Overview

About the property

COOL PLACE TO BE IN THE HEAT OF SUMMER! GRAB YOUR WEEK WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

This IS the cozy little cabin that the imagination conjures whenever "cozy little cabin" is mentioned. This 2/1, 720 sqft log cabin transports you to a simpler time and place to enhance your getaway. Open-raftered ceilings, wide plank flooring and hand made decor, gives the Rivercane an historic mountain feel, while being barely 20 years old. This cabin is located just 1.1 mile from the John C Campbell Folkschool and a mere 1/2 mile off Brasstown Rd. It's cozy dead end location is very private without being remote. Nestled into a wooded hilltop setting, you'll feel hidden from the world, while being able to gaze across a slice of Brasstown Valley from the porch and half the cabin. Every room has a woodland view, ever-changing as the sun makes its daily trip and the seasons serve up an ever changing palette. It's the perfect home base to either recharge your batteries from your work-a-day world OR regroup your thoughts after a creative day at the Folkschool.

To stay connected if you must, there is wi-fi and a smart TV (no cable), wi-fi or device ready, an equipped kitchen, all linens with washer & dryer. Both bedrooms (one queen, one full bed) are ground floor. While there is a working fireplace and outdoor fire pit, we have determined these to be temporarily out of commission, due to the drought and recent fires in neighboring counties.

To unplug if you wish, you never have to step off the property or out of the neighborhood, to see deer, turkey, fox, stars and moonlight. There are outdoor activities aplenty, with trails, rivers and lakes peppering the area. There are restaurants, art events and music in Murphy only 7 miles away. In this picturesque mountain town, you'll also find antique shops along with craft and specialty shops. There is also a new Casino in Murphy that is a few minutes east of downtown Murphy. If you find yourself in a medical emergency, Murphy Medical Center, is only 4 miles away, in Peachtree.

Of course the biggest draw in our little Brasstown is the John C. Campbell Folkschool, founded in 1925, which offers over 750 classes a year in 19 studios. It has music, dance and community events that are open to the public. Check out their website to see what might interest you.

Finally, be sure not to overload your agenda, because the best part about a mountain getaway is doing nothing at all.

About Roger Fingar

I am Roger, an almost retired painting and decorating contractor, based out of Tampa for over 40 years. Architectural creativity has always been an avocation for me. I've dabbled in timber framing, treehouse building, live edge construction, stonework and my own brand of custom wood finishing. My lovely wife, Lynda, is a retired art teacher, who continually explores new methods of artistic expression in both familiar and unfamiliar media. For both of us our greatest joy is creative expression in our complementary arenas of interest. Occasionally we've been known to collaborate a project, however scarcely a day goes by when we don't consult each other about some aspect of a project, either helping with a creative pathway or with some problem solving issue. It helps that we respect each other's opinion more than anyone else's.

Roger Fingar purchased this cabin in 2016

Why Roger Fingar chose Brasstown

We selected this property for many reasons. We bought it sight unseen (from marketing photos) and were not disappointed. It's location was a big attraction for us. It's only a mile away form the John C. Campbell Folkschool which has a deep connection for us both. It's proximity to other property we own, made in convenient as a "beachhead" for future building projects, both ground attached and in the trees. The modest size of the cabin is a perfect reminder that our North Carolina life should be a somewhat simplified one - at least not a duplication of the complex lifestyle we have in our Florida life. It's by no means a "Tiny House". We call it a "Not so tiny house" - small but livable, with every square foot having a purpose.

It was built by a retired doctor from Colorado and his wife, who taught at the Folkschool for several decades.

What makes this cabin unique

The location, the view, the Folkschool proximity and the feel of the cabin itself, have been a magical experience for us and our guests, in the short year since we purchased the Rivercane. It's a privilege to share this wonderful place with others so it can become their experience, too. From the "nestled in the woods" environment (in the middle of seven wooded acres) to the artistic vibe of the neighborhood, being there has truly been a gift to us!

Absolutely Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, grandson & I could not have appreciated this beautiful cabin more than we did. The cabin itself was very warm & welcoming walking in. Tastefully decorated inside & out. We enjoyed the hammock for R&R. Explored around property. Enjoyed the Campbell Folk School and hiked their grounds. Centrally located for dining out & grocery stores. Drove to Smokey Mountains, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and the beautiful elk at Cataloochee State Park. The neighbors we met are very welcoming. Sadly our week went by way to quickly. This is truly a slice of heaven. Look forward to going back along with a class at Folk School.

