Julian

Historic Julian was founded in 1870. After the American Civil War, in 1869, A.E. 'Fred' Coleman, a former slave, was crossing over what is now known as Coleman Creek, just west of Julian. Seeing a glint of gold in the stream bed, he climbed down from his horse to investigate. Having had previous experience in the gold fields, he retrieved his frying pan and began panning the sands of the creek. He established the Coleman Mining District and was its recorder and also began the mining camp called Emily City later renamed Coleman City. Learning of the find, others rushed to the district and tried to trace the gold to its source. On February 22, 1870, the first 'lode', or hard rock, mining claim was filed in the Julian area. Since February 22 was President George Washington's birthday, the mine was named the Washington mine. Soon hundreds of anxious men and families were rushing to Julian to stake their claims. Julian experienced a gold rush and became a tent city overnight. In April 1870, the area's first saw mill was set up and Julian began to take on a more permanent structure. Attempts to build rival mining towns at Coleman City, Branson City and Eastwood were defeated. Owners of the Cuyamaca rancho Land Grant claimed (the Cuyamaca Land Float) Julian and its mines were within the Rancho boundaries. In 1873, the courts ruled that the Rancho did not include Julian and the mines. While the miners were trying to wrestle the gold from deep within the earth, James Madison brought a wagon load of young apple trees up into the mountains. The fruit trees flourished in the clear, fresh air. Apples are still a big product in Julian, many of which are used for making the world-famous Julian apple pie.

About Kent & Toni Aden

The owners were raised in Nebraska and Texas and dreamed of bringing a little bit of the South and Midwest to California. The land was purchased in 2001 and the 5 buildings on the property were built in 2004/5. The end result was the creation of a spectacular mountain retreat to enjoy with friends and family, a place where their kids could unplug, build forts and make mud pies. The owners primary residence is in Coronado and they spend part-time on the ranch. The owner's daughter rides horses competitively throughout the nation, and the entire family enjoys the opportunity to get away, and decompress away from their normal daily routines.

Kent & Toni Aden purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Kent & Toni Aden chose Julian

The owners searched for a year to find the perfect land, and spent 5-years planning and building the ranch. Building sites were selected after camping and experiencing the site. The gated community offers additional seclusion, yet is within minutes of fine dining, shopping and wineries are nearby.

What makes this cottage unique

Escape the hectic freeways and step back in time. Hike at sunset with wild turkeys, grazing deer and golden sunlight streaming through the oak trees. Enjoy 40-acres of peace and quiet, yet be close enough to go out to dinner 5-minutes away.

Peaceful Ranch Get-Away

  • 5 of 5

Toni and Kent are great owners to work with. They provide all the details you need to truly enjoy your stay before you leave for your trip and are easy to reach if anything comes up during your trip. The cottage is spectacular for a peaceful stay with nature all around for a family of four (two daughters 5 and 3). It's cozy and appropriately decorated by having the right amount of comfortable furniture to suit your needs while leaving you enough space where you don't feel overwhelmed by stuff - as we have felt in other VRBO units. The cottage is right by the horse stable where the pony greets you every day but is still extremely quiet and away from the busy city world. We had tremendous views from the cottage of the stars on the clear nights, a pair of deer roam by, and a coyote pass by early in the morning during our stay. Our daughters could not have asked for a better way to experience nature away from the city. Would happily stay there again.

Immaculately clean and cozy

  • 5 of 5

We so enjoyed our stay at the ranch. Many thanks to Kent and Toni for sharing their property with us. The first morning we woke up and saw 2 deer grazing, a few woodpeckers, and scrub jays- just as we were sitting on the sofa looking out the window! The cabin was immaculate and had all the amenities needed for cooking, and the bed in the main bedroom was superbly comfortable. We will definitely be back, it was a great place to stay. Thanks again!

We are return visitors and loved it as much this time. The place is super comfortable and the master bed is awesome. We missed the horses, two of them have been moved but Jack is as friendly as ever. Only negative is Julian is a zoo :-(.
