Haleakala. If you stay somewhere else on island in addition to this cottage and want to see those things, I would recommend doing them while staying at this location vs. the resort areas.
That being said, there were a few things that kept our experience from being less than perfect. For starters, it wasn't the quiet solitude we sort of expected. Staying in the main house was a rather large family with young children, and since that house was right next to the cottage we could definitely see and hear them playing outside and going in and out of their property. Similarly, there is a farmer who comes each day to tend the crops. He is a wonderful and friendly and interesting guy, and you should definitely talk to him if you visit here. Problem is, he arrives at 7 or 7:30 in the morning, which means that you can't really privately sit out on the wonderful decks and enjoy the view or walk around in the living room/kitchen area in your underwear. He minds his own business and doesn't make a ton of noise except when he first arrives, but he is there.
A couple of other minor gripes: no dishwasher, 10 AM checkout, tiny fridge, not many supplies (for example, there is no coffee provided for guests, which would really suck if you were a coffee drinker and arrived late at night. As another example, the guests who stayed before us bought and left a hair dryer since there hadn't been one before.)
I'm being picky here. It truly is a wonderful location and provided some of our best time on the island. Just want to make sure you know what you're getting if you decide to stay.
My husband and I finally took a bit of a delayed honeymoon and wanted to stay somewhere off the beaten path and away from all of the touristy areas. This was the perfect location. It was clean and stocked with everything you could need (I was pleasantly surprised with the blender in the kitchen). The fridge is only bar-sized and the kitchen is really only equipped for snacks and small meals, but that was perfect for us (especially since there is an amazing vegan restaurant called Veg Out 5 minutes away). The views from the balcony were stunning. The pictures do not do it justice! We were very comfortable and enjoyed our stay. We hope to make it back one day =)
