Naupaka Guest House:
Located on a lush one acre lot at the end of 23rd Avenue in Hawaiian Paradise Park and bordering the Maku'u Forest Reserve, with its own private driveway and gate, The Naupaka Guest House has much to offer travelers to East Hawai’i!
The 'Guest House' consists of four quaint cottages, all connected at their roofs and via covered decking. Two of the cottages house the bedrooms. All bedrooms have separate and individually keyed entries, so those traveling together can enjoy personal privacy and undisturbed rest when needed! This is our most unique and most valued feature!
This is an exclusive-use rental - meaning we rent to ONLY one group at a time (we are not a 'BnB' or Hostel). We take reservations for groups from only 1 up to 10, we can also accommodup to 12 depending on your group's configuration and sleeping arrangement needs.
The private-entry bedrooms comfortably sleep up to 8 in regular beds in 4 regular bedrooms (meaning rooms with closets), and up to 10 with use of an almost-full-sized futon in the 5th private room (the futon works well for one adult or 2 children). Groups of up to 12 are made possible with use of living room sleeper sofa and/or 2 twin air mattresses that can be placed in either the Na Lei Room or The Aloha Shirt Room (sitting chairs are moved into open closets to fit air mattresses), or Slippah's Room.
4 night minimum for groups of 1 to 8,
3 night minimum for groups of 9-12 persons.
(Due to demand, Winter holidays and Merrie Monarch Week have unique minimum # of rental days and group size minimums. Please inquire if interested.)
ALL rates, including rent, cleaning and security deposit are based on the number of renters in your group:
Rent begins at $70 per night for one person, exclusive use. $15 per night per additional person (see list below). No charges only for ONE child under age 1 (Pack n Play crib and high chair for use on site).
Cleaning fees are:
$75 for groups of 1 to 4,
$125 for groups of 5-6,
$150 for 7-8,

and $200 for 11-12.
NOTE: Instant Quote option will not reflect cleaning fees accurately for groups over 4, or for security deposits for certain group sizes, so an adjusted quote will be sent with our reply to inquiries, as need be.

Additional info about “The Naupaka Guest House” ~
The cottage-complex was originally built as a hostel, so all bedrooms were built to be separate from the living/dining area, all with their own separate entrances and keys.
Although it is not currently run as a hostel, having all of the bedrooms in cottages separate from the living area cottage allows those who want to socialize in the cottage with the living area and screened lanai to be able to, without disturbing those who want to relax or sleep in their cottage/room without being disturbed by those socializing at night or making breakfast in the morning~
Groups truly appreciate that their individual sleep schedules/needs can be met well under these circumstances! It is our most unique feature, and highly valued by our guests!
During its conversion into a vacation rental in 2011, along with Hawaiian décor touches, renovations made by us include: new flooring, new stove/oven/frig, new ceiling fans throughout, plus upgraded plumbing & electrical (all to building code and permitted), plus the addition of child safety lattice, and an also permitted on-demand hot water system, (hot water never runs out!).
Additionally, our water filtration system is commercial grade with UV, including 2 pre-filters, the second catching anything as small as 0.5 microns– meaning we have water that's safe-to-drink and wash in! We also have 2 water catchment tanks, so we never run out of water!
The four cottages are all connected by decking & railings, forming a small courtyard in the center that serves as a meditation garden and peaceful sight when you exit your room each morning before gathering for breakfast! The outter sides of the cottages are flanked by lush tropical landscaping ~ including some fruit trees (yours for the picking when in season; orange, lime, grapefruit, avocados and breadfruit).
Another feature guests particularly enjoy: the property attracts many birds, which you will hear singing throughout the daytime; and hosts a night-time coqui-frog chorus to lull you to sleep! Coquis are very small nocturnal frogs that live in surrounding foliage, and are found throughout the Big Island. You may never see one (except via flashlight), but the males have a very sweet mating call at night~
Here is how the bedrooms/cottages are arranged (refer to photos):
Two bedrooms (with private entrances off the courtyard and uniquely-keyed doors) are located in their own cottage, along with one of the bathrooms. These rooms share an inside connecting door, which can be left locked or unlocked, depending on your needs. These are Da Slippahs Room, the largest bedroom, and the smallest bedroom (The Hula Room). Unlocking the connecting inside door converts these two rooms and bathroom into a lovely petite suite for a couple with young children, or just provides easier shared access to the bathroom in Da Slippah's Room for anyone using The Hula Room~
The remaining 3 bedrooms are located across the little courtyard in their own cottage (again, all with private and uniquely-keyed entrances). They include: The Aloha Shirt Room, The Na Lei Room and The Flowers Room. None of these rooms connect to any other rooms.
There is a full shower-bathroom combo in a third adjoining building. That second bathroom is only steps away from the 3 bedroom cottage, along decking illuminated safely with calm nighttime lighting and in a locale private enough to not wake others! The cottages' fully-stocked private laundry room is in the same building with the second bathroom, and features brand new state-of-the art machines (as of July, 2013).
Each of the bedrooms include a reading lamp, sitting area, radio and power surge protection outlet strip, to power up all your important personal electronics!
All guestroom key-rings include a key to the room, the guest house gate and one for the fourth attached building, which houses the kitchen, dining and relaxation areas ~ including a comfy family room, with its loveseat and queen-sized sleeper sofa plus a VERY popular full-body programmable massage chair, all right next to the adjoining screened lanai with wicker loveseat/coffee table and large patio table.
There are 2 eating areas; a dining room that seats 6, plus the very nearby screened lanai with its amply-sized patio table, providing additional seating for 4. The living room and lanai coffee tables can easily accommodate two more for groups of 11-12 that may want to have a meal at the same time. Additionally, for out-door food prep; there is a table in the nearby covered shed that can be pulled out for you for use next to the guest house's kettle BBQ~
For Web users: Wi-Fi is free and accessible throughout the property ~ no password required.
First aid kit, bug spray and flashlights, plus fire extinguisher are located in the kitchen.
This is a SMOKE-FREE home. Smoking is only permitted if 20+ feet from buildings. NO exceptions...smoking nearby the buildings will result in loss of security deposit.
The EMS system in our area is via 9-1-1, with the closest EMS providers being only about 4 miles away. There is also an urgent care facility within 15 minutes, in the town of Kea'au, open daily.
We live nearby on the same property in a small home, very privately located (not visible to renters) & one or the other or both of us remain available via land-line or cell phone for any type of help if need arises. We also have many friends in the subdivision. We have even had 2 neighbors’ families stay with us for weddings~
After check-in, you’ll probably only see us when one of us walks along the drive to get the morning paper, or you might see us drive along our own driveway. We always encourage our renters to call us, though, for any reason!

