About Ernie & Betty Phelps

We are a happy couple with many hobbies and passions, including making jewelry. Betty is a business analyst for a financial software company. Ernie is a software consultant. We have several pets and enjoy seeing pictures of our guests with their pets on the grounds of the house.

Ernie & Betty Phelps purchased this house in 2015

Why Ernie & Betty Phelps chose Lake Chatuge

Many of our vacations have been spent in the Hiawassee area. We enjoy going to the William Holland jewelry school and exploring the many distinct towns in the area. Long term we will probably spend some or most of the year in this picturesque area.

What makes this house unique

The stone work was what we first noticed when we drove up to the property. Real stone walls, flower beds and the huge stone fire pit area in front of the cook house drew us in. Inside we were enamored of the high ceilings and Tuscan fixtures. We have added some cast iron elements and plan to accent more with it as we get more time to spend at this wonderful retreat.

A Few of My Favorite Things

  • 5 of 5

The house was so comfortable and well-stocked, I have had difficulty writing a succinct review. So I will give up on that and write as many favorites as I can. So here goes: a well stocked kitchen including an ice cream maker and fondue pot, two large comfortable leather couches placed across from each other making conversation easier, two contemporary lounge chairs placed in front of the TV for football watching ( what else?), an ultramodern laundry room also well stocked, the master ensuite with a large bathroom (two sinks), spa bath, separate shower with two shower heads, a ceiling heater, the play area outside, and one of my most favorite, the fire pit where on one very chilly evening we huddled together to make s'mores. There are so many more things I could list but you will have to find them yourself.

In Helen we visited a candy store and walked out with a pound of delicious fudge. Many of the shops were closed the week after Christmas but we found plenty to do. Brochures found in the house described the hiking trails which assisted us in deciding where we would go if the grandparents were going. We visited Ingle's daily, sometimes two or three times a day. They make a great coconut cake. I loved the views. I was introduced to a vibrant sorghum plant. Our children come from Arizona, North Carolina, Washington State,, and Kentucky. It was wonderful to be in such a relaxing home.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your very kind words, we are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Next time you are out and stop at Ingles you should try the Banana Pudding, it is delicious! Just be sure to buy some extra Nilla Wafers. =)

Pleasant and Comfortable

  • 3 of 5

The view from the front driveway is great, but there is no view from the back deck. The fire pit in the front is great. There is a separate apartment there but it is closed up. The grill we needed was locked up there. The other bedroom besides the master on the 1st floor has a queen bed. Upstairs, the carpet is badly stained in several places. But the bedrooms are nice, with only one bathroom. Downstairs is totally useless and is totally not for guests. The living room and dining room are fine. Neither fireplace in the living room or master bedroom was working so someone was called in to get them functioning. I was looking for a little more glamorous or updated rental so this house would not be a choice for us again. Finally, we received a curt comment from the owner because through no fault of our own we had not made the final payment. I had authorized the company to charge the full amount of our stay when we booked, so there lies the blame. The note from the owner said that he would turn off the water! Overall, for a non-fussy family, this would be an OK rental, albeit pricey for what you get.

Owner's Response: I shall respond one item at a time. Unfortunately most of these comments are new to us; we would have appreciated you spoken to us directly rather than leave a negative review, as we are hardworking people willing to assist if there are problems. You said: "view from the front driveway is great, but there is no view from the back deck." Me: Nature made the landscape. I am glad you appreciated that 3/4 of the 2 acres has great views. You said: "There is a separate apartment there but it is closed up" Me: There is more than a separate apartment, there is an entire first floor basement that is locked all season (with one exception noted later.) The house is around 6k square foot and we rent about 3100 sf. We state this clearly our ad and in many of the pictures. Please review the house details again. You said: "The grill we needed was locked up there." Me: Absolutely not true. There is an outdoor porch with a grill. It is pictured in our ad. The apartment you think has a full grill is actually a full kitchen for the first floor with a wonderful gas stove. We do not rent that kitchen, nor do we rent any other rooms on the first floor. Please review our ad again and check your rental agreement. You said: "The other bedroom besides the master on the 1st floor has a queen bed." Absolutely true, exactly as stated in our ad. You said: "Upstairs, the carpet is badly stained in several places. But the bedrooms are nice, with only one bathroom." We are not aware that the carpet upstairs is badly stained. We will have our maintenance get it cleaned if needed. There is one bathroom upstairs and 1.5 baths on first floor for total of 2.5 baths. You said: "Downstairs is totally useless..." Me: The first floor is not for rent. We leave the door open during the winter so the furnace down there will heat the floors above. Courtesy for our guests to be warm in the winter. The first floor is not otherwise usable for guests. Please review our ad again. "Fireplaces...someone was called in to get them functioning." Me: We live in FL; you had a problem and it got fixed after you notified us. The fireplace in bedroom is not safe to use. We care about your health. You said, "...received a curt comment...owner because...we had not made the final payment....said that he would turn off the water!" Not true.We spoke w/Ken on the phone 2 times and Jeff to resolve. We were kind to Ken who did not know how to pay online. We said if no pmt we had to ask you to leave. Thanks

Wonderful home with great views and everything you could need or want!!!

  • 5 of 5

We took my Mother and in-laws for a long weekend to Hiawassee. It wasn't our first choice but due to hurricane damage we had to change our location and boy we weren't disappointed. Some of our guest have mobility issues so it was very important we chose a place that was easy to get in of and around. The owners were very good about telling us their set up and stair count etc. The house is just beautiful and our family never stopped commenting on how much they liked it and what a good job we did on choice.

The location is great and close to town. We went to Hightower Vineyards which is only 4 miles away. The owners and everyone there is great and so nice. Great place and you can catch the football game too. Also had dinner at the Copper Door which is only 12 miles away --very easy drive from the house and it was fabulous. Ask for David and get the escargot and pork belly appetizers!

Sunday we were all lazy and the house provided a perfect place for us all to relax and do what you wanted....we streamed the NFL, sat by the far, some took long soaks in the master tub while the chili cooked for dinner. It was nice to have everything you needed in the kitchen and around the house. I had to contact the owners and they were always prompt with responding. If you are looking for a great house with great views and all the comforts of home (plus some) book this place. We will definitely be back! Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Amazing Hiawassee, Ga home

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this home. It had all the amenities we needed. It was set off by itself, so our voices or music didn't bother any neighbors. The view of the mountains was great, and we even had a great view of the full moon between the trees. We were very comfortable there, and we hope to return again next year.
