Small town charm and rich history

The folksy ambience and rich history of Oxford has led it to being dubbed the Cultural Mecca of the South. It's got other nicknames, like the affectionate Ole Miss, or Little Easy for its similarity to nearby New Orleans. It's home to the University of Mississippi, the Ole Miss Rebels athletics teams, one of the most striking monuments to the Civil Rights Struggle, and some of the best blues music in the state. The city is small, and the Oxford vacation rentals are all close to the exceptional restaurants and nightlife, most of which are congregated around the central square.

Things to do

A Civil Rights marker in Oxford

Mississippi played an important part in the Civil Rights struggle and the fight for equality, and to honor James Meredith, the first African American student to enter the University of Mississippi in 1962, a monument was unveiled on the campus in 2006. While you're there, you can visit the University Museum on the main campus which houses Roman antiquities, 19th-century scientific equipment and artwork. While staying in an Oxford vacation rental, you can see part of the Mississippi Blues Trails, a series of blue markers which chronicle the history and influence of blues music in the state.

Activities

Enjoy the music scene around the square

Whether you're fishing Sardis Lake outside the city, walking through the green parks, swinging your clubs at the Ole Miss Golf Course or practicing your serve at the tennis courts, there are plenty of ways to experience the outdoors in Oxford. Hop on your bike, as the city is known for having one of the most 2-wheel friendly communities in the state. If you nab one of the Oxford vacation rentals round the main square, you can also enjoy live music in one of the bars almost every night of the week, just moments from the comfort of your bed.

Weather

The limitless blue skies of spring

There's no better time to stay in an Oxford vacation rental than winter and spring. When the hurricane-prone summer season has subsided and the sticky humid temperatures have fallen away, the weather is left pleasantly warm and dry. You'll need to wrap up during the depths of winter, but the bars and restaurants are warm and cozy. The peak season runs between May and July, during which you can hike along the nearby trails, go cycling, cast your line into the lake, and enjoy a plethora of outdoor events.

Natural features

Looking out for birds at Sardis Lake

Sardis Lake, close to many Oxford vacation rentals, is fed by the Little Tallahatchie River. It was created by a man-made dam which was originally designed to curb flooding in the area, but now serves as a wildlife haven. Millions of travelers visit the lake every year to fish for bass or to see the migrating bird and waterfowl which are attracted by the nesting structures. Mature bald eagles circling above in search of prey are common. It's not just about the birds and fish here though _ white-tailed deer are particularly prevalent, as are racoons and grey squirrels.