Sweet East Hawai'i locale! ~The ocean is only 5 mins drive away with beautiful vistas for peaceful walks and also tide-pools to swim in for the more adventurous; gorgeous public Beach Parks with snorkeling and turtles (and lifeguards) are just outside Hilo! (About 25 mins drive, with snorkel rentals available in Hilo); Volcanoes National Park 40 minutes drive; Food Markets and restaurants 10 minutes; Large 'Maku'u Farmers' Market' on Sundays with live entertainment and great food (eat there under canopies or take to go) is only 5 minutes away~
Year Purchased: 2010
About the owner: Michael has lived in the Hilo area since 1998. He grew up in the Santa Monica area of Los Angeles and attended Cal State SLO, where he received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, then worked in high tech sales before making his move to island. He retrained into real estate sales and very much enjoys his current career as a Realtor, being very-well suited to the profession. He also owns a popular music store in Hilo (CDs, LPs, home and car audio), and plays guitar with his many musician friends in his spare time. Gina began life in the Philadelphia area before moving with her family to the Los Angeles area at age 15. She attended UCLA for her undergrad degree and went to The University of Memphis for post-grad studies. She has previously worked as an elementary school teacher and assistant to developmentally disabled adults. After Tennessee, her life brought her to Oklahoma, Texas, Northern California, and finally Hawaii. She now works as primary manager of the guest house, takes care of our home and our two indoor kitty cats, and has recently passed her real estate licensing exams to begin to assist Michael with his listings, etc. In her spare time, she particularly enjoys swimming and writing.
Why the Owner Chose Keaau:
Location~! Naupaka Guest House abuts the Maku'u Forest Reserve, making for a quiet, private locale. It is still close enough to Hilo to not be 'out in the boonies,' and makes a nice home base for those who want to stay in one spot while making day trips on island~
The Unique Benefits at this House:
This property's most unique feature is that it has all bedrooms in cottages separate from the main cottage with the living areas which allows for maximum flexibility in sleep/socializing schedules for larger groups/families. It also gives more privacy and personal security to groups of individuals or couples traveling together than a typical house. It also allows us to keep our rates low for our smaller groups, as we open only those bedrooms needed for each group~
