When summer in the city gets too much, many New Yorkers flee to the cooling breeze of Long Island. Overlooking Smithtown Bay, Stony Brook is a small university town on the North Shore of Long Island. Away from the beaches, Long Island has plenty of lush, natural attractions. Avalon Park and Preserve is a beautiful woodland park strewn with wildflowers, secret waterholes, and peaceful nature walks. It has several easy hiking trails on offer, where you can spot the resident wading birds, ducks, and frogs. For more rugged trails, you need to head a few miles east to Laurel Ridge-Setauket Woods Nature Preserve, a 250-acre woodland scored with numerous hiking and biking trails.

The nearest airport is in John F. Kennedy Intl. Airport (JFK), located 38.8 mi (62.4 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that works for your travel itinerary, you can also fly into LaGuardia Airport (LGA), which is 39.6 mi (63.8 km) away.
