The 270 Degree Beach And Mountain View Will Leave You Speechless!
The Short Version: A studio that has been converted to provide a more private 1 bedroom, 1 full bathroom, Full Kitchen, 1 Queen Sized bed in bedroom, 2 day beds in front room. Ridiculously amazing views from this 6th floor unit of both the ocean and the mountains.
There is no better place to recharge your biological battery than the Windward side of the island of Oahu – that’s the opposite side of the island from Honolulu. The pace on the windward side is slower, you might call it Hawaiian Country Living. You don’t need to send your son or daughter down to the beach to stake your claim to a 4 foot by 4 foot section of sand. You won’t find yourself discovering that your hotel room has a view of the hotel across the street. No vendors are going to hand you fliers for one of thousands of tourist traps. You won’t find shoulder to shoulder crowds virtually everywhere you try to go. On the windward side, you leave all that behind.
Over on this side of the island, you are going to find the kind of Hawaiian Experience that most people dream of. Soothing trade winds, the occasional tropical rain fall, clean and crowd free beaches all accompanied by the tune of the surf. After all, you are going to a tropical island. Why stay in what is basically the same city you left, just plopped down on the leeward side of Oahu? You want that tropical experience – and that is what this unit delivers!
The Beach : If you are going to visit a tropical island, you want the beach, right? Well, you got it. This property is located right on the water. All that there is between you and dipping your toes in the pacific is about 50 feet of lawn and sand and a 6 story ride in an elevator! We could have cut the time down by installing a zip line from your lanai to the beach, but the homeowners association would not allow it. Party poopers.
Protected Coastline : A mile or so offshore is a reef. This makes the beach nice and calm – perfect for swimming, snorkeling or just enjoying the warm tropical waters – particularly for younger children who might not be ready to take on the typical Hawaiian surf. You can swim out and observe the sea life that swims just feet from the beach.
The View : What about when it’s time to relax a little? Maybe you spent your first day enjoying a little too much sun and you need to get some relief for that nasty sun burn. That should not mean you cannot enjoy the reason you came to this tropical paradise – right? From this corner unit on the 6th floor – you have the widest and most sweeping view possible of not only the beach as it stretches off to the horizon to the north and the south, you also get a great view of those majestic Hawaiian mountain ranges. All from the comfort of your lanai (that’s what they call a balcony in Hawaii). So take a seat and continue to enjoy the view – right from the condo – all 270 degrees of it!
The Surf : Okay, so maybe you are not the kind of vacationer who likes to hang out in the room – or even stay in any one place too long. If you are the more active type, or an experienced surfer, you can enjoy all that Hawaiis North Shore has to offer. Yes, we are talking about THAT North Shore. You know, the one that has been immortalized and celebrated in movies, Beach Boys songs and professional surfing events for decades! You are just about 30 minutes away from the best the North Shore has to offer! Not an experienced surfer? No worries, there are some great locals who teach surfing classes near the North Shore – I can totally hook you up!
Accommodates 4 : Let’s take a second to talk about what “Accommodate” means. For me, that means being able to eat, sleep and relax in comfort. You are not going to find any futons or couches that unfold into a “bed”. There is one queen and two twin sized day beds. The two twin beds also serve as couches during the day, but in this case they are beds serving as couches, not couches serving as beds. Nothing finishes off a great day at Hanauma Bay or the Polynesian Cultural Center better than a good nights sleep – so I make sure you have comfortable beds to come home to.
The Layout : The condo was originally set up as a studio, but has been modified so that there is a bedroom area that is separated from the living room by the kitchen. It’s an open floor plan to allow for air flow, so there is no door separating the bedroom area. There is one bathroom. For your comfort, there are also two ceiling fans installed to help keep things cool.
Kitchen : The kitchen has everything you need to prepare your daily meals. There are two supermarkets near by where you can stock up on whatever you would like for your stay. It includes an electric cook top, oven, sink with garbage disposal, coffee maker, microwave oven, toaster, blender and all the cookware, glasses, plates and bowls you are likely to need. There is no dishwasher, so those you will need to wash by hand. There is also a dining table that accommodates 4 easily. The kitchen is a utilitarian affair – but it gets the job done!
Television and DVD player : A television with basic local cable is provided, including a DVD player for you to play any movies you may have brought along. If you have children, you know how handy this will be during your down time.
Some gear for the fun! : I try to keep a decent selection of useful items for your visits to the beach. This includes fins, snorkels, masks, sand chairs, buckets and shovels for sand castles – maybe even a boogie board or two. For any other gear you might want to acquire, there are stores nearby where you will be able to find what you need. UPDATE: After about a year now, I am finding that more items go missing than I expected. So I cannot guarantee the availability of any of the gear. I restock whenever I visit, but I cannot guarantee how long the items remain available.
Destinations to choose from! : Oahu has a great deal to offer. You can visit the Polynesian Cultural Center located just a few minutes up the road to the north. Turn toward the south and you can visit Kualoa Ranch for horse back riding, zip lining, ATV riding, nature tours and tons more – they also made Jurassic Park and other movies on their 4000 acre property. If you really want to at least sample the crowded and more tourist focused side of the island, Waikiki is just about an hours drive away. There really are tons of options. I do my best to keep a useful list at the condo for you.
Washer/Dryer : A washer and dryer are included so that you can visit with a minimum of luggage! When I am visiting, I usually just bring a single carry on with only 2 or 3 days worth of what I need. Being able to do the laundry while you are there just makes traveling that much easier!
Secured Building : The building where this condo is located provides key pass access only. So if you want to use the elevators or access the stair wells, you have to have the security dongle to do so. This gives an added level of security and provides some peace of mind.
