St James City on Pine Island is old Florida. No high-rises or stop lights here, but lots of things to see and do. While St James City offers passive enjoyment and relaxation, it is also a great place for interactivity and exploration. This vacation home has water access to Gulf of Mexico.

Fishing- Great fishing everywhere! Hire a guide for a few days to learn local hotspots, baits and lures, then take off on your own. One of our favorite spots is the Redfish Pass area north of Captiva Island. To the north is Cayo Costa, accessible only by boat with un-crowded white sand beaches, camping, shelling, treking and surf fishing. Some of the best fishing in the world for Trout, Snook, Redfish, Snapper, Cobia, Tarpon, King Mackerel and Grouper. Less than 1 hour by water to the Boca Grande Tarpon Tournament.

Enjoy kayaking in the sheltered local back-waters or in the Pine island Sound, Tarpon Bay in the Ding Darling Preserve, or kayak by the full moon or hit Matlacha at sunset.

Have a 'Cheeseburger in Paradise' on Cabbage key which inspired the song. Every square inch of the interior is papered with $1 bills and more than $10,000 which fall off every year is donated to charity.

Mango Mania: Pine Island is home to the Mango Mania Tropical Fruit Festival every July. The island also commercially grows guavas, longans, lychees, sapodillas, jak fruit and a variety of other rare fruits you can pick up at local fruit stands.

Dig a lost civilization: Join archeologists from the University of Florida (Go Gators!) Museum of Natural History as they excavate or do a Saturday tour of the Randall Research Center, Pineland and its Calusa Indians settlement, mound and canal system.

Visit the 'fishingest bridge in the world' in Matlacha. Tour the arts and crafts shops and catch local artists at work. This tiny Technicolor village is reminiscent of Key West in the 50's. Fresh seafood right off the boat. Several excellent restaurants.

Indiana Impressions

  • 3 of 5

Nice quiet surroundings with many fishing and kayaking opportunities. Weather was great when we were there in February. You will need a boat to maximize the canals and water activities. The biking of the island is good if you don't mind riding along side a major highway; however, the bike path is generally separated from traffic. House was very nice for two couples but some of the kitchen utensils need to be updated. Also, bring your own lawn chairs if you want to sit out in the back yard where the manatees and dolphins will visit you at times. You will share the garage with the owners boat and their car is also parked under the carport. House was a nice place to come in the evening after site seeing.

We would stay again!

  • 5 of 5

This is a nice house with a great view, comfy beds, awesome showers and a quiet location. It has a huge kitchen and updated bathrooms. We found several nice water-front restaurants on the island. Very bike and walker friendly. It was a relaxing place to come home to after a busy day out and about.

Great Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

Great solitude -- in a quiet community, one way in - one way out. Only there 30 minutes and saw four manatees. Fishing was good.

House was spacious and very clean. Everything we used worked fine. Bed in master was very comfortable. Water pressure in shower was great! Only complaint was that there was used coffee grounds with mold growing on it in the coffeemaker.

Good places to eat & drink. You don't need to leave the island -- unless you want to go to a beach.

Would definitely stay there again.

Owner's Response: Hi Randy. Thanks for the nice review. I wish you would have called or emailed me to let me know about the coffee maker. I would have sent someone right over to correct that. But it looks like you remedied the situation...thank you for being such a great guest!!

The place was clean, 3 bedrooms with 4 beds. Had an issue with the plumbing which was promptly repaired. Very comfortable & I would rent it again.

Great location and property

  • 5 of 5

We loved the location of this home. Very quiet yet bikeable to the restaurants/bars. We had our boat and it was a great location for that also. My only complaint was I wish the porch overlooking the canal was more of a screened area. The windows don't open enough for breezes to come through so it would get hot, though there was a separate air conditioner in there, which I did not realize until lend of our stay, but it would be nice at night to have a screened in area where you felt more "outside" but screened from bugs. Other than that, loved it. Would stay again.

I liked everything about this house and property.

  • 5 of 5

The house was very comfortable. I saw manatees eating in the mornings on 3-4 different days. Fished off the dock and caught snappers, grunts, jacks and catfish. Saw some sheepshead, needlefish and other fish too. You are only a few minutes from everything on the island and from the bay. It was a nice relaxing vacation.
