Why Marla or Jay chose Puako
Puako (Pu-ah-ko) is the only small, quaint oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. It is located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 22 miles north of the Kona airport. The island's largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is right next door. Puako is conveniently located for enjoying all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, fine dining, shopping and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers and Ocean Sports is nearby at Kawaihae Center, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops. You are close to almost any activity you may desire, with the exception of viewing the volcano which is a 3 hour drive. Several fabulous beaches are minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding. The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. All homes in this neighborhood are on small acreage, so it is a very low density area. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 30 minutes, Kailua Kona 45 minutes, Waimea 20 minutes, Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours, Hawi and Polulu Valley 20-30 minutes. The sun shines 355 days per year and the average temperature highs are in the 80's with low's in the 60's. The ocean's edge is about 60 feet from your doorstep with crystal blue water that is 72-76 degrees year round. Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all.
What makes this Condo unique
Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort. The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako. The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!

Puako is lovely!! Condo building is much older than expected
Puako is such a wonderful location near Hapuna Bay. We are so glad we chose Puako over other locations (Waikoloa, Kailua). This condo has a beach across the street, with access path. The condo is nicely located and next door to the Puako General Store. The condo served our needs, but the posted pictures are nicer than in person, and we were surprised by the age of the building. It felt dark and aged. The lanai off the master is nice, and the master bedroom is a good size. One bathroom has a jetted tub that filled the entire room - it could fit our family of six inside! The other bathroom has a shower/bath combo, with chipped porcelain. The bedroom ceiling fans have chain riggings running down the wall, and the living room felt a bit like a motel at night. During the day, we opened the curtains and let the sun in. We did not spend much time inside the condo, and again it served our needs especially with cooking daytime meals for the beach, but we would've chosen a more modern facility if we'd known. The managers were very nice and receptive to our call about parking location and texts for towels. Lovely people!!
Puako Condominiums Suite 109
Our family has stayed in many of the Puako condos over the years. This was our first time in 109. There is a reason we keep coming back to Aloha Debbie. We had asked if they could provide a cot and there was a brand new air bed waiting for us when we arrived. There was a storm that blew off all the blinds and they came and put up curtains right away. The unit was clean and comfortable. We loved the large lanai that has a partial ocean view. The huge two person jetted tub was a lovely perk. Very small problems with condo that are easily fixed and didn't bother us.
We love that this is off the beaten path and not a touristy area. We've recommended these condos to others over the years and they've all been satisfied with their stays. Perfect condo for older or disabled people. Parking is just a few steps from the condo itself and my 84 year old mother had no problems getting to and from. The beach across the street is lovely but I would not recommend snorkeling there. My brother and I were caught in strong rip tides twice and had trouble getting back to shore. If you're adventurous, snorkeling was excellent at the and of Puako Beach Drive. It's a little hard to get in and out of the water there but doable. Waimea is a good place to go and eat. There is a craft brew place there that had fabulous food and was affordable ( can't remember the name ). Costco and Walmart in Kona were good for grocery shopping and we filled in our groceries at Foodland which is close by. There is a little general store beside the condos that was good for last minute stuff like eggs and bread, it's convenient but pricey.
You do need a rental car to get around so keep that in mind.
Mahalo for staying with us! We really appreciate your kind review. Hope to see you soon!