Thank you for sharing your home!

Woodland Treasure!

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a warm and welcoming cabin to call home while you are away from home look no further! This cabin abounds with good energy and charm. From the second you walk through the door you feel nothing but the goodness that is there to enjoy. The inside of the cabin has alot of fun eclectic decorating that you could spend hours looking at and not take it all in and the outside is pure peace and quiet that comes with the beautiful land that the cabin sits on. So much to enjoy in a private cabin setting, yet it is close to many things to do, including the Folk School. This cozy cabin is delight and the hosts are wonderful! It is simplicity at its best. What more could one ask for?

Quaint and wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks so much to the owners of this glorious hideaway. It was quiet, completely stocked and perfectly appointed with everything you need. Very clean and it SMELLED clean which is such a plus when traveling. The only real info a future renter should know is that if the weather is icy, snowy, etc., you may want to park at the bottom of the hill and you'd have to walk up and down. The lane is curvy and steep and the cabin sits at the most beautiful spot on top of a hill. Gorgeous views! We had great weather and had no problems at all. It's less than 5 minutes by car from the John C. Campbell campus and my husband walked down several mornings, taking him about 30 minutes. If you're a student there, it's very easy to zip back and forth for meals if you have a car. We loved it and hope to be regulars!

Owner's Response: Just a quick clarification about possible ice/snow conditions as it relates to the final approach to the cabin: It's only the final few hundred yards that have a couple switchbacks of modest steepness. At only 1800ft in elevation, the little snow we get melts all too quickly to suit both guests and locals. Neighbors along that final stretch of road are really friendly. If your comfort level with weather makes you find the need to park short of the cabin, make sure it's in a place that doesn't block the road or driveways. Meanwhile, know that no one in the area has needed to do this for quite awhile and therefore I believe these measures only necessary in the most extreme of weather. I do however, appreciate this guest bringing this to the attention of future guests.

Wonderful cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

Was literally 5 minutes away from the John C Campbell Folk School which was important.

Fantastic cabin for off campus housing. Cabin was extremely clean and had everything we could possibly need.

Beds and living room furniture were nice and comfy. Will definately rent again!!

The PERFECT 'little cabin in the woods' and only a 5 min drive to JCCFS!!

  • 5 of 5

Upon pulling in the driveway, the setting was so comfortable in all directions! Loved seeing a nice front porch; the awesome firepit; clothes line (even tho' a tad too chilly to use in January); woods with trails; wonderful view out front of neighboring mountain; nicely landscaped and LOVED the "Create" area with the 'colored pencils' in the woods!! Inside was impeccable and the most well-stocked rental I believe I have ever had the pleasure of renting! Loved having a working fireplace, washer/dryer and any/everything one could want and/or need! Owners were so friendly and answered many questions of curiosity that I had about their fabulous mountain cabin and their fun decor! After many hard days of 'work' in our JCCFS classes, what a comfortable place to relax and refresh before the next day's class! Thank you SO much, Fingars, for sharing this wonderful cabin with us! You'll be hearing from us again!

Perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful cabin with all the comforts of home.. Great town & restaurants nearby but also wilderness adventure! The ONLY improvement we could have imagined was to have a crackling fire inside in the fireplace, but our family had a great time around the fire pit outside! Enjoyed all interactions with host and felt that the cabin was the cleanest, comfiest, most well-stocked rental we have ever stayed in! We took a family photo in front of the cabin before we left so we could remember our little vacation :)

Map

WE are in Brasstown, NC, located in Cherokee County, approximately 7 miles southeast of the picturesque town of Murphy. Brasstown is home of the John C Campbell Folkschool, an art school for everyone with weekly classes in woodworking, clay, enameling, fiber arts, paper arts, painting, blacksmithing, cooking, writing, music and many other offerings in 19 studios. Just east of Murphy is the new Harrah's Valley River Casino. Downtown Murphy has many great local restaurants and the local Valley River Brewery. The Appalachian Trail passes approx. 15 miles to the east and there are many local parks with hiking trails. Whitewater sports and ziplining abound on the Nantahala River out of Bryson City and the Ocoee River across the state line in Tennessee.
