The perfect vacation cabin for families. Directly on the river.

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,400 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Situated on the beautiful Nottely River, you will find our cabin a relaxing escape. It will accommodate 6 guests, but not more than 4 adults. The cabin offers privacy with spectacular views of the Nantahala National Forest and the river. It is located at the end of the road on the river and abuts the forest. The 2 mile drive back to the cabin through the canopy of trees is something you'll remember and enjoy.

Views from the wrap-around screened porch are beautiful. Open the french doors in the master bedroom for the relaxing sounds of the river at night and great views during the day. Evenings by the campfire can produce some very fun and memorable moments. You can also step off the bank and test your skills in the river that is home to a variety of fish including browns, rainbows and native brookies. You'll be amazed at the pristine setting and you will likely be the only person(s) on the river.

For those who enjoy a more active vacation, there's golfing, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, boating, horseback riding, hiking trails, mountain biking trails, and ATV trails, all within a few minutes drive of this quiet retreat on the river. You can put your kayak in up river from the cabin on the 'release' and enjoy a fun 20 minute ride back to the cabin, or just tube the river when not on the release and enjoy an hour and a half ride back to the cabin.

It’s secluded, yet convenient. Although we’re at the 'end of the road', it’s only a short ten to fifteen minute drive to Murphy, the center of everything in this part of Western North Carolina! Located between the Ocoee River in Tennessee, and the Nantahala River in North Carolina where whitewater Olympic contenders have trained. Here you will find a town reminiscent of days gone by with a very walkable main street with enough cafes, restaurants, and shops to keep you interested. Side-by-side flea markets close by on weekends, a flea market in the city on Tuesdays, and even a downtown farmers market on Saturdays. This is just a beautiful area to travel the back roads and create your own adventure!

Drive the Cherohala Skyway (rivals the Blue Ridge Parkway for unobstructed long-range views). Ride the 'Tail of the Dragon' through Deal's Gap. Visit the Joyce Kilmore Memorial Forest or the John Campbell Folk School for classes in folk art, crafts, contra-dancing, blacksmithing, bluegrass music, etc. Or just take a drive through a country-side replete with post card views.

Daytrips: Blue Ridge, Georgia has wonderful downtown shops and you must visit the Toccoa Riverside Restaurant for a wonderful meal.

Ellijay, Georgia - is the Apple Capital of Georgia - travel along Highway 52 to visit apple barns. Close by is Amicalola Falls - 729 feet of waterfalls, the largest east of the Mississippi.

Dahlonega, Georgia - has shopping at its best and home of The Smith House - a family-style restaurant that is awesome!

Cherokee, North Carolina - has the casino and you can trout fish on the Cherokee reservation land for a nominal price.

Asheville, North Carolina - home of The Biltmore House that is a must see!

Bryson City, North Carolina - Make reservations through Great Smoky Mountain Railroad for a beautiful trip along the Nantahala River and visit the River's End Restaurant for great food.

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee - visit Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, as well as many outlet stores. Gatlinburg has the seven mile loop full of craft stores.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a wonderful time we had. My daughter came up on Sunday and they all went white water rafting and had a nice dinner together. The whole family played in the river just deep enough for kayak but safe for my son to kayak around. The neighbors dogs Murphy and Lady came daily for a treat and we all rode the ATV on the trails. It was a great relaxing weekend. Your home is perfect at the end of the street very secluded.

Thanks for the relaxing weekend, my husband and I desperately needed!

Serenity by the River

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the River Retreat was just wonderful. We found the cabin to be cozy and most comfortable. It was very well equipped and we could think of nothing that was neglected. We did enjoy many of the places we visited in the surrounding area but the real attraction was right at our footsteps which was the river. When at its lower levels, it was comforting and mesmerizing. We enjoyed watching it rise during the releases of which there were several durng the week. At its high point it was a completely different river, just fascinating. We also enjoyed watching the local wildlife...geese, ducks, deer, etc.

