Many of our guests have spent most of their vacation without leaving the property,it is a great place to watch the Rio and relax. We have twenty acres along the Animas River, also Elco Creek that feeds it's own private nature preserve and abundant bird and wildlife area. At 1550 square feet, a nicely appointed two bedroom, two bath home with a greenhouse and plant room that is a great place to read a book and socialize, also an acre of yard to play on, horseshoes and Bocce provided. There is a deck, which wraps around the east and north side and looks down at the River and property, to the north you can see the San Juan Mountains.
There are miles of places to walk along the River or creek.Recently,the fishing has become a great feature of this part of the Animas River as a large meander has created deep holes and excellent habitat for the trout.Elco Creek and the wetland area also serve to attract fish by adding food to this part of the Rio. The residents are beaver and muskrats, deer and elk. It is a flyway for resident and migratory birds, if you have a bird-list, you likely will be able to add some names.

Why the Owner Chose Private Homes
We have lived in Southwest Colorado for most of our lives. Building our own house by the river was a dream come true, and one day it will be our primary home. Until that day, we really enjoy sharing this sweet place with others who come to enjoy the beauty and serenity here.
The Unique Benefits at this House
On the River of Lost Souls, Elco Creek runs year around and the train bed from the old Durango Steam train is across the River. Our property is sitting on the oldest town in the area, the town of Elco Colorado, we are also 6 miles from the New Mexico border. The home is set into the hillside and has walk out upper and lower stories, the lower bench is the Rio and the largest wetland on the entire Animas River Drainage.

My wife and I were enchanted from the moment we stumbled over this piece of extraordinary property on the Animas River, also Elco Creek runs through this busy ecosystem! The first year we walked and camped it, eventually settled on a hillside to site our home , it took us two years to build it. We planned a walk out for the upper and lower stories, when we finished , it felt better than we could imagine,it fit the feel of the land and the water.
We have operated Flexible Flyers Rafting,in Durango for 28 years, finally we would live on the Rio we loved!! Now, we have two homes, our other is on the Florida River.
