About the property

According to a recent guest, "It's like being in Tahoe, but without the drive."

The master suite has 30’ vaulted ceilings, walk-in closet, double opening skylights, large picture window, a side sitting area, warm beige-toned carpeting, and a California King bed. The master bath has custom vanity with top bowl sink, fully enclosed glass shower, double opening skylights, a towel warmer, and travertine tile throughout.

The great room is an open floor plan with an arched wood burning fireplace as the focal point, along with oak hardwood floors that were reclaimed from an old church. The entire back wall is a series of continuous sliding glass doors and windows leading to the deck that lines the back and side of the house overlooking beautiful Mt. Tamalpais and Muir Woods Valley. A full wall of maple bookshelf cabinetry on one end creates the library. On the other end of the great room is the open dining room. A gas grill is available on the side deck.

The Family room includes a large comfortable leather sofa plus a leather zero gravity chair, 52" high definition tv, high definition over the air antenna for all the major broadcast networks+ along with Netflix, Amazon Prime video, Hulu, and Sony am/fm stereo receiver.

The gourmet kitchen includes double electric ovens, five burner gas stove top, custom built maple cabinetry including some glass insert doors and interior lighting, high-end fill and spot intensity lighting highlights, full slab Brazilian granite countertops on all kitchen surfaces including an island bar with four stools, a step in pantry with wrap around shelving, side by side refrigerator freezer with filtered ice and water in the door, and an extra large and deep double sink.

The second floor features two large bedrooms, with internal windows that overlook the great room, and are connected by a loft hallway that also overlooks the great room. One bedroom has a California King bed with dual control mattress pad warmers while the other has a very comfy pillow top queen bed, The grand full bathroom has a double custom maple vanity, double sinks with brushed nickel hardware, mirrors and faces an extra large soaking tub surrounded in gleaming glass.

The third level contains the Crow’s Nest, which is a small, charming two level room with its own loft. There is a single bed on the lower level while the cozy loft has a super comfy foam topped single mattress set on the loft floor in the Japanese style.

The basement has front loading washer and dryer with folding table area, hanger area, wrap around shelving, a built in wine cellar for safely storing 25 bottles of wine at an even temperature.

Home is approximately 2300 square feet with newer Anderson double pane windows and sliding doors throughout. Plenty of street parking available. For guests traveling with a baby a traveling baby crib is available upon request, but please bear in mind that the house is not child proof. No smoking and no pets.

When we say no parties or events we mean that we don't want people renting the house solely for the purpose of throwing a big party or event. Inviting your friends over for a dinner party is perfectly fine.

About Gregory A. Ketchum, Ph.D.

Deb and I were high school sweethearts, but lost contact with each other for 34 years. In that gap of time we both had gone on and had marriages, children, and lived those many years apart not knowing if the other was even still alive. We never forgot each other and the special love we felt for each other. Then 9 years ago Deb found me through (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) and we have been happy together ever since. There's much more to the story including both of us surviving cancer. If you're interested we'll tell you more of the story when we talk to you.

Deb and I live in an apartment in the former garage, which is a separate structure on the premises, so are available to respond to your requests or any issues that may arise. We strive to meet all guests upon arrival to welcome you and give an orientation to the house and surrounding area.

Why Gregory A. Ketchum, Ph.D. chose Muir Beach

Muir Beach is a very small community that is set in both The Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Mt. Tamalpais State Park. We have a community center that is just down the hill from our home that has an outstanding outdoor play area for kids with a view of the ocean and beach. The Pelican Inn, an English style pub and restaurant is just down the hill. Muir Woods National Monument where the redwoods grow is just 3 miles down the road.

What makes this house unique

Whale Watching from Muir Beach Overlook

Visit Muir Beach from January through April to see gray whales migrating past The Overlook across the street from our house or down at Muir Beach as they make their way from the Arctic to Baja. Humpback whales also might be seen moving in pods of seven or 10 from November through March. The rest of the year – summer and fall – visitors can visit the Farallon Islands, where humpbacks, blue whales, sperm whales and orcas feed.

Each year, about 20,000 gray whales make an epic 6,000-mile/9,656-km journey between Alaska and Mexico—and then back again. These whales travel from feeding grounds in the Bering Sea to mating and breeding lagoons along Baja California in Mexico. It’s one of the most amazing wildlife migrations on the planet, and also relatively easy for humans to witness. In some locations, you can see whales spouting, breaching, and fluking from ocean bluffs, especially if you have binoculars. While gray whales get the spotlight along the California coast, other cetaceans—including orcas, humpbacks, porpoises, dolphins, and gigantic blue whales—ply the waters at different times of year, bumping up your chances of seeing something amazing out there in the sea.

Perfect Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We all had a great time at Greg and Deb's place! Coming from San Francisco, it is the perfect weekend getaway spot to escape the city and not have a long drive home on Sunday. The weather was perfect, it fit 8 people in beds with ease, and the kitchen had everything we needed for cooking. Plus, the Muir Beach Overlook is literally a stone's throw away from the front gate, so those views were definitely a big hit by our whole party. A friend is already planning another weekend here!

Great view and the best location in the Muir Beach area.

  • 4 of 5

If you want a comfortable, homey house with a view that is only 100 yards from the Muir Beach overlook with its fabulous vistas and hiking trails, this is it. We came for our 50th grad school reunion and the common space around the fireplace and the big dining room table were welcome meeting spaces. The big kitchen allowed us all to cook together. The house is full of personal items, mementos, photos and collectibles so it's a little cluttered for a rental. The bonus is that there is virtually everything that you might need : corkscrew, wine pump, cheese grater, coffee maker, every kind of utensil and dish, flatware, pots and pans, bowls, packaging materials, and a store of basic supplies. The owners are very helpful and friendly. The feeling is definitely like being in the home of a friend or relative. Here's what you will have to sacrifice though: cell phone reception if you have Verizon, wi-fi (it's spotty and slow), standard TV news stations (such as CNN and ESPN) and many popular channels, and your knees if you don't like climbing stairs. We had a little contretemps with the septic system after a big rain but we're assured that won't happen again. All in all a good experience, but don't come with the idea of getting a lot of work done with your phone or laptop. That proved to be a bonus for us.

we had a great time

  • 5 of 5

The house is both beautiful and comfortable. Plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms and a gorgeous and very well appointed kitchen. We cooked up a storm. The owners were very nice to us, very flexible and informative. We loved the very quick access we had to the Muir Overlook...absolutely gorgeous views.