Brantz, the owner was a delight to work with and most helpful. We met some friendly and pleasant neighbors inclluding Bentley the friendly Golden Retreiver who made frequent visits.

Of the dozens of cabins or cabins we've stayed in over 40 years from Canada to the Florida keys, we both agreed this was our favorite setting. Can't think of a single negative.

A great cabin on the river!

  • 4 of 5

The home was easy to find with the directions given, private, clean and inviting. We had great family time, but the home afforded privacy as well. The beds were very comfortable and kitchen was well stocked. We enjoyed reading and playing games on the porch, riverside, watching the rain. We were sad to find there were no tubes to be purchased anywhere in Murphy at the end of the summer. We had a great time rafting the Ocoee and hiking Turtletown Falls.

The property and area are great! The river really makes this place desirable. The home was exactly what we needed and the decor beautiful. Very relaxing! My son learned to fish over the weekend and loved it!

Beautiful home, awesome location directly on the river!

  • 4 of 5

Great house right on the river! Truly enjoyed the location. Very peaceful & quiet except for the sound of the river & birds. Great internet service for our teenager. . Our only complaint was the house listed 2 queen beds & only has one. Fortunately we always travel with an extra air mattress in case the beds aren't comfortable so it worked out okay. Also, the kitchen is lacking in spices & cooking oil, so l would bring whats needed for meals. Would definitely rent the house again, just not with another married couple. Thanks for your hospitality! Beautiful well maintained home in a great location!

Owner's Response: I appreciate the guest taking time to leave a review. Their feedback helps us improve future guests enjoyment of the cabin. They made a good catch on my error on bed sizes. My wife tells me they are right that there is a difference between the beds in the guest bedroom and the master bedroom. I thought both were queens, but I stand corrected. The master bedroom has a queen and the guest bedroom has a full. I will be changing the beds and adding new mattresses in mid August 2018 when I go up for a maintenance visit. The master bedroom will have a king size bed and the guest bedroom that now has a full will be changed to a queen sized bed. I can't believe someone hasn't caught this before and brought it to my attention. I apologize for the misstatement. I hope the changes will make for better guest's experiences at our cabin. I don't believe I'll make any changes to the kitchen supplies. We do not supply cooking oil or spices or any foodstuffs at the cabin. We ask our guest to take all foodstuffs with them when they depart. Arriving guests will find salt and pepper only. No sugar or spices are left in the cabin. Thank you for your feedback and review and for choosing our cabin for your vacation.

Main attraction is the river

  • 3 of 5

We had a nice time at the cabin but I’m not sure we would stay again. The best part of the cabin was the river, it was absolutely beautiful to be that close and hear the sound of the water. My husband really enjoyed fly fishing and even caught his first fish and My two toddlers played on the shore. The negative part was the house wasn’t as clean as I would have liked, although I am fairly picking so others might not mind as much. The cups all needed to be cleaned even though they were in the cabinet. The grill was also not clean when we went to use it. The bath towels had bleach stains on them and smelled very musty. We also didn’t love the fact that the neighbors are VERY close to the house. I had the impression the cabin was more private. The lawn was fairly long too so we didn’t play with the kids in the yard too much. Overall if you aren’t too picky it’s a nice place to enjoy the river, and the owner was very prompt and polite communicating with.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry to see the review. There are neighbors upriver to the cabin, but everything at the cabin is oriented downriver and it is very private from the neighbors. There has been rain for 25 out of 30 days, so we couldn't get the yard service in to cut the grass which is usually done every week. We have always had excellent reviews on the cleanliness of the cabin, but I will certainly share the guests comments with our cleaning service. I expect all our guests to arrive at a spotless cabin and I will do my best to make sure that continues to happen. The cabin is on a well system and we have had issues with the chlorine staining our towels in the past. We have installed filters in the cabin which help, but sometimes it gets the best of us.
