Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2004
My wife and I were enchanted from the moment we stumbled over this piece of extraordinary property on the Animas River, we answered an ad in the Durango Herald for vacant land. The first year we walked the many plateaus and eventually settled on a hillside to site our home that we would build in two years. We planned a walk out for the upper and lower stories, when we finished , it felt better than we could imagine,it fit the feel of the land and the water, lots of water, we both have operated Flexible Flyers Rafting,in Durango, for 26years, finally we would live on the Rio we loved!!
Why the Owner Chose Durango
We have lived in Southwest Colorado for many years and will call Durango home for many more. Building our own house by the river was a dream come true, and one day it will be our primary home. Until that day, we really enjoy sharing this sweet place with others who come to enjoy the beauty and serenity here.
The Unique Benefits of this Home
Duh, it is on the River of Lost Souls, Elco Creek runs year around and the train bed from the old Durango Steam train is across the River, it is all good...

In October of 2003, I first laid eyes upon this incredible property, 20 acres along the Animas River south of Durango near the town of Bondad. It was originally the site of an old western town of Elco, which sprang up along the Narrow Gauge Railroad that ran along the river, there was a bridge and the first road, it was also the site of the Pony Express Station, which operated a stable between Durango and Aztec. A series of mesa steps, drop down into the river bottom, an area of wetlands, undisturbed and home to about every form of bird life and wildlife that lives in this area. In September of 2004, I started construction of mine and Robins dream house, we wanted it to fit into the hillside and so we dug it into the hill, half of the lower rooms are underground, the lower story walks out into it's own little mesa. Upstairs, the living room, dining room and kitchen are one big 'great' room, we built a wraparound deck, it looks towards the winding Animas River below. The house is new, we have stayed overnite a few times, when we wake up and go ouside we are amazed at the abundant sounds of the song birds in the morning, the V's of geese going off to work, bald eagles, blue herons etc. etc. It is like stepping into your own private wildlife area, come visit, stay awhile.
