About Richard Gruica
I am always looking for a great meal, great drink and great company and will do my best to make that happen. I used to work in the food industry as a Chef and Culinologist (I helped companies create the flavor portion to their products) and used to travel extensively for work. Since all things culinary have been a huge part of my life, I started an online based dining and socializing group called Good Eats and Meets that is now in 6 cities in the US and is the largest group of its kind in the US. I have a 15 year old daughter and a 24 year old son. My parents are Croatian and am also fluent in Spanish and Croatian. I spend my time split between the US and Europe as I recently started a new company called Captivating Croatia, where we take guests on an intimate food and wine based tours of Croatia.

We booked this last minute for a Ski trip for the holiday weekend. The owner was extremely helpful and responsive. Definitely try and find the place during daylight, it is remote. It's exactly what we wanted though. My daughter's loved the cabin and it was very clean and well stocked!
The Wi Fi and TV worked well too!! :)
Thank you so much so picking the cabin and that you had a great time. Seeing comments like yours, make me very happy. Come back soon!
Wonderful stay we enjoyed everything and had a great time. We would definitely stay again.
The cabin was lovely, quiet and so peaceful. The grounds around the cabin were beautiful. The cabin was very comfortable and well kept. Vacation is all about relaxation and we certainly found it at this location. A most enjoyable stay, and Richard the owner was very accommodating with any questions. Thanks for a great stay.
We had an awesome one night stay in the cabin. Perfect for a romantic getaway when you need to escape from phone calls and emails. Close enough to Boone and Blowing Rock to explore and moments from the Parkway. Will stay again!
A great private mountain cabin close to Boone and surroundings!
The location of The Mountain Retreat is ideal for a quiet, private vacation among the mountains. The cabin is situated in a small community of cabins near Deep Gap, NC. Although there are other cabins nearby, they are far enough away to ensure relative privacy.
The cabin lot itself is on a steep slope. The yard is beautifully landscaped, but is too steep for children to play in, and on-site activities will be limited to the cabin itself, the large front deck, and the gazebo.
The cabin is the perfect size for 2 people. However, in order to sleep 4, one couple would have to sleep on the pullout sofa, and it would make for a much cozier stay, especially with one bathroom! The bed in the bedroom is amazingly comfortable, and we got a great sleep every night on that soft mattress and pillows! However, the walk-in tub in the bathroom takes some getting used to, as it can be a bit cramped.
The cabin is well-furnished, and there are flat-screen TVs in the living room and bedroom, along with Blu-Ray players that can also stream Netflix. The wireless was reliable most of the time. However, there is no cable or satellite TV available.
The road leading to the cabin hugs the slopes on its approach. There will be about a mile of gravel road to traverse, and this section can get muddy during a heavy rain, but we never got stuck even in our 2-wheel drive vehicle. The cabin community has a nice paved asphalt road as you get close to the cabin, so the last couple of hills are much easier to drive up.
The cabin location is ideal for trips to Boone, Wilkesboro, and Blowing Rock. As a base of operations for exploring these areas, the cabin is a perfect way to have a private retreat while still being close to so many attractions.
The biggest negative for the cabin would definitely be the insects. My wife and I love to camp, so we were not particularly fazed by the bugs, but others may feel differently. As one would expect in such a lush environment, there was a great variety of insect life, and we saw just about all of it in the cabin at one time or another. A bug-catching jar will be your best friend.
The property is also in need of a little TLC. The cabin interior was clean enough, but is in serious need of a good dusting: a lot of dust has accumulated on the picture frames, rafters, behind the TVs, etc. Many of the outdoor features could use some attention too. Some of the outdoor lighting no longer works, and we could never get the gazebo light working.
Great little getaway!
Wife and I decided to get away to the mountains Easter weekend and booked Richard's cabin in the mountains of Fleetwood, NC - we absolutely loved it!
About 2.5 hours from Charlotte, its an easy drive to get to. Cabin is in an awesome location! Perfect size for the two of us, its a one bedroom with a sofa bed, a small kitchen with all the essentials (and then some!), a single bathroom (we got a kick out of the tub!) a wood burning fireplace, a gas grill and a nice deck overlooking the small valley with a retractable awning.
Being Easter weekend, there weren't many people around and that suited us just fine - its situated in a community with a limited number of cabins so I can't see it getting crowded in the Summer or Fall, either. Beautiful views and relaxing, it was just what the doctor ordered!
Some things to keep in mind - cell service is non-existent but there is wifi available (if you have wifi calling on your phone, that helps!). There are two TV's but only smart TV boxes with Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, etc - was perfect for us as we weren't saddled with TV shows. The nearest grocery store is about 25 minutes away so keep that in mind - you can't make a quick run to pick up milk, lol! And finally, Richard does spend time out of the country on business - he was in Scotland while we were there but returned our emails very promptly!
Looking at returning this fall!
Thanks so much for your detailed review. I am so glad to hear that you two had a great time. Look forward to having you back anytime. Irie!
The description clearly defines the place: quiet, secluded, and clean. The owner is very very responsive and the cleaning lady does an outstanding job. Great stay will do it again.
Thank you so very much Shelly...I pride myself on being as responsive as possible, especially as I am in Europe as much as I am. I will also make sure to tell Chelsie know you liked her services. All the best.
