Bass Harbor house description

Slate House, is a unique and intriguing post-and-beam artist's home, located in a private wooded setting just around the corner from the picturesque village of Bernard, where the town dock and local favorite restaurant Thurston's Lobster Pound is located. The colorful and comfortable interior has a large, open living area upstairs, along with a fabulous kitchen equipped for the gourmet cook, a cozy master bedroom with beautiful tiled shower, and a deck outside the bedroom door. The downstairs bedroom has a separate entrance and bathroom. The artist owner, who lives and works in her studio on the property, maintains an extensive landscaped garden as well as a small orchard and vegetable gardens - guests are welcome to roam! The upstairs living room and bedroom look out onto a small, peaceful perennial garden and the woods beyond.

This is a perfect home for relaxing in a quiet, out-of-the way spot, yet close to the village of Southwest Harbor (4 miles) with all of its amenities.

Pets are generally welcome, please ask! Dogs do need to be kept on a leash however as there are many gardens on this property. Longer term rentals are possible, feel free to call to discuss options. A deposit of $400 is requested to secure a rental, refundable up to 45 days in advance of the rental; after that I am happy to refund your deposit if I am able to re-rent the property. The pictures don't do this house justice! It is open, spacious, comfortable and well equipped for an extended stay. Cherie is absolutely fabulous- helpful and welcoming. I would absolutely recommend this house for couples, families, or friends going on vacation. The location is near Bernard (and Thurston's Lobster Pound) and Southwest Harbor.

We stayed at the Slate House during our Thanksgiving vacation. The location could not have been better - quite and peaceful, just a short drive to fantastic hiking sites both on the coast and more mountainous terrain, and only a few minutes away from Nemo's! Cherie, the owner, was very helpful and a wonderful host. The Slate House is charming and very well equipped - it had all we needed to cook our Thanksgiving feast. We hope to be back!

We had a wonderful time at Slate House. The location of the house - on the quiet side of Mt. Desert Island - was perfect. Set back in the woods, surrounded by beautiful gardens, we enjoyed the seclusion and calm of the area. The house, itself, is a unique work of art. Beautiful colors, paintings, and ceramics abound. The huge, well-appointed kitchen was terrific and enabled us to enjoy cooking at home as much as we did eating at a few of the island's wonderful restaurants. With Slate House as our base, we were able to enjoy everything the island had to offer - hiking and biking in Acadia, shopping in Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor, and, of course, Thurston's in Bernard - the local lobster pound. Cherie, the owner of Slate House, was helpful and responsive. She suggested some terrific activities and restaurants and maintains the property, beautifully. In short, we had a wonderful vacation at Slate House and would recommend it highly.

My husband and I, along with our black Lab, recently enjoyed two weeks on Mount Desert Island at the Slate House. The house is cozy and welcoming - yet ample sized. The kitchen is large and will meet all your needs - its island a great gathering spot. The grounds and gardens are lovely and were enjoyed by humans and dog alike. The bathrooms are recently remodeled and it shows. Although on the 'quietside' of the island the home is close to Thurston's (awful good lobster!) and Southwest Harbor (a good sized market and great restaurants). Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are just a short drive away - it is pleasant to return to the quietside after a busy day in Bar Harbor! We are already planning when we can return to the Slate House!!

                          Owner info

                          Year Purchased: 1986

About the owner: As you can see in the photo collage above, I love the outdoors and spend much of my time (when I'm not working in my studio) hiking and kayaking in Acadia, relaxing with friends and perusing my rather sizable garden, in which I grow most of my own food and maintain a varied perennial, tree and shrub landscape. In college I studied arts and languages (B.A. in french and fine arts, Tufts); I grew up in the Northeast and have lived in Maine since 1974

Why the Owner Chose Bass Harbor:
When I moved to Mt. Desert Island from Washington County, Me in 1983, I was already very involved in the artistic community and wanted to find a piece of land here on which I could build my home. With several other artist friends, I bought property which we then divided into separate lots, mine being about 4.5 acres on which I personally built my own cabin, then my studio and house followed in 1999 and 2004 respectively. My involvement in the Island's artistic life extends to business co-ownership of Island Artisans Gallery (from 1983 - 30 years now!) in Bar Harbor, as well as working in my own studio. I had for years also been an avid organic gardener and have been thrilled to have the land to work....

The Unique Benefits at this House:
One of the great and fun aspects of my home is everything that happened long before I actually built it: for years I have collected re-cycled building materials, odd bits and pieces that I thought might go into a house someday. The flooring upstairs came out of an abandoned woolen mill in Lewiston, Me.; the slate siding on the house was salvaged from a roof in Portland, Me. - so much of what I see every day in the house has a story and a memory for me.
