This was my favorite home we've rented in the Pacific Northwest in the 20 years we’ve been coming up here.
The energy in this home was light and beautiful.
All the beautiful plants and flowers we’re such a gift. Having your morning coffee, while watching the little hummingbirds drinking up the nectar from the flowers, will definitely put a smile your face.
But what really set this home apart, were the views ... amazing from every window.
This panoramic views of sydney islands, Victoria, and the Mountains rising up from the sea, were really unique and unforgettable.
Thank you, Jeff, for your review. So glad you enjoyed your stay. You're welcome back anytime!
Up in the woods
The house is large but it is over decorated, the closets are off limits to visitors, bookcases in bedrooms make rooms smaller with little space to put the visitors belongings other than on the floor and keep as much as possible in the suitcase.
The deck is great and the view fantastic.
Also the location is great for the view but it is quite remote .
Hi Elsie. Thank you for your feedback. As it happens, we are going to take some of our art to our other home, so for the next season, the house won't be so decorated, and we'll be taking some of our books away too, which will give more space. Of course, as you know, every room has a suitcase rack and drawers, so you don't actually have to put your belongings on the floor. I know you were especially disappointed that we weren't able to accommodate your daughter's dog (as you asked several times for an exception to our no pets policy). I do apologize. We love dogs, but have had a couple of bad experiences when we've allowed pets, so only for that reason, we've felt we've had to hold the line. I know how this can create inconvenience, and you were understandably upset. Unfortunately, we just don't feel we can make an exception to this rule. In any case, I'm glad you enjoyed the view. All the best.
Shangri La on San Juan Island
We enjoyed our stay very much. The house is well built and had ample room for nine of us. The views of the water, mountains and sky are fabulous. The furnishings were comfortable and the art well displayed, interesting and thought provoking. We enjoyed being away from the noise of close neighbors and enjoyed the serenity we experienced. We enjoyed the big deck.
The owner was easy to communicate with and answered all inquiries promptly.
I highly recommend this property!
Note: The owners have a lot of art in the home, so renters need be respectful of it.
We had a wonderful time at Samadhi Hiuse and spent a lot of time enjoying the amazing views from the deck and watching the hummingbirds. Beds were comfortable and we had plenty of sleeping space for 12. Very close to Lime Kiln Park as well as San Juan County Park. Had a great selection of games and easy to hook up a phone to the sound system for music. Kitchen had everything we needed - even an Instant Pot! Owner was very responsive to our questions and answered quickly.
Thank you, K! Delighted you enjoyed your stay; we love to share our little piece of island paradise, and you were the perfect guest, BTW! :-)
The VRBO web pics are not up to date. Very Disappointing House for such Beautiful Views.
We arrived and before we carried in our things, we had to sweep the floors, wipe down the countertops, the table & seats of the table chairs. Three of our guests had hairs on their sheets, and one guests sheets looked very dirty....to the point that HE slept in his clothes to avoid contact with the bedding. There was also no coffee pot, and there were dirty socks on the porch. You cannot unpack due to full drawers & either full or locked closets. When you pay that kind of money for a home, you at least expect it to be clean. We reached out to the home owner about the house being dirty & he was unable to get anyone there to clean. The ONLY accurate thing about this home are the beautiful views, they are probably some of the best on the island, I will give them that. The photos on VRBO's booking website are not current photos of the home. The home is decorated in a VERY personal way. There are many many artifacts throughout the home from the owners travels, and some of them are very sexual in nature, and very inappropriate for a family of any ages. If the current photos of the home had been on the booking website, we would of never booked this home just on that basis. The bunk room can't be accessed from the main part of the house, it is accessible only by going out the back door & down the stairs of the deck & then it is located underneath the house. We had to put our 19&21 year old daughter out there, and then if you want them to be able to get back in the house during the night you can't lock the doors, so the security of the home is lacking. There is one of the bedrooms that has a wall of books, and there are alot of them that are VERY sexual in nature, so moving our girls to that room was inappropriate. We had been planning our vacation for months and just wanted to enjoy our trip to the San Juan islands with our family. We had to move to another house to be able to do this as we did not even feel comfortable cooking in this house. This was at our own expense, and the owner was only willing to refund us one of our 7 nights. We are NOT difficult people, just expect to arrive to a clean house, have a coffee maker & especially expect to know what we are getting based on the pictures that sold the house to us. We would of NEVER booked this house if the pictures had shown even some what accurate depictions of the house. There is also construction going on at the house site as well that we weren't aware of.
