Enjoy this lake cabin in the Smoky Mountains-near Murphy NC-best of both worlds!
Our lakefront cabin is located on Lake Hiwassee which is the deepest TVA lake that sports over 160 miles of shoreline bordered by the Nantahala Forest and so over 90% of the shoreline is undeveloped. The result is that there are not many homes on the lake, and little boat traffic as it is off of the beaten path and mostly located inside of a State Park. This is a huge lake located in the Smoky Mountains, and you can have the best of both worlds in enjoying a pristine lake and magnificent mountains.
This SMOKE-FREE AND PET FREE cabin has four bedrooms, three tiled bathrooms and a loft. "Cabin" doesn't do it justice as guests are surprised by the comfortable furnishings. There is over 2400 square feet of living space and another 800 square feet ocomprised of screened porches and decks. Two of the bedrooms are located on the main level. The master bedroom has a king-size bed, and the private bathroom has a jet tub as well as a shower. The second bedroom on the main level has a queen-size bed, and the second bathroom is located next to it. Both of these bedrooms have a private deck.
There is a fully equipped kitchen with stainless appliances, custom cabinetry and Silestone countertops. There are hardwood floors throughout the main level with a bar area and stools located off of the entrance area. The entrance hall has stairs leading to the loft which has a sleeper sofa and is a perfect nook for children who want to slip away. Also located on the main level is the great room with a vaulted ceiling, a wood burning fireplace, plenty of comfortable furniture and large French sliding doors that lead to the screened porch which is the perfect place to enjoy your first cup of coffee. In addition to the seating area, there is a long wooden table with benches to provide plenty of room for your family and friends.
The downstairs is carpeted and has a large den, two bedrooms, a bathroom and laundry room. One of the bedrooms has a queen-size bed, and the other has two sturdy wooden oversized bunk beds. The bottom of each bunk has a full-sized mattress and the top is a twin. Off of the downstairs is another huge screened porch that has a hammock and a ping pong table. We like to sit upstairs on the screened porch off of the main floor and listen to the teenagers as they are playing ping pong or talking on the dock. It is amazing what you can learn!
Just off of the downstairs screened porch is the fire pit and grilling area that has a gas and charcoal grill complete with four Adirondack rocking chairs for your comfort. It's just a short walk down the steps to the dock which has an amazing view of the lake and mountains. The dock is the perfect spot to rest, read or just relax and enjoy the view.
Our lake house is located in Bear Paw which is a private gated community which offers many amenities including a large swimming pool, tennis court, volleyball court, a covered pavilion, fishing pond and a children's playground. Mountain View Marina is located inside of Bear Paw and has a boat ramp if you want to bring your own boat. The marina will rent boats, kayaks or paddle boards by the hour or day and is a short drive from the cabin and even a shorter ride by boat. They are extremely friendly and have pontoons for rent which are simple to operate for the boating novice. Since this is a TVA lake, during the winter months, the lake level is usually dropped by about 40 feet. Lake Hiawasee is the deepest lake in the TVA system and is 300 feet deep at the dam and navigable year round. The cove behind our cabin is about 25 feet deep at full pool, and there is a dock behind the cabin where you can park your boat. Since the TVA lowers the water level during the winter months, you will not be able to dock a boat behind our cabin from about November thrul March. However, the marina has short term slip rentals available so you would be able to rent a slip for your boat and enjoy the lake during the winter season as the marina is located on a deeper part of the lake and has water year round..
This is the perfect vacation as it offers something for everyone whether you like the mountains or the water.

About Mary Frances
We bought the lake lot in 1993 and started building the cabin in 2003 as a retreat for our family. We have spent many hours here as we have shared it with our family and friends. We live in north-west Georgia and wanted to be able to get away with our children for the weekend and knew to be able to enjoy a vacation home more frequently, we did not want to have to drive much more than 2 hours.
Mary Frances purchased this Cabin in 2004
Why Mary Frances chose Shoal Creek
We had visited other lakes and were concerned about congestion it was as we enjoy boating, swimming and water sports and are very safety conscience. When we visited Lake Hiwassee for the first time in 1993 it was Labor Day weekend, and we rented a boat which broke down (they now have newer boats). We spent over an hour on the water before we even saw another boat (whose operator was gracious enough to tow us back to the marina). We immediately called a realtor, looked at the available lake lots that day and made an offer. The lake is not busy, even during holiday weekends so we can enjoy doing all of the things we love without the worry of heavy boat traffic.
What makes this Cabin unique
We visited friends who had cabins and stayed in as many lake cabins as we could during the first ten years we owned the lot and made lists of the things we thought worked as well as of those items which could use improvement. So when we were ready to start building in 2003, we knew what we wanted. For instance, all of the bedrooms and rooms have overhead fans even though there is central heating and air conditioning as the mountain air is generally cool and refreshing. There are two bedrooms and baths on the main floor so so to accommodate two families plus the main level is flat. The porches have reinforced railings so that when our children were young, when they ran into them while on their Big Wheels, the screens wouldn't tear, and there was minimnal danger of them busting thru them. There is extra insulation in all of the walls as we found people wake up at different times, and the sound is reduced to keep it quiet as possible for those who want to sleep in late! Also we have lots of windows to allow for the natural light and to enjoy the views. Everyone loves hanging out on the screened porches where you feel like you are in a huge private tree-house.