What This Unit Is Not: The photos and description make it clear what this unit is, but I want to make sure you know what it is not. You are not going to find granite counter tops or cabinets made from the rarest teak woods and the finest flooring. Everything works, but the unit is utilitarian. If what makes a vacation amazing for you is the finest of updated furniture and cabinets, you will want to select another unit.
I started offering this as a vacation rental in July of 2015 and I have met some great folks over that time who have appreciated this unique getaway as much as I have! Since that first rental, I have taken feedback from guests and updated the flooring by removing the carpeting and installing tile. I would love to do some kitchen upgrades next, but that will take some time since I am continuing to try and keep that rental rate reasonable. I want to thank those of you who have chosen to vacation at my place - particularly those that have done it more than once over the relatively short time it has been available!

I am a California boy, but my sister has lived on Oahu since college and my parents and grandparents moved to the island in the late 1980s. They all lived at Pats - where this unit is. So our family has tended to spend a lot of time in Hawaii. I have never been able to find a way to live there myself. I finished college at San Jose State University and aside from a few periods - have lived in California all my life.
Robert purchased this Condo in 1988
Why Robert chose Punaluu
When most of my family was living in Hawaii, they lived in the building where this unit is. It was great to have to travel to a place like this to visit the parents and grandparents! Eventually, most of them moved back, but as a family, we wanted to hold on to at least one place so that we could return as often as we could. Maybe I developed an odd attraction for this place, but I have been lucky enough to travel to some of the most amazing places in the world. But I still return to my little home on the beach in Punaluu! It only takes about 3 days for all the stress and weight of the world to melt away here. If you are like me, you love the tradewinds. My absolute favorite place is that corner of the lanai where you can see the mountains and the beach - when the trade winds blow, you get an amazing breeze in that spot - it feels like the wind is alive. It is impossible to describe, but completely engrossing. The sound of the surf is so soothing. If you are like me, you will end up sleeping outside on the Lanai or at least on one of the daybeds.
What makes this Condo unique
I suppose what makes this place so unique is the view and the higher elevation. End units are amazingly rare. It is even more rare for those to end up as vacation rentals! I am sure you will want to fill your vacation with all that there is to see and do. But I tell you, I just arrive, stock up at the grocery store and stay right there for weeks at a time if I can!

Lovely place, but the trade winds and traffic we're noisy at night. The beach location was ideal.
The beds were comfortable, kitchen was fully equipped, beach was great. The weather during our trip was gray and windy and the louvered windows allowed for lots of noise from wind and traffic, especially noticable at night. It seems like it was half hour drive either direction to find a nice restaurant/bar. Stores were about 10 minute drive. There were some electrical and internet interruptions when we were there, a clear sign to go play more! I would recommend it for a casual traveler and would definitely go back!
Nice place with great views
We were looking for a place with views and able to take long walks on the beach. This place served us well. Nestled on the scenic Windward coast between the beach and the highway. We slept on the sofas in the living room to listen to the sound of the surf. Unfortunately the road noise was quite load in the bedroom. This place was located well for visiting Oahu's sites away from Honolulu.
Great price, convenient location, everything you need...
The building is old but solid, the condo is not fresh and new but is equipped with everything you could possibly need. We did not sleep in the bedroom, as the street noise was too much. However, the front room provides a VERY comfortable day bed that, when put together, makes a king size bed!! The sound of the waves hitting the shore, and the breeze through the trees drowned out the street noise. Residents of the building are friendly and welcoming. Good value and convenient location to come back to at the end of days filled with enjoying the island. As well, good communication with Robert throughout the process.
Great Condo with a Great View!!!
Capture great sunrises from this condo.
Thanks so much for this kind review! I am glad you were able to get the most out of your visit!
The furniture was very shabby and the unit was dirty - dirty dishes, dirty floors, dusty everything.
The view from this unit is lovely, but I e stayed in this building several times and the other units have been very nicely updated. Most everything in this unit looks like it's been taking a good beating since 1983. But the worst part was that it was not clean. I spent my first night after a long travel day wiping things down and washing dirty dishes that had been put away. If I had the option, we would not have stayed, but it was pre-booked and paid for. There was no mop for the floor, and as I did not want to spend my vacation on hands and knees scrubbing it, I had to instead scrub my babies feet before bed every night because they were nearly black after running around in those fooors after his shower. Sent the owner pictures and comments after our stay, no response. It's a shame, this could be a wonderful unit if it was updated and cared for.
I take all feedback very seriously and I have reached out to my cleaning folks to see why the unit was not as clean as you would have liked it to be. While I can understand the criticism about the unit being dated (Even my description of the unit makes that perfectly clear), I put a very high priority on making sure the unit is well maintained and cleaned for my guests.
I do have to say that I never received any photos from you or any message at all aside from this review. I am sure you sent something, but it was not sent to me or through the contact system included in VRBO.
As time goes on, I do update the unit a step at a time. If I were to do it all in one go, I would have to raise my rate to the same high level that most other units currently rent for - so while the unit has dated features, everything is in working order and allows me to make this unique unit available for an affordable price. For instance, new flooring was the most recent update along with new ceiling fans.
I am sorry that the experience was not what you hoped for. I am glad we were able to accommodate your need to arrive at a very late hour.
Amazing views! Quiet...except for ocean waves but, that’s what it’s all about!!
We enjoyed our stay here. Nice, security, everything you might need in a home away from home!
So glad you enjoyed the place! There is no better way to fall asleep than to the sound of the surf! I also see you stayed in November. Winter on the windward side of Oahu is just awesome!
Ideally located on the windward side of Oahu, this unit is just 5 minutes from the Polynesian Cultural Center. The famous North Shore and Kulima Golf Course are off to the north. Kaneohe and all its attractions are to the south. Kualoa Ranch is also located to the south with all its many activities!
