Built around 1890 and in service as a one room schoolhouse until 1943, the Summit Schoolhouse is truly a special place. Located on Peachy Canyon Road in the Willow Creek AVA, a main artery connecting many Paso Robles west side wineries, you get to enjoy the peace and quiet of the country, while still being only 15 minutes away from all that downtown Paso Robles and Templeton have to offer.

Soaring 11 foot ceilings, give the cozy space a large and airy feel, which includes two bedrooms, two bathrooms, laundry, great room and gourmet kitchen. Situated on two terraced acres, the outdoor area is dotted with several walnut trees and includes a flagstone patio, handmade wine barrel dining table with seating for 8, bocce ball court, fire pit, native landscaping and Adelaida stone walls. Grilling outdoors on the Weber Genesis E-310 gas barbecue allows you to enjoy a game of bocce ball while getting dinner ready at the same time.

The schoolhouse was carefully restored, keeping all improvements period specific to maintain the integrity of the 110+ year-old structure. At the same time, we were able to add complementary upgrades such as marble and Caesarstone countertops in the kitchen and baths, Viking range and dishwasher, paneled French door refrigerator, Thelin pot belly-style stove in the living room, Sony HD 3D flatscreen TV, American Leather brand sofa bed (no springs...this one is so comfortable!), Wi-Fi, Direct TV and vintage lighting.

Restoratively, we recycled the 110+ year-old redwood that was taken from the original siding of the house to accommodate the addition, and use it to construct the kitchen island, over-range vent hood, window cornices and various cabinet doors. The original board and batten style wall construction was maintained throughout the new addition space and the original wood-trimmed screens were modified to fit the repaired windows. The original windows with hand blown glass panes and restored rope pulls remain in the main part of the house.

The expansive porch has seating for four and is perfect for coffee or a glass of wine and waving to the frequent cyclers that take advantage of the connectivity of Peachy Canyon Road from downtown to Vineyard Drive. There is also a dry-farmed hilltop vineyard that provides for a great view of the vine cycle from Spring to late November. After which, the area is buzzing with the local walnut harvest.

This vacation rental is a licensed business within San Luis Obispo County. There is no smoking allowed anywhere on the property.

Our home, the Old Summit Schoolhouse, is located on Peachy Canyon Road in the Willow Creek AVA, which is a main artery on the rural West Side connecting many of the best wineries in Paso Robles. Within a 5 to 15 minute drive of our home, you will several amazing wineries, including Villa Creek, Law, Thacher, Opolo, Denner, Jada, Shale Oak, Jack Creek, Brecon Estate, Oso Libre, Hammersky, Halter Ranch, Adelaida, Tablas Creek, Calcareous and many other vineyards just beyond. Be sure not to miss Pasolivo Olive oil for a different type of tasting experience!

From our home, downtown Paso Robles is about a 15-20 minute drive. There, you will find the city park located between 11th and 12th Streets which serves as the centerpiece to several fun shops and great restaurants. Also located around the park are many tasting rooms, if you wish to continue your exploration of Paso wine. Depending on your taste, we are happy to provide dining suggestions.

Just down the way on 13th Street is the Paso Robles Children's Museum, which is housed in the old volunteer firehouse. Complete with the original pole and vintage rig, there are lots of educational and playthings for your little ones to enjoy. The museum includes a physical science center, grape stomp, toddler farm, theater area, market, air ball room and creation station, to name a few. Check out their site at www.pasokids.org for hours, admission and special events calendar.

Easy dining options if you have little ones: Odyssey World Café, Papi's, Berry Hill Bistro, Fish Gaucho, Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse and Taproom Restaurant at Firestone Brewery. If the kids are good, reward them with a visit to Powell's vintage candy shop!

The nearest retail is also about a 15-minute drive where you will find Trader Joes, Pier 46 Seafood, J&R Meats (lots of great items for the grill), Target, OSH, Pier 1 Imports, Michaels and various other stores. A bit further into town, you will find an Albertsons, Kohls, Walmart and Smart & Final. The towns of Atascadero and Templeton are about a 20-minute drive from the house and offer additional retail outlets, shops and restaurants.

If you wish to explore the coast for a day, our home is located exactly 30 minutes from the intersection of 46 West and Hwy 1. From here you can head North to Cambria, Moonstone Beach, San Simeon (Hearst Castle) and Big Sur. Heading South will take you to Cayucos, Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, Avila Beach and Pismo Beach. Our family has enjoyed over 30 years of vacationing up and down the Central Coast and have many fond memories in each of these quaint towns. If you choose to stay with us, please don't hesitate to ask for suggestions on where to eat, shop and play on this very scenic route!

About the owner: My husband and I have been married for 15 years and along with our two children, reside in Orange County, California. Growing up, I vacationed on the Central Coast with my parents and grandparents and have continued the tradition with my husband, our college friends and now our kids. Through all of our various phases of life, we have enjoyed many special times with family and friends from San Luis Obispo to San Simeon. The Central Coast, and specifically Paso Robles and our little schoolhouse, hold a special place in our heart.

Why the Owner Chose Paso Robles, CA, USA:
We love this property because of its historic charm and amazing location. Our family has vacationed on and enjoyed the Central Coast for over 30 years and feel so fortunate to now have a place to call our own. Initially we had focused our search in and around downtown Paso Robles thinking we could never afford or be able to maintain the larger acreage properties out on the rural west side. So, when the opportunity to purchase the one-acre schoolhouse and the one-acre parcel behind it, we jumped. With the help of many friends, family and local network of business contacts, we completed the renovation/restoration a year later in August 2014. Our family loves the location on the West Side because of its central location to many wineries, downtown Paso Robles and the coast. All of our personal favorite wineries are located no more than 15 minutes from our home and we continue to discover more favorites as the industry expands. The home and its outdoor space offer such a relaxing respite from our busy work and school routine. Even if we only spend a weekend, we leave refreshed and ready to face the week ahead. Being that we can't spend as much time in Paso Robles as we would like is what spurred our decision to share this truly special place with others.