Perfect for our Guy’s Weekend trip
We took a group of 11 guys (7 adults, 4 kids) to the lake for a spring time fishing trip and stayed at this house. The water’s edge doesn’t reach the dock in March, so we just had to pull our boats onto the sandy bank. Other than that, this house was all we needed for our fishing trip!
As mentioned in the property description, this is a TVA lake which means that the Tennessee Valley Authority (government agency) controls the dam at the head of the lake. The cove where our cabin is located is about 20 feet deep during the summer (generally Memorial Day thru Labor Day) but during the fall, the TVA begins to lower the lake level a total of about 40 feet. Sometime during the winter, the TVA allows the water level to rise wihich impacts our cove which means that our dock sits on the bank generally from November thru March. The main lake is very deep (300 feet at the dam) so it is navigable year round. If you rent the cabin from November thru March, our cove may be dry with just the creek running thru it. However, the main lake is just two doors away and within view.
Roomy and comfortable
Our large family stayed together for a long weekend and enjoyed having enough room for all of us. The accommodations are comfortable and homey. We would love to come back in the summer to enjoy the lake.
Lots of character and charm. Very cozy cabin and very clean. Also very well-stocked. Bit of a hike (~35 min) to get to town/to the nearest store in the fall, as the marina closed down, but that did add to the feeling of getting away from it all. Had a fire going every night that we stayed (in Nov) and enjoyed the outdoor table and screened-in porch.
Great setting, great time of year to be there.
We have been to Murphy many times, vacation there almost every year! This was a wonderful home in a beautiful neighborhood. The property is very private and quiet. The home has a great layout and can accommodate many people. Plenty of room for everyone! Thank you so much for the stay!
The stay was to short. Loved it.
Thank you for sharing your home with us.... we were very comfortable in this well furnished home! Keeping our kayaks at the dock was a big plus.... loved the screened porch! Thanks for a great vacation spot!!!
The Ocoee River is approximately a 30 minute drive from Bear Paw. There are multiple companies offer white water excursions on these world class rapids where the 1996 Olympic white water kyacking events were held. If you want a calmer white water experience then check out the Nantahala River which is just north of Murphy. There is white water rafting, canoeing, kyacking and mountain biking throughout the area. If you enjoy crafts, don't miss the John C. Campbell Folk Art School just outside of Murphy. Classes are offered as well as craft shows as some of the best artisans from the southeast display their wares. If you want to stay closer to the cabin then visit downtown historic Murphy where the "Downtown Pizza Parlor" has a homemade pizza buffet and the best chocolate chip pizza dessert you will ever taste. There are several other restaurants, such as Doyle's where a chef from Atlanta offers wonderful American cuisine. There is a wonderful independent book store, coffee shop, old fashioned cinema ("the Henn") complete with a balcony, aromatherapy store that also offers yoga classes. Local farmers bring their produce on Saturday mornings to the open air market, and you have a wide variety of crafts to view. The first time I went, I arrived close to noon which is when it closes. A woman had a pail full of magnificent sunflowers which I offered to buy. She told me to "make an offer!" to which I responded "$15". She then said "too much!!!" She got me down to $5, and I walked away with a bucket full of sunflowers. If you like gambling, there is a casino iin Murphy- Harrah's Cherokee Valley River Casino. It's ten miles away by the way the crow flies an a 27 mile drive doorstep to doorstep. Finally, do not miss seeing the dam which was built in the 1930's. It is over 300 feet high. Just drive thru the gates of Bear Paw and then drive straight across the road, down the hill then veer right. It is truly an amazing structure to behold and you can see what the river valley looked like before the lake was created.

Additional information about rental rates
During the summer, I prefer to rent the cabin from Sunday to Saturday but will consider a two night rental. There is a security deposit required which is fully refundable so long as the cabin is left in good order.