Unfortunately, this guest had personal reasons for wanting out of the rental agreement on the very day of their arrival that had nothing to do with issues that would affect other renters. When we stuck to the terms of the rental agreement, she threatened to give a terrible review if we would not give her a refund. Her review is the result, and that is why it is so different from all the other reviews. It is not written in a spirit of honesty and is far from an accurate portrayal of our home and what guests can expect. Still, I'd like to address a few of the points she raises that might be of interest to other guests.
Yes, it's our home and it has art we have collected from around the world. Many guests tell us they love the art (no other guest has complained about it), and it does lend character and interest to the home. Samadhi house is definitely not a typical, vanilla rental, and we do not intend it to be one. It is a uniquely beautiful retreat full of character and interest, and we do not apologize for that.
It does have locked closets, but plenty of drawer space (large drawers build into the bed in the blue bedroom, a luggage rack in the master and tan bedroom, and drawer space built into each of the 5 beds in the 4th bedroom).
Regarding the Sexology books, if you have ever seen "Meet the Fockers," well, we are the Fockers. :-) I have taught meditation for almost five decades, and my wife has a PhD in sexology with an emphasis on hormones and human relationships. There are indeed 2 shelves of text books in the blue bedroom that deal with the historical, physical, psychological, and sociological aspects of human sexuality. If you are offended by the workings of your body, best leave those books on the shelves. If you are interested, feel free to read the ample library that ranges from spirituality to meditation to novels to poetry, and the complete Harvard Classics.
We do not allow children for a couple of reasons, mostly because some of the art and collectibles are breakable and irreplaceable, but also that we are sensitive to the fact that some families might not teach their children about human reproduction. (I hope it goes without saying that there is no porn in the house.)
As far as cleanliness...all of what is stated in this review is grossly misleading. Please look to the other reviews. We have an amazing house keeper. Our home is a slice of heaven and serene beyond anything we have ever experienced in any VRBO stay of our own.
We do mention in the description that the lowest level of the home must be accessed by going outside and down the deck stairs. This is not a security threat, however. We leave our home unlocked when we travel and even leave the keys in our car. There is literally no crime in our private community. It's safe and it's pure peace.
There is no construction going on. We have updated a platform that is away from the house, which doesn't yet have a railing on it, so I put safety tape around it to warn people to stay off of it until it's done. There is no construction happening while you are at the house; I'm doing the work myself when it's not rented and I am staying here.
Finally, if you are offended by images of Buddha, you're probably better off renting elsewhere. Before booking please do read the description and look at all the pictures. We are so happy to share our home with people who can appreciate and enjoy it--which as you can see from the many, many positive reviews is almost anyone.
Located right above Lime Kiln State Park, the most prominent Orca watching point in the Pacific NW.
About Ajayan Borys
We love to travel, write, meditate, be out in nature and connect with others. We hope our home allows for all of those activities for you. Samadhi House contains many of the artifacts of our life of travel and study, including indigenous art from Asia, India, Africa, Peru, and North America. We share it with the hopes that you will find the same peace here that we find.

Why Ajayan Borys chose Friday Harbor
We fell in love with San Juan Island many years ago and have been coming up here to write for 7 or more years. We have looked and looked for our house. When we saw this one we knew we were home.
What makes this House unique
Samadhi House allows for complete peace. We love the view from the master bedroom, the view from the chaise lounge in the living room (with a good book of course and binoculars near by), the view from the downstairs great room and the feeling of the whole house.
