About Susan & Garry Russell. Also see us at

We got tired of the Las Vegas scene after 30 years and started taking scuba trips to places all over the world. We discovered that the Big Island, Hawaii had everything we could possibly want in a place to live and to enjoy the ocean. Some of our favorite places to get in the water are right down the street or not too far away. Living in Papa Bay has given us all the privacy we could ever want. Everyone in this location has at least 3 acres of beautiful Hawaiian landscape.

Why Susan & Garry Russell. Also see us at chose Kona Coast

When we have guests, they have all the privacy that we enjoy living here. If our guests are divers or just want to snorkel, I can meet with them in the mornings and take off for different places to explore the ocean. The Volcano National Park is only 63 miles away and one can see how different the landscape is as you travel in any direction. This truly is one of the great areas to visit, away from the usual tourist situations. It's the real Hawaii.

What makes this house unique

We are unique in that we take the time to show you the beautiful water at our area of the Big Island. If you are a scuba diver we know the best places for shore diving. Not only are our tours free, we also supply air and weights at no charge. If you just want to snorkel, we will take you out to many of the same places on snorkel tours. Maybe you would want to come back as a scuba diver!

We loved our stay at Sugar Cottage. The property is beautiful and secluded. The cottage is clean, bright and cozy and the kitchen is stocked with everything you would need to cook your meals. Garry is a total gem. He took us for 4 scuba dives at the most beautiful spots. He is so knowledgeable and kind and made everything so easy for us. Scuba divers of any level would be completely comfortable going out with him. We highly recommend Sugar Cottage! My boyfriend has stayed here twice now he loved it so much!

Simple accommodations but spectacular scuba diving. Great Value

  • 5 of 5

We loved our experience at the cottage. The cottage is simple but we didn't book it so much for the accommodations, we booked it to spend time with Garry. We are fairly new to diving and have never been the Big Island. Garry's insight and knowledge were priceless. He made sure we felt comfortable in the water even with our lack of experience. We went to one site called two steps which is fairly well known but we didn't feel crowded, he showed us where and how to enter and exit ( very valuable for us newbies) He also took us to another spot at the bottom of Milolii Rd where we dove through a lava tube and arch, both super cool. We would never have found this spot without him. The cottage will provide you with the basics and it's a huge plus to have a washer and dryer plus somewhere to wash and hang your gear. If you have a bad back I suggest you pick up a memory foam pad when you drive by Walmart to soften up the bed especially if you are staying for an extended period of time. We will definitely be back!

Best VBRO yet (particularly for divers)

  • 5 of 5

We were completely convinced this could not live up to our expectations. We figured the house would be a dump, or there would be a kitchen but nothing to cook with, or Garry would turn out to not be available to dive... but it was everything we hoped for and more. Garry is a capable, safe, kind dive leader, the cottage is spacious and well-equipped, it is an easy drive from both Kona and the volcanoes, and the deal is unbelievable (we almost felt like we were taking advantage, but I guess the owners set the price). The feral roosters in the neighborhood were quite noisy, but we would happily go back, no question.

Quiet place to stay and enjoy the surroundings.

  • 4 of 5

We spent 2 nights here. It's nice and quiet in the neighbourhood, besides the roosters that is. Great place to relax and enjoy the surroundings, the beautiful plants, flowers and trees. Garry took my husband scuba diving which was good and appreciated. The cottage has a large screened patio beside bedroom, a bathroom, kitchen & TV area. They have been renting out this cottage for many years now. They both greeted us when we arrived, were available, but gave us privacy.

What a great experience!

  • 5 of 5

We had the pleasure of spending about a week in the Sugar Cottage in October 2016. The cottage is owned by Garry and Susan Russell. Garry is a scuba dive master with an eclectic background that I will leave him to tell you about. His email address ought to give you a hint. He is an engaging and enthusiastic guide who will be disappointed if you don’t take him up on his offer to go out scuba diving pretty much every day. He does not charge a penny for this. At no cost he will also provided us with air and tanks, weights, and the occasional piece of extra equipment (saved one of our dives with an extra regulator in his back seat!). Really? Yes, really. I am not kidding.

Garry is fun to be around and every dive was a safe and unique adventure. He has dived the Kona region for over 14 years, and is clearly well known in the dive community. We couldn’t go anywhere without someone recognizing him and saying a friendly hello.

I almost forgot to mention the kayaks he will also loan you and help you put safely on top of your car!

The Cottage has a furnished kitchen and dining table. There is a washer and dryer that work well. There is a screened porch that is connected with double doors to the bedroom, so you can feel like you are sleeping outdoors in the jungle- just no bugs! The bed is comfortable. There is no other house visible and you really get a sense you are in the woods. If you or your partner are looking for a fancy upscale place highrise condo close to high quality shaved ice in Waikiki, go to Waikiki. You are in the country here. There are no restaurants or other facilities within any practical distance, although we found plenty of fresh local fruit for sale. Night is deliciously dark and woodsy. Other than the fruit, get your supplies at Costco before you leave civilization and snuggle into the outback!

The Sugar Cottage is perfect for sports divers who have their own equipment. Multiple great dives are just a short drive away. If you are freshly certified and looking to test your wings with an experienced guide who won’t take you too deep, you can’t do better. Bring your equipment and curiosity, and Garry will take care of the rest.

Thank you so much for such a lovely, clean place for our 3 night stay. Garry was an amazing host on our 2 morning snorkelling tours . Swimming with the dolphins was fabulous

This little hideaway set in high in the hills along the Kona coast was a great place to relax and take in many of the area sites

Many thanks for making this part of our Big Island trip so memorable
