The Puhala Hale is perfect vacation spot to relax by the sea away from traffic congestion, airport noise pollution and the hustle and bustle of “in-town” resorts and crowded tourist areas. At the end of nearly every day, you can enjoy an exceptionally beautiful sunset. The Puhala offers spectacular ocean views from nearly every room and the large tiled and covered lanais are perfect for relaxing while enjoying the coastal sea breezes. The cooling breezes and the sun-warmed, dry climate is year long in South Kona, and the homes location is at an ideal elevation for temperature, never too hot, or chilly.

The Puhala Hale is located 33 miles south from Kailua-Kona, and 63 miles from the Volcano. The 45-minute coastal drive south of Kailua-Kona through coffee country is well worth it to enjoy this rural retreat that is still convenient and within a ten-minute drive to groceries and more. Milolii is a quiet coastal area, perfect to relax and enjoy the layback Hawaiian lifestyle, though close enough to take short trips to golf, shop and fine dine. Puhala Hale is convenient to Kona and the Hilo Airports, as well as a short drive to Volcano National Park, City of Refuge, Black Sand Beach and Hawaii’s South Point. The Milolii area is world renowned for its pristine ocean waters and awesome deep-sea fishing opportunities. The area allows you to explore tide pools, caves and lava tubes while hiking along historical sites and ancient walls.

The Puhala Hale comes equipped with snorkel gear since it’s just a short drive down to the water and beaches were snorkeling and scuba diving is world class. Humpback Whale season is Dec.-March. So whale watching (and hearing at night) can become your favorite pastime. Just minutes to the beach, there is a small park with a secret trail head to the coconut lined black sand beach of Honomalino, where you may by chance get to swim with the sea turtles and spinner dolphins while sun tanning and enjoying the pristine beach and waters.

Keywords: Coastal Home with panoramic ocean views, enjoy our black sand coconut lined beach and snorkel cove just minutes from home.

About Nancy

We built this home and love it, you will too!

Nancy purchased this house in 2007

Why Nancy chose Kona Coast

It's away from all of the touristy Big Island congestion and noise. Access to Honomalino Beach Cove, it's one of the last well kept 'beach and snorkeling' secrets on the Big Island

What makes this house unique

Once you are there you won't want to leave except to go to the beach or shop :) it has everything for a super fun filled vaca.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great Escape for our family of 6!

  • 5 of 5

If you like quiet and peaceful...this is for you! Great views of the ocean and very comfortable setting. The hammock and watching the birds at the bird feeder were my favorites! Our teens (4) loved the pool table...didn't use the pool as we were out doing the touristy thing most of the day. It was nice coming back to comfortable beds after long days of sightseeing. The owners have provided most everything you could ask for...washer, dryer, beach towels, even a wine refrigerator!! Mahalo Nancy for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. It was a pleasure talking with you as well as Carol. She was a gem!

Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This house is beautiful! We wanted a vacation place near South Point and not overrun with tourists but at the same time, we wanted to be close enough to visit both the Hilo and Kona sides of the island, the location was perfect.

Our flight arrived late and GPS did not work so I advise printing directions in advance and maybe using google to familiarize yourself with the area a little bit. My sister freaked about the driveway being so steep and navigating the rental car in the parking area was tricky. However, we had two men on this trip so we just tossed them the keys. The only other thing I would mention is that the pool table equipment wasn't in good condition. The cues were missing tips or broken. We managed to salvage a single stick and took turns which was great since we played pool almost every night.

Everything else was beautiful. The house is huge and lovely, the kitchen and bathrooms were well stocked with everything we needed. We stopped at the Walmart in Kona on the way in for staple items since we were staying for several days and then took advantage of the small grocery store in Ocean View (best prices FOR SURE in the area). We cooked most of our meals in the kitchen or on the grill, only eating out a few times during our stay.

The view was spectacular and I pretty much lived in the hammock outside my bedroom. I would absolutely rent this house again.

Owner's Response: Mahalo, Glad you enjoyed your stay! I visited just after your stay and I guess the housekeeper had gotten our maintenance man to fix them. I'm going to buy some new sticks, allot of guests have children and they are really rough on the billiard table, equipment and games in general. We do our best to keep all of it in order, I apologize Thanks for letting us know, enjoy your summer :) Nancy

Stunning Home

  • 4 of 5

This is a gorgeous home, very quiet and private, with a huge and well-appointed patio that maximizes the dramatic views. We enjoyed cooking in, relaxing and reading, and hiking to Honomalino beach for snorkeling and swimming. After hiking down from the house to the water and back up the very steep hills, we wisely decided to drive to the bottom and park before doing our daily exercise along the water! This was a good location to get to the volcano, however it was a bit isolated in terms of having access to nearby restaurants. Only negatives for us were the very small and cold pool, and the VOG that unfortunately was present most days of our stay, which prevented our being able to see any sunsets. Linda was very responsive and helpful and we really enjoyed our stay.

Gracious home with magnificent views

  • 5 of 5

Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this wonderful home. What a great place. The beds were incredibly comfortable and the views were incrdible. The house is beautifully decorated, the kitchen was terrific to work in, fully stocked with appliances like a blender and waffle iron. We appreciated finding a few items we had forgotten like spices and coffee filters. We even played pool in a wonderful game room when we werent sitting out under the stars. We loved hearing the birds in the morning and being away from the crowds in Kona.

There is a welcoming vibe, and the experience is totally casual yet gracious. The local spots like Honomolino, the markets in Ocean View, and easy day trips to Kona and South Point make it a good place to stay between excursions..It is in the dry part of the island, heavenly! We circumnavigated the island in a week's time with an overnight in Volcano. Always glad to get back to our place on the hill.

We will recommend this spot to others.

Would not recommend this property

  • 1 of 5

I am not sure what happened between 2008 and December 2010 when we stayed here but I would not recommend this place to anyone Aside from the fact we arrived and the place was a mess, we had to ask for our first night rental back after the owner promised to refund and to this date, have not received our security deposit back, again after the owner promised to send it to us. This place is an unorganized mess and is not what is promised on the site.

In regards to amenities: listings are not accurate

Property well maintained: no

Good Customer service:no

Recommend to anyone: no

Owner's Response: There was a mix up for the very first time for the check in! We have refunded the guests their 1-night stay as well as the cleaning fee! IWe produced everything promised to them. With the ill feelings I am sure they could not be happy no matter what. We have a great blog on our web site that shows how great the house is and how satisfied our guests have been. Things happen and nobody is perfect. We have a good track record. Mahalo
